Fully aware of your gaming skills, I stand by my recommendations.
Gradius NES is listed last for a reason. As a kid it'd hand me my ass, but as an adult I've looped the game 3 times without dying. And I don't consider myself really that great at shmups.

Fully aware of your gaming skills, I stand by my recommendations. AND YET YOU STILL WANTED TO DO A ROUND OF Ys VS. SORA NO KISEKI!? Thankees for the recommendations. :D I'm gonna make a list of games to look for. I suppose I should check out some emulators too. :\ (.... Is there any reason why the filter drops Sora on Kiseki to lowercase? WHY CAN'T I YELL THAT TITLE!? Seriously, the punctuation and case-changing filters are beginning to annoy me.)

Lets see. Gradius games are a mix of easy and hard, depending on the game but good for beginners. The apple store has Espagaluda for iPods and iPhones which is pretty easy. Most Touhou games on PC are easy until the last and bonus stages (the difficulty comes from grazing and 1ccing)

AND YET YOU STILL WANTED TO DO A ROUND OF Ys VS. Sora no Kiseki!? Yeah well my Dogi was woefully underleveled for the fight. Actually at that point I couldn't believe there could be someone that bad at video games. It was only after PAX that I saw a friend's boyfriend try to play Toy Story 3 and fail miserably for an hour. Lets see. Gradius games are a mix of easy and hard, depending on the game but good for beginners. The apple store has Espagaluda for iPods and iPhones which is pretty easy. Most Touhou games on PC are easy until the last and bonus stages (the difficulty comes from grazing and 1ccing) I'd say stay away from any real Gradius game until much better, but Gradius I NES and Gradius III SNES are the easiest out of the home ports. I'd also say that Touhou games aren't real shmups anyhow. They're more like bullet dodging simulators. There exist many better bullet hell shooters out there that actually feature things like... you know, stage design and good art.

R-Type!!
That's my favorite schmup series, and the games tend to be easy on the first levels. 1 and 2 were released as R-Types for PSX (the first game's one of the best schmups ever, IMO), and PSX also had R-Type Delta, also a great game and you can select the starting difficulty. PS2 got R-Type Final, which I think's a pretty good game for beginners 'cause of its slow pace and many extra lives on lower difficulties.

R-Type for a beginner? Are you trollin'? ;P
R-Type, R-Type 2, Super R-Type, R-Type III are all balls to the wall hard. Delta is an amazing game, but I dunno if I could even 1cc right now. Admittedly I don't know Final But here, lets put this in context for Nuutableflip: I've never beaten the 2nd stage of R-Type 2. The 2nd! (btw you did forget to mention R-Type Dimensions for the 360. Prolly the best way of experiencing R-Type 1 & 2 for the best price)

And to think that R-Type Command is on sale on PSN! Good thing I double-checked this thread first! XD
Even better that I checked WHAT kind of game it is! Looks like it's a turn-based strategy game. @_@;;;

I'd forgotten R-Type III. And I didn't know about the version for 360.
But I don't think R-Type 1 is such a bad game for a beginner. You can get by without dying for the first couple of stages. Of course it gets pretty hardcore after that, but it's such a great game...

Even better that I checked WHAT kind of game it is! Looks like it's a turn-based strategy game. @_@;;; R-Type Final was the last R-Type shmup. R-Type Command/Tactics and R-Type Command 2/Tactics 2: Operation Bitter Chocolate are both strategy games. It's only called Command in the US. Everywhere else the title doesn't hide the wtf genre shift as much. ...I just responded because I wanted to say "Operation Bitter Chocolate"

Yeah... I will say that Iridion II is actually pretty good. I tried it a while back and was pleasantly surprised. It's probably the best-looking game on the GBA, and unlike its predecessor, it can back those graphics up with good gameplay.
I still want to play the Nanostray games, though.

Play Meteos.
It isn't it a shmup... but it's so damn good and blood pumping it might as well be one.

Oh wow Iridion II looks like a good version of Axelay. Nanostray doesn't look too bad either.. for being portable games
Meteos was fun. It was one of the major reasons I bought a DS. Then I ground out all the unlockables, had nobody to play against, and eventually sold it. I loved the 1 vs 3 battle against true Meteos
Thinking back on my shmuping career I recalled Tyrian for DOS. Now that's an easy shmup, but borderline bland and kinda hard to get working on modern systems. It was even ported to the Homebrew Channel, but I've had that version crash my Wii now and again

Nanostray is alright. The second one is better, but still not really that good.

Still haven't ordered the PSN card. XD
ARGH. I'm making an order at YesAsia right now and dammit, the cheapest card they have is 3000 yen which is $55.51 CAD. >_>
Guess I should look elsewhere seeing that there's no shipping involved .... er, I assume there isn't?
Ah, Play-Asia has the 1000 yen one. I shall get~!

Just started R-Type Delta meself (formerly unaware of its existence), and I like it. Got whacked pretty quick, but I wasn't even trying to exploit the epsxe's more important functions (SAVE STATE REDEFINES VIDEO GAMES!!!!).

Spoke with a very knowledgeable friend tonight and he had the following suggestions:
-Giga Wing Generations (PS2, but no US release.. only JP and EU). If you get down the bullet shield mechanic Giga Wing is easy and Generations is a lot easier than the DC games. -Guwange's Arrange Mode (just came out for XBLA last week) -Prehistoric Isle 2 for Neo Geo (you'll have to emulate this one. It was a pretty out there suggestion but he really felt it is an easy game)
Nothing like single-handedly causing the extinction of the dinosaurs... 2
He commented that he can't believe it's from the same guys who did Blazing Star... and well I don't even consider Blazing Star that hard until the final 2 levels if you're going for a 1cc, so Prehistoric Isle 2 should be a good stepping stone then
(yes you fight a giant morphing baby. It's the final boss)

No, that's not what I mean at all! Don't worry, there'll be bonus goodies -- at LEAST a soundtrack, most likely, though possibly not a lot more. And it MIGHT cost extra, I'm not sure... or it might not. Basically, as I understand it, it's going to be the same exact thing as an LE, but with more limited quantities (i.e. it'll ONLY be available to those who preorder, not readily made available in stores otherwise). -Tom Actually, I'm surprised XSEED doesn't just handle pre-orders instead of LE's. Not that I don't mind LE's, but it seems like it would be more cost-effective if they can estimate the sales that a particular title would net them.

THERE IS NOTHING LITTLE ABOUT COTTON Your kidding me right? You can buy the actually Arcade board, and or cart. HAve something to treasure instead of a stupid file, The Iphone I could understand but the big bad PS3 system??? Just to store a game, that has also been ported to the original PSX? You can also buy the game itself, or download it for free on the computer.
