Hmm... I might filch Ninety-Nine Nights off of you sometime after Christmas for collection purposes, if it isn't sold already. Seems like a good enough deal, even if I probably wouldn't be able to play it.

Looking at that Ys IV since I've yet to play that one...
I'm not too terribly familiar with the PCE. Reading up on playing a PCE game on windows makes it sound like it's not too terribly difficult, but I figure I should ask before doing anything: is it very doable? Are there any common issues with it?

It's very doable. As long as you have the right tools:
The game. A CD/DVD burner OR Alcohol 120% / Virtual Drive. The emulator. The System Card bios. The translation patch. The English script for the Japanese VA. (print it out or something, but try not to read ahead)
The only issue I've had with the game, is that I've had to minimize it to look at the damn script every time someone spoke!

actually playing it in japanese is even easier, if you put it in your PC cd drive it will load right up if i recall in Magic Engine (the best turbo/pc engine emulator) it is a awesome game and far superior to mask of the sun. heck it is worth the price i said just for the redbook audio soundtrack

It loads right up even translated, what are you talking about? I've never had any loading issues with the English version. // With that said, though, you still need the System Card bios with Magic Engine. Even in Japanese. Playing the actual game in Japanese may not be as simple. I'd actually managed to get pretty lost even in the English version.

i do not have it translated and never tried to load it up that way, i was just saying it is very simple the original disc can be stuck in the pc cd drive and played just like that you do not need anything but the emulator (magic engine) and rom (system card) so it is very very easy to play without knowledge of emulation. he asked how hard it was to play the game on windows.

My mistake. I must point out that saying "it's even easier" makes it sound like you have a strong basis (actual experience with the English translation) for comparison. I simply corrected that they're about the same in terms of difficulty, as far as loading is concerned. As far as the Japanese comment is concerned, I took a little unnecessary side-trip to point out that he may want to play it in English; although I've overcomplicated my explanation by needlessly carrying on about the difficulty of playing the actual game, as per my personal experience. My apologies.

hi no offence taken at all so no need for a apology, i found part 4 to be pretty easy the only part i got stuck on in japanese is going to the castle later on to get the ingredient to make the gunpowder like item, all you have to do is simply lower your weapons to the default to get by there but i took me a while to find out what to do. no doubt in english it would be much easier

It's very doable. As long as you have the right tools: The game. A CD/DVD burner OR Alcohol 120% / Virtual Drive. A PC ENGINE DUO-R The ARCADE SYSTEM bios. The translation patch BURNED ONTO A COPY OF THE GAME. The English script for the Japanese VA. (print it out or something, but try not to read ahead) Fixxed Magic Engine is ass. If you are going to spend money to play Turbo stuff, buy a console

I agree with Justin, except I must correct him -- *all* emulation sucks. Unless you're doing console emulation ON a console, then it might just be acceptable. Emulation on a PC? Not so great. It's depriving you of the feeling you get when you actually pop in the game into the original console and play it the way it was meant to be played in the first place. ...aside from that, Magic Engine is really the way to go if you can't afford a PCE/TD!

Or a mod a Xbox classic and load the Mednafen X PC-Engine Emulator on that puppy and you'll be ready to go. It even plays originals straight from the DVD drive. If you can't afford a real PC-Engine/Turbo Duo, this is surely the next best thing. : )

Thanks everyone else for your help, too. But putting my Xbox to use actually sounds like the superior option, haha.

XD Played some 1943 I did and died horribly! :D We also used it to watch the Detroit Metal City anime and some Daily Show and Stephen Colbert lulz when I went to visit him! :D :D The Xbox is full of fun!

But putting my Xbox to use actually sounds like the superior option, haha. Well, there are many ways to go about modding a classic xbox to run your own homebrew and indie programs/emus and the processes for how to go about modding it depend on which version you have and some don't even require ever opening up the box, although I'd recommend it if only for changing out the harddrive to something bigger. It's basically a mini-pc and can run standard dvd-rom drives and IDE harddrives. Mine has a 100 gig HDD in there and I'm running the Avalaunch firmware. I never really use it for playing Xbox games much, only for its Xbox Media Center, which will stream videos from a home network and emu to tv capabilities, which are VERY plentiful. It basically has most emulators ports from the Atari to the Playstation Era, including NES, SNES, Genesis, TG-16/PC-Engine, MSX (w/virtual keyboard support!), Mame, Neo-Geo and X68000. The only thing that hasn't been made for it yet that I wish they would is a decent PC-88/98 emu. But yeah, the program I use is called Mednafen X and it runs PC-Engine games quite well, and straight from the disc even, allows for save states and screen shots on the fly as well. xbox-scene.com is the place you would want to check out if you all are ever interested in making a classic Xbox into a one hell of a gaming/emulation machine. : ) -Thomas
