I know that quite a few of you are shoot 'em up fans and players! I've been playing some on the iPod touch lately (such as Astrowings) and starting to really like the genre. Of course, I suck hardcore~ getting blown up everywhere and needing to replay stages a bit to upgrade weapons and all that. :D! Soo~~~~ I'm just looking for suggestions and such on console or Windows shmup games that I can play, preferably ones that have an easy mode and won't get me killed right off the bat. ^^~ Been thinking about getting 1942: Join Strike for the PS3 since I liked the demo, actually ...

The Söldner-X games on PSN are both very newbie-friendly. I actually managed to beat both of them.
They also look really pretty.

Strangely, I love them too, despite the lack of story and my own lack of any conceivable skill at them.
Ikaruga on Dreamcast is pretty good. Despite my lack of skill, I got pretty damn far on normal mode (almost to the end, and you get more continues the longer you play)
I also recently played Lords of Thunder on the TurboGrafx, and loved it. You can buy health and shields, so you can take more hits than in many Shmups. Also: Emulator = savestates. Makes the genre FAR more enjoyable to the game-reflexedly challenged.

Hirm, I know there's been talk about purchasing games from the Japanese PSN before but I can't remember all the details. XD
I would pretty much have to get a gift card or something to make the purchase (as I don't have a credit card with a billing address in Japan), yar?
I think I can devote one of the PSPs to be attached to my Japanese PSN account so I won't need to do that re-activating thing for whichever country account I'm using.

Well, it's "Shmups" for a start.

The only real challenge then is picking an address, since it HAS to be an actual Japanese street address in order for PSN to create the account. So you'll need to do some searching online to find a viable street address. But I already have a Japanese account AND a European one. D: I used Falcom's address as usual for PSN JP. XD And indeed, you know my ways well! Not having physical media is a GOOD thing indeed! XD I'll look into getting a PSN gift card then. :D If it weren't for the Ys games having limited editions, I would have jumped onto PSN and bought them that way. :B Guess I'll do that for Chronicles since there won't be an PE or something? (Also, curse you, yen! You and your high exchange rate!)

Salamander isn't insanely difficult at all, like just as hard as Gradius, so with a bit of practice (or savestates) you'll be done in no-time flat.

So it won't cost extra, it'll just be a preorder bonus?
Wait does that mean no soundtrack? D:

Well, it's "Shmups" for a start. [/UselessContributionToTopic] But that sounds too weird. D: *equally useless contribution* On the topic of Gradius though, there's a part way waaaay early in the game that I cannot pass. :P Maybe if I had a billion lives to work with ...

I don't really know what you're looking for (maybe reading the post more carefully would help - who knows).. Shoot'em ups? Hmmm... Maybe, Touhou games? At least music is awesome.

Soldner and Einhander? Are you guys trying to make her hate shooters?! Soldner, at least the first one, is kinda bad. Misuse of colors makes bullets hard to see, and the cave sections are just brutal for a beginner. Einhander IS very awesome indeed, but also way to hard for a beginner in my opinion at least.
I've always found the Raiden series to be fun and accessible shooters. Star Soldier for PSP is pretty cool too, if only for the gimmick of holding your PSP sideways to play. Then there's the creative Thunder Force 5, which is the "Contra: Hard Corps" of space shooters to me. All nice and forgiving games.
If you want to go with indie games, there's Cloudphobia (stylish!) and IMPETUTH (Fantasy shooter, which jeffx recommended over here IIRC).

Downloading the IMPETUTH demo. :D And yeah, the game was mentioned here and I meant to check it out. Kind of forgot. :P
I just watched the trailer for it and for some reason, thought that there sure be a DOGI SHMUP. ^^;;;; Not sure what he would be shooting (as in what sort of weapon) though.
Maybe fists? Pikkards? Adols?
Walls? :P
OMG! The IMPETUTH demo is so much fun! ^O^ I almost beat the boss. TT She/he only had less than a quarter of HP left! I think I was only able to survive so long since I managed to get a shield~ But it eventually broke. ;;o;;~
$20 US for full game, eh? Hirm~~~~ :DDDDD

Well, you DID say console.
Giga Wing is pretty awesome, though you can only find the first 2 on Dreamcast, haha. I never played the third, but you can find that one on PS2, apparently. EU only for english, too.

The only shmup you need is Raiden. Any of them.
Maybe some Thunder Force, too.

