The first official Brandish 4 patch has been released! Visit www.scribesslate.com/brandish4 for info and the download. Adoru is pretty busy, so we're looking for any detail-oriented Japanese speakers. Drop me a line if you're interested in helping us out. DTagg

Is it a PC-only game?

AYE! Sorry for the anti-climactic presentation, but Adoru is the one with style and he's too busy to help out with this stuff right now . This patch is an official release, but I was the only beta tester I could find, lol. Lemme know if you run across any problems. Also, I'm hoping to get a much broader version out within a month or so, provided I find a few people with interest in getting some video game translation credit under their belt. THIS GAME IS AMAZING!!!! PLAY PLAY PLAY!!!

MP83I'd probably start with Brandish 2. I think that has a solid translation and the feel and style of the Brandish series comes out strongest there. Brandish 4 is unique, in my opinion, and would be better appreciated after you've tasted some older Falcom sweetness.....

Brandish 4 has the best unreleased OST. That is all.

Brandish 4 has the best unreleased OST. That is all. Who needs an OST when the music is presented in easily accessible .wav files? Now an arrangement... Bramble, Forbidden Power and Retribution JDK Band Arranges please!

Well WOW! That sure came outta nowhere! But only 5% translated? If you're looking for a beta tester, I'm always up for that if it's about Brandish. I'll install the game and patch tonight and let you know how it goes. MP83: You can just jump right into Brandish 4 without having played the previous 3 if you wish so. New story, new characters and new camera system separate it from the original trilogy so much that it almost might have been a new series. Though I very much recommend playing Brandish TDR, Brandish 2 SNES and Brandish 3 PC98 someday!

Ouch, the game keeps crashing when I get into control!
I made a full install, ~400MB. The on disc setup says it's version 1.0.0.1, from the budget Mediakite release with the ugly yellow banner declaring it was cheap. I played the game unpatched a bit to check if it works, which it does, and changed the BGM to wave instead of midi.
After that I put the patch in the folder and started it, ending with something like "patch complete, everything is done". Now the game boots up fine, but each and every snippet of Japanese text is just blank now, apart from the dots (...). Even in the sound menu the midi/wave and volume options are invisible. When I start a game both the intro and ingame text have completely disappeared apart from the dots, but I still have to wait for text to scroll or click away.
Despite the lack of text everything keeps running during the scenes, but the moment I'm supposed to get full control of my character the program freezes and I get the generic "Unexpected Error, send/don't send report".
When I restart the game and use the continue option, the game gives me a very English "The previous session was interrupted unexpectedly.", after which I get thrown back to the start of the prison.
Also, in the main menu I hear wave music according to my preferences, but when the scene in the dungeon starts it reverts to midi for some reason.
Weird stuff, did anyone else get it to work?

Sardien,
Thanks for checking that out. I've used the patch on a few different boxes without issue, but I'm sure there's a lot to work out if you're having those kinds of problems. I definitely needed to know!
Lemme check it out and I'll post on the site how it goes. Again, if anybody has the energy to help with translation, feel free to drop me a line.
Again, THANK YOU for checking that out. Helps me out a ton!

Come to think of it, I didn't realize there was more than one version of the game. I've probably been working with one version. If there's more than one version (which it sounds like you have a different one, Sardien), I'll buy it and make a quick patch for it.

I assume that it's probably just a version of the game with one of the Falcom patches pre-installed. To make sure it wasn't just a fluke I deleted and reinstalled the game twice (full and minimal install) and applied the patch again (had to delete it from the registry before I could do this, seems it doesn't get deleted along with the normal Br4 uninstall). Sadly it didn't change a thing, here's the error report: AppName: br4_win.exe AppVer: 1.0.0.0 ModName: br4_win.exe ModVer: 1.0.0.0 Offset: 000232c3 I could easily throw up a few files (or more) from the disc for private download for the sake of development. Let me know, it would be faster than getting yet another copy shipped to your home.

Thanks Sardien!
Right now, the executable is the only thing that Adoru has had a chance to translate, so that's the only file the patch updates. So yeah, that was going to be my next thing, getting a hold of the executable from your install disk.
I'm sorry to burden you like this, considering how much trouble you've gone through to help me out already, but could I get a copy of the executable from your disk, Sardien? I think you're right about it just being a patch-installed release. I'll run a diff check to find out.
If you don't have time right now, it's all good. I'm in school now, so it would probably take me a little while to get to it anyway.
deepest thanks,
Dtagg

All I know about Brandish 4 is that it had that song Battle Field which is the best Falcom song nobody's ever heard

No problem, really. Without hacking or Japanese skills, this is all I can do to help out, so I'll gladly take it. Here's the executable, and just in case added the setup too. www.megaupload.com/?d=NNUNRD9NFor fun, I also added the Slime whacking mini-game that was on the disc. Can anyone beat my fantastic score of 55? --- EDIT: LunarIMO, that 'honor' goes to Brandish 3's Blood from a Stone: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUsi0jNPVRU

The pedant in me feels compelled to point out that the actual title of that song should be plain boring 'Magma'. I'm not sure who managed to translate that as Blood from a Stone (perhaps the same person who gave us 'A test to become mighty'?) but yeah... not that it in any way detracts from the awesomeness of the song. Still, when it comes to Brandish music I feel compelled to return, as always, to the contemplative wonder that is Brandish 3's Tantoll.

I'm trying to remember the name of this one track from the Brandish 2 OST... I heard an arrange of it at a random japanese site and fell in love instantly. It had a really weird name, might have started with G or M, can't remember.

The track names are translated wrong? Guess it's true though, initially I was surprised at the very wordy track names compared to Brandish 1 and 2 but I just got used to them. The files were just named like this, and I didn't have the cd to cross check. Man, how I'd love to own this soundtrack, but it's not on sale ever even on Japanese auctions. which I've never heard before, seldane.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=gaming&thread=3960&page=18#124061I can't believe you forgot about hearing this song. This had better not happen again! Anyways, I'll be taking the music discussion to the Falcom music thread. Follow me!
