Question is a spoiler, it is hidden below. Thanks for your help!
Is it possible to beat Scias when you first fight him in Altago City? (After he defeats Driesen) I see the story continues if you lose, which makes me think losing against him is part of the story. I'm just wondering. I don't want to miss out on anything if you can beat him, but right now even at level 51 I keep getting whipped.
You're not supposed to beat him, because he starts getting ridiculously powerful the more you hurt him. I have heard that if you somehow manage to pull it off, however, the game freezes up or something.

Thanks guys! I had to make sure before proceeding. There's a fight with Eldeel in Mask of the Sun PS2 that you don't have to win, but you can if your level is high enough. Nothing changes though. I just kept thinking Scias might have some different dialogue if it was possible to beat him there.
I had a really easy time flash guarding his standard attacks. Especially if you wait until the 4th hit, you can see it coming, plus there's a pause to give you extra time. Then I'd counter with a skill and dash away. If he used that wind slash, I was typically sitting back and feeling safe and would have to dodge on impulse.
The fact that I remember these details makes me think I've played the game too many times. But then I remember it's an Ys game, and there's no such thing as too many.
I usually don't Flash Guard. I never did against Geis, but I sure as heck did in the arena as well! I'm on Hard mode, so flash guarding became more of a necessity than usual. On normal, I could beat the arena without flash guarding.
I've been saving all of the points before boss battles up until the Wind Dragon. I accidentally overwrote the bird/chariot fight, though. I'm a little miffed about that.

I actually didn't flashguard once the entire game. And for good reason:
Just where the hell in the game do they explain flashguard??? I didn't even know about it till I read something in a gamefaqs thread after beating it! Obviously I overlooked something pretty fuckin' important!
He who gets screwed by tentacle monsters should see to it he does not become one.
I dunno, man. I figured out Mask of the Sun (me first Ys game) just fine.
BUT, I also believe -- as I mentioned a few times before -- that people that play Chronicles for the first time after Felghana, SEVEN, and Napishtim may FROWN MIGHTILY at the game due to its simplicity.
Hopefully, there are many that appreciate the older battle system and all though. :D