I favor horizontal shmups so that'll reflect in my suggestions:
G Darius for PSX/Saturn - has a ton of options you can tweak to make the game easier or harder as you get better. Also being a Darius game it has multiple routes to keep you entertained. Long ago when I was in high school, my girlfriend and I would play G Darius together and she wasn't much of an action game gamer at all.
Parodius series - Goofy and entertaining the games also tend to feature a large difficulty scale that you can use to ease into shmups in general. At the lowest setting it's a notable occurrence if you even get shot at! Gokujou Parodius is my favorite, followed by Sexy Parodius, but Sexy Parodius is the hardest in the series (especially if you're going for the best ending).
Darius Twin for SNES - Kinda dull but incredibly easy until the final stage. And even then there is an exploit to get through it without problems if you really need to.
Raiden Fighters Aces for 360 - 3 games in one! Also not at all easy if you're trying for a 1cc, but you revive where you die and can keep continuing so that helps take a bit of the edge off the game. Work towards lowering your number of deaths!
Gradius for NES - seems daunting at first until you realize that the shield covers your entire ship (instead of just the front). Keep that in mind and the challenge of the game turns into not hitting walls and minimizing getting hit by bullets.

Mushihimesama Futari (360) : Original, and maybe Maniac mode, but forget Ultra, it's just inhuman. And the game is just amazing, and it's region free ! Touhou 08 (PC) : Easy and Normal mode are really simple, i've 1cc both of them in a couple of tries. Lords of Thunder (MCD) : Much easier than the PCE-CD version, awesome STG. Hellfire S (PCE-CD) : Much easier than the MD version (and much more beautiful), really good game too ! Dimahoo (AC, playable with MAME) : Not a really easy shmup, but not really hard either. Very good game also, and a bit different from the previous one. Deathsmiles 2X (360) : This one is MUCH easier than the first one. Hope it'll reach the US too ! Shikigami no Shiro series (AC, Wii, GC, PS2, 360) : I'm not a fan of this series, but there are some fans, and they aren't really difficult games.

The best way to get into shooters, is just play the most hardest thing you could think of, and get really good at it. However if you really want a shooter for beginers then I suggest the following.
It has cutscenes, with pre-reboot scripts and plenty of monkey jokes. You can also learn math, I am sure your well within the age requirements of this game.

Ha ha. I think you're the one playing a game, good Regis!
I'd mostly agree with you about the challenge flooding concept, as it's how I got good at both chess and FPSs (the latter of which I don't ever particularly care about, yet have become quite good). . . but bullet hell shooters just take too much precision reflexes for me to ever adapt. The margin of error in some Shemps [intentional] is just too damn tight for anything but frustration from me.

Touhou 08 (PC) : Easy and Normal mode are really simple, I've 1cc both of them in a couple of tries. Somehow, I fail to believe this. :P I don't think you know me well enough to realize that I suck in just about every gaming genre known to humankind. For example!: - I can't even get past the first boss is both The House of the Dead and The House of the Dead II.
- I can't get through Time Crisis II without swiping the play card like mad to pump in credits like no tomorrow and I've played that game more than 10 times at the arcade.
- I forever play Ys games on Normal. I SUPPOSE I can try moving up to Hard but I'm near certain that I will see the Game Over screen at least 10 times per boss. And level grinding can only take you so far, especially when it comes to the final battles. ^^;
- Detective/mystery games make my brain explode. Seriously, I can't play Phoenix Wright without a walkthrough.
- Getting 98% to near perfect in rhythm games == near impossible for me even on the lowest difficulty setting. There will usually be that ONE note that will be off even if everything else was perfect. >_>
- I can rarely deliberately make chains or combo in puzzle games like Bejeweled.
- I find it insanely hard to shoot down A-Wings, TIE Interceptors and TIE Advances in TIE Fighter. In fact, any space sims with zippy ships == headaches for me. If it were nothing but bombers or just putt-putt slow ships in general then it'd be okei. Well, except for cruisers, frigates, or any massive ships because lots of laser turrets and torpedoes or rockets == ow.
- Cannot micro-manage for the life of me in RTS games.
- FPS == insta-death.
- Fighting games == insta-death.
- Platformers == get hit too much or can't move fast enough to get to the next platform and consequently get squished by the moing screen or jump into a bottomless pit in a panic and die.
- Action games like Devil May Cry == Easy mode!
- Hack and Slash could be done on Easy or Normal. But with enough grinding and better weapons and stuff, I can do Hard, but alas, I won't be able to finish the later stages. XD
- Depending on how abstract puzzles are in adventure games, I may or may not be able to figure out the majority of the game on my own. Usually though, somewhere along the way, I'll need a walkthrough.
........... Myst needs to blow up.
The only thing that I am remotely "good" at (if you can even call it good) is that I hardly die/game over in RPGs like the Final Fantasy stuff. If it were Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Wizardry, etc. with the first person view dungeon stuff then yes, I will die quite a few times. :B But I guess one reason I'm like this is that I don't take the time to "learn" how to play games such as strategies or just doing stuff to hone my skills, so to speak. I just get into them and do whatever it takes to complete them. XD Most of all though, I play for fun~! ^o^ As a random aside -- I still feel shmup is a goofy term/word. (Not that its dyslexic version "shump" is any better, really. XD)
