I'm new here and finally decided to play Ys Complete. I'm playing on a laptop with Vista, but keep getting graphical problems. I rarely ever play PC games so a lot of this is foreign to me.
Anyway, the problem is when I load the game up (Ys I), the graphics, a lot of the time, are black/white/gray. When the game loads up the Falcom logo at the beginning is gray, but then the main menu is fine. When I start a new game, it goes to a black screen with music playing and stays there until I hit Enter when takes me to the beginning of the game which is in all black/white/gray. The only way I can get it into color is by going to Option, Screen and then Frame Design. Playing with that brings it to color but it always goes back to black/white/gray after a couple of minutes.
Can anyone help me?

The drivers were up to date and I downgraded them and that didn't help.

Thanks for the tips. I played around with it more and noticed something; it only does this at the beginning. Once I get out of bed and leave the house it's fine. Is there supposed to be an into movie once you select the first game? Because it seems like something is playing, though it doesn't show.
Oh, and maybe you can answer this. Is the upcoming PSP North American release of Ys I+II Chronicles a port of Complete? If so, I may just wait and play that.

Alright, well, thanks for all of the help. I'm going to play around with this a bit more and if I can't get the graphical problem to go away (it starts back up again eventually as I went on in the game) then I'll just wait for the PSP port.
Much appreciated!

That'll happen on at least Windows 7 64-bit. The only fix I've found is to kill explorer.exe, then run the game (I'm not kidding). I made a batch file to do this on my computer..
@echo off taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe Start /wait ys1_win.exe Start explorer.exe
Additionally, I also set ys1_win.exe to run in Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode.

It might be a problem with the English patch. Have you tried reinstalling the new Ys I patch by Nighwolve? I hear it supports Vista. Does the Jap. version run in colour?
I had a lot of problems with Vista, for example it was a lot harder to run the Diablo series until I overrode it with the Win. 7 system.
Maybe, also, you could try compatibility mode in the Setup icon. I think there are some Vista options.
This might cheer you up: My intros also run in sound mode. To help, I installed Ys with Daemon tools and it ran OK. But this might have been because I have some movies from the games anyway, what I did was replace them into the Ys Data folder over the original intro movie. If you could get the right movies from somewhere else, you could even run Ys with an Ys Origin intro...at the moment my Ys II begins with a trailer for Ys VI - because I prefer that one.
