Is there a way to rebind the keys in the Ys Complete (1 and 2) games?
I played Oath first with a custom controller layout and cannot even begin to get used to this awkward button choice they decided on.
I've tried googling multiple different phrases but am not getting anything relevant to changing control schemes.

I have used a program named Xpadder in the past for games which did not provide an in-game controller config option. It used to be free, but it appears they are charging for it these days. If you can track down a copy of the free version, it is worth a look

Hmm, I believe there's some buttons you can switch around in the second "Options" menu (top choice), but I don't remember what they do exactly (sorry, it's been a while since I've played these games in English). It doesn't seem to have any effect on my keyboard settings, though.
Other than that, your best bet would probably be to go to the controller's config program, and re-map the keys there. In any case, these two games are easily playable with a keyboard, and unlike YsF, I can't play them very well with a controller.

The only time I've used xpadder was for my PS2 Guitar Hero controller, so maybe I'll have to look into more options, like if the analog sticks work, as I assume I need to just have it hit keyboard keys and it won't let me use analog.
As for my controller's config program, it doesn't have one, just a standard windows gamepad testing thing. I use my PS2 controller.
And no, I don't know anything about any Ys game but Oath and Origin.
Regardless of the lack of an attack (maybe jump?) button, I don't want to hit triangle to confirm everything. The standard in every game is X (FF7 was O, but all later FF's were X, gasp). My setup: X attack/confirm, O jump/cancel, [] Magic (in Oath), Triangle for Boost (Oath) and the shoulder buttons to toggle my spells. I'm not playing with a different setup, nor with a keyboard. Actually, I don't even know the keyboard controls.
You'd think by remaking the game they'd add configurable controls, what a shame. *looks at FFXIV*

Bah. Be a man! Play it with the keyboard!

Alright, managed to get ingame and found there's an in depth options screen. Why it's not on the title screen is beyond me.
Was able to rebind the controls, well, as good as they're going to get apparently.
Now I have to deal with the character sprites not turning when they move. They only change direction when the screen updates (like shifting areas or scenes).
Edit: Vsync fixed the sprite bug. 2,000 FPS vs 85, yikes.
I suppose the screen resolution isn't changeable?
The irony of that statement. I play everything with a keyboard and actively defend PC gaming when people throw up "LOL PLAY IT WITH A CONTROLLER" statements. *looks at FFXIV again*.
However, some games are either too far gone to play with a keyboard or actually fit better for gameplay or comfort reasons. Because these seem like console RPGs, I'd rather play with a controller than a keyboard, for both gameplay and comfort reasons. Sitting back and relaxing in my chair with the controller in my lap alleviates my keyboard induced wrist pain. (I actually wish I could play The Force Unleashed with my controller but the idiots porting it made it only work with a 360 controller and I have yet to find a way to get mine to work with it)
Though, I did have trouble targeting in Oath with the analog stick. I resorted to the dpad for a few boss battles since I was missing a lot of my shots, resulting in failure. Whether because my PS2 controller is a few years old and the analog sticks aren't in prime shape (the axises don't quite match up half the time), or just because I suck at analog precision, I can only guess.

Controllers are good for speedrunning unless you know where the right keys are!

I don't know about that. While I do think an analog stick could potentially optimize movement in Ys I & II, it doesn't really work well for me; the keyboard is simply more precise, in my opinion. Controllers would probably work better for the platforming Ys games, but probably not so much with the other titles.

For me, it's bad analog sticks that are the biggest problem. For some reason, mine love to twitch back up, especially when trying to select something. There's that issue, and I also find it's easier to transition to the mouse from the keyboard, and then back, in the instances where using the mouse is faster (Alice did mention speedrunning).
Besides, Ys I & II Complete just feels unnatural with a controller - it was intended for the PC, after all (ironic that that argument holds little weight for YsF).

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree then. For what it's worth, I do like the feel of the analog movement, but for Ys I & II, I just can't control it as accurately as I want (especially Ys II, when it comes to aiming fireballs). I wonder if Chronicles will fix this...

Well, I got the "Chronicles" version of the games from MP83 (not because of this topic, mind you), and I still stand by what I said: I enjoy the feel of analog movement in these games, but it's just too hard for me to control precisely.
