In my attempts to finish my first Ys game I ran into Vagullion....after 20-30 attempts I still can't beat him. If I can hit him TWICE before I'm dead that's unusual. I'm playing on Normal mode. It seems like, and I've heard from others, that there is a BIG jump in difficulty w/in the game when it comes to mobs and bosses. Obviously bosses should be hard...but the difference seems almost out of proportion taking into consideration how you can semi-sleep-kill through the non-boss parts. I'll try another 10 times but if I can't do it I'm faced with either re-starting from the beginning on 'Easy' - or give up on my Ys attempts.

Vagullion is probably one of the more asinine bosses in Ys. Just takes practice and patience, dood. Once you get the timing down it's not *too* bad. Wish I could say more, but that's really all there be. :/

Thanks... I even handed the computer to my gaming friend (who is much more of a gamer than I ever was...and he tried 4-5 times and declared that it was 'stupid' and handed it back. I just leveled from 8 to 10 and will go back in to him and try again... siiiiiighhhhh

how's yer equipment? On Nightmare I usually take on Vagullion at 9, but with the Silver equipment.. and I'm a little experienced at the fight.
What seems hard now will change as you get more experienced.. wait until Dark Fact on Nightmare! bwahahahaha

Rings don't work during boss fights.
Also, yeah, know that trying to take on Vagullion UNDER lv10 is MOST definitely NOT recommended, no matter which difficulty.
Vagullion seems to hit you "randomly", but trust me, even that guy got his patterns. Your friend jumped on the gun too quickly on his/her judgement. xD
Anyway, another Vagullion victim. XD He's always pissing off people, in billions of Ys I versions. xD

It's a bit of a battle of patience. Just keep running the bats around the edge of the room. On Normal you should be able to run away from them easily. When you see them start to bunch up he's either gonna a) reform so hit him! or b) the bats'll circle around and then spread out again so run away!
Pay attention to the timing when you see his bats bunch up as it's predictable and you'll be able to position yourself better in anticipation.
Other than that, yeah, levels in Ys I make a HUGE difference as stated.

Huh.... I had no idea rings didn't work! O: In Ys I-II COMPLETE, at least. ... But just to be on the safer side, I say at least on Nightmare. Though I'm pretty sure they don't work in any Ys I game whatsoever in any difficulty, aside Ys I NES (with the exception of the Healing Ring). Well,... technically... there is one ring that works. xD Try the Evil one. XD

Vagullion.....is...DEAD!!! After leveling to 10 the fight was significantly easier. Took two attempts but the next one I got him while still having about 40% health left! Woot!!! And....a question: in SORT of preparing for Ys II Complete... Do I get to 'import' the character w/ gear, etc from I into II? I know, still got heaps of Ys I left but was just curious. Great game(s), great community. Thanks for being n00b-friendly.

Congrats!
And while Ys I and II are direct sequels to eachother, none of your equipment will transfer over between the two games. All you keep is the books of Ys.

I know it doesn't matter anymore, but... YOU GUYS FORGOT SOMETHING VITAL ABOUT VAGULLION!!! If you keep moving while the bats are bunching up, there's a HUGE chance that they'll spread out and keep flying. So what you do is, you figure out WHERE those bats are going, and wait for them to form together in a safe spot; STAND STILL while he's forming! IMMEDIATELY charge toward him, the instant that he lands on the ground! Ah, but such does the dainty swallow play, that many form and dwellow say; and on the morn of Stackadu, thy form goes black with black and blue!

You know, the bosses that gave me the most trouble in Ys ETERNAL/Complete were Jenocres (yes, the first boss) and Yogleks and Omulgun. Oh wait -- Khon ... whatever that giant floating rock. Or was that in Ys II? ^^;
And who can forget the final boss? XD!
Vagullion was never an issue in any versions of games that I fought him/it in. At least, not that I can remember . ^^ I just ran around the room clockwise, staying close to the walls, and when he stopped, I just ran up to him and moved Adol left and right to swipe it a few times before it broke up again.

I just beat Khonsclard. Not that much strategy there (at least on 'Normal Mode'). Basically constantly hitting and hoping he goes down before you do - which he did on the third attempt.
Upwards and Onwards.

Great topic, Vagullion ALWAYS gives me trouble and I end up having to retry the fight for the better part of an hour. I don't think any other boss in Ys I & II gives me so much trouble so consistently.

Best strat I found for Khonsclard is to run in circles just inside of him, in the same direction of rotation as his shots. 9 times outta 10 you'll kill him before he kills you, even on Nightmare (though that's 7 times outta 10)! Vagullion gave me more problems in the TCD version than in Complete. Though maybe it's because since the level system for Ys I&II is combined in TCD, I was misjudging where I should be at to fight him.

Keep at it. He's also notably tricky for first-time players. His bouncing is predictable so try to catch him as he's coming back on/leaving the platform as to minimize the amount of gaps taken out of the center of the battlefield.
Don't do like I did and follow him diagonally across the platform, hitting him repeatedly, and cleaving the field in twain.
Also.. um.. you remembered to re-equip the Silver equipment for Fact, right? ^_^
ps: it's tough to dodge all the little fireballs, but make sure to avoid the large ones before they explode. Those do major damage.
