Oh, they play just fine but they sound LIKE CRAP. Once I get home, I'll upload 2 MIDIs (Ice Ridge and Termination in SC-88 Pro) that someone recorded as MP3s as an example how the SHOULD sound. :\ And the Sendspace link works just fine. :O Edit~~~~~ VOILA! Les examples! www.mediafire.com/download.php?yf8j4aa0nben69uDo MIDIs sound this awesome on your system!? Cuz they sure don't for me! Aside from Ys Origin's Termination, I think this one (SC-88 Pro) is pretty damn sweet.

Those sounded a lot better than the original links you gave, for sure. Not to say that the MIDIs are bad, necessarily (well, to me =p), but there is a clear difference in music quality. I'm afraid I won't be of any help to you, then.
Actually, I was referring to the Proboards link, but MP83 seems to have fixed it. I wonder, did he also edit in those smilies? You never seem to use those. =p

The thing is, for it to sound that good, you'd pretty much have to play back the SC-88 version on an actual Roland SC-88, or the SC-88 Pro version on an actual Roland SC-88 Pro. (The SC-88 seems to go for $150-200 on eBay, and the SC-88 Pro for $250-300 -- I don't think they're especially common pieces of hardware except among professional composers). The problem with MIDIs is that they sound different on pretty much every device -- instruments that the composer expected to be quiet might be fairly loud and vice versa, or an instrument might be used to create a certain effect that's lost when that instrument sounds different. Still, since you asked... I have a soundfont that I rather like, and I used a copy of Timidity I had lying around to turn the GM MIDIs from Ys I Eternal into MP3s (and uploaded it here if you'd like to give it a listen), but even that's kind of a mixed bag -- a lot of the slower tracks (like Feena) came out pretty well, but some of the faster tracks (like Holders of Power)... not so much. But it'll probably be a step up for those whose computers can't play MIDI very well. Neither set of the Ys II ones really sound right with this soundfont, though.

I used to use Timidity for the Ys Eternal and Ys II Eternal MIDIs too. XD
In fact, I used to love that format as well as S3Ms and MODs.
Ah, the good old days~~~~~~~
