This is the same feeling I have for the 360 version of Guwange - of course I would prefer a physical copy, but as the only physcial release is a $500 PCB (that isn't easy to find anyway), I'll take a $10 download version that not only allows me to legally play an awesome game but also shows I'm prepared to put my money where my mouth is and support companies I love. In any case... Nuu, I really wouldn't worry about dying lots, it's all part of the experience Even "hardcore" shmups like DoDonPachi allow you to just keep hitting continue until you reach the end of the game. Here's a few recommendations from me (sorry if they're repeats) - Trouble Witches (PC) ESPgaluda II (iPhone, seeing as you mentioned you have one) Crescent Pale Mist (not a traditional shmup at all, but if you like dodging bullets this is out on US PSN) Pop n Twinbee (SNES) Gradius V (PS2) Gunners Heart (PC) There are of course tons more, but I was trying to think of ones that didn't delight in killing you. That, and my coffee hasn't kicked in yet.

Oh yeah do you have a 360? Triggerheart Excella is pretty easy with a neat little story. It's easy enough that you can basically continue until you finish, although you get a different ending if you 1cc iirc.
It might be on PSN but I'm not sure to be honest.

And nobody mentions Zero Wing for the Genesis? I think that's an awesomely simple beginner shooter! Seriously, I've been pretty content just upgrading to a level 3 (I think) homing gun!

Nope, XBLA only as far as download platforms go, but it had Dreamcast and PS2 releases in Japan alongside the arcade version. It's a pretty fun game though, shameless as it is.

Wheeee! Played some Cotton 100% just now. It's fun but it seems hard as hell to get those little crystals. D:
Managed to get up Stage 5 on my second try at the game. (Playing on Easy. With 9 lives. HUR.) Half the time I kept talking to the screen and telling it to stop shooting at me.
I swear, lava balls spewing everywhere plus those stupid archers firing arrows is not fun to try and dodge!
I kind of hate how the environment can kill you. >:/ In stage 4, I think, there are these tombstone things that look like innocent background art but the moment you fly into one, you die! >_>
I like the music in the game though!~
I also downloaded the Trouble Witches demo~! It seems a lot more fun than Cotton as I enjoyed it right from the get-go. ^o^
I do wish there wasn't so much dialogue though. :P (Yes, in Story Mode. :PP)
Man, all these witch shmups makes me wanna load up Tales of Phantasia PS to play the silly Groovy Arche mini game again. Maybe now I can do a bit better in it. :E (I somehow doubt it though.)
Hirm, after playing some of the horizontal shooters, I think I like the top-down/vertical ones a bit more.

I'm going to repeat my recommendation of Ikaruga. It runs great on NullDC (dreamcast emu), and I think it's a fantastic Shemp. You switch between black and white, dealing extra damage to opposite color enemies, and absorbing same color bullets. You also get bonus points upwards of MASSIVE increases for chain kills, and while I never play games for score, I actually strategize in Ikaruga a lot, because high score = more lives = get much farther in the game. Also, the bosses are epic. You should really give it a try.
My other recommendation, though I've yet to play it: Radiant Silvergun is OFTEN counted as one of the best Sega Saturn games of all time. It certainly LOOKS good.

I love the music to Radiant Silvergun. TT~ I never looked into it since I never emulated anything other than SFC/SNES games for the longest time. XD I think I gotta start a thread about looking for good emulators. XD (Of course, on top of that, I gotta find the games themselves too. Gooooooogle, here I come!) I've been playing Perfect Cherry Blossom on and off (only on Easy though I did try Stage 1 on Normal too.)~! Stage 4 scares me and I've yet to watch the replays for Stage 5 and on since I figure if Stage 4 was nasty, the next few will only be worse. Watched a Lunatic mode gameplay of Stages 1 and 2 and holy crap. DD: It was graze mania. D: The player was even ramming enemies from the side! DDD:

I'll save you the trouble, and list my own recommendations. Everyone has different preferences, but these work for me. NES: fceux Genesis: gens SNES: zsnes N64: Project64 Dreamcast: NullDC Saturn: SSFAlpha TurboGrafx: Magic Engine Playstation: epsxe NDS & GBA: No$GBA and No$zoomer extension Gamecube & Wii: Dolphin (requires a dual core processor) Here's a good directory for any I didn't mention; it lists popular votes to give an idea of which systems work best: www.emulator-zone.comThere's also a single (excellent) site I suggest for ISOs and roms, but I don't know if it violates forum rules to post it (does it?). You can usually find them just by googly moogling anyway.

Good list. I would just change Gens to Gens+ for clarity. Gens development ended years ago, but Gens+ adds Master System, Sega CD, and 32X support
There was a different Saturn emulator that a friend suggested a bit ago, but I don't remember the name nor do I really mess with PSX/Saturn-era emulation or anything newer than that.
...with one exception in order to play LSD Dream Emulator on PSX

I still use VBA CE. I'm pretty lazy, but is it worth switching over to no$gba? I have a Supercard DSTWO for my actual DS(i), so I definitely don't need its DS emulation.

I've used a lot of the no$ emulators before. They're alright, except they screw with your computer's boot-up process and complain because you didn't donate... I'd stick with VBA M/CE.

According to wyrd, as long as it's not about Falcom piracy specifically, it's okay. >_> I used to use Romulation.net for all the DS stuff but they've since removed all their DS (and maybe even Nintendo in general??) games since some legality-loving people came down on them. I know that site has a crap ton of games for other systems though. I just never looked at them. :P

I recommend Emuparadise.org. It's where emus live. (ever eat one? They're surprisingly delicious!) Aside from the red meat birds, they have almost every console ISO I've ever looked for. Sorry for the late reply; I've been working my ass off all week. My spine is now held up by nothing. But, in response, I actually have to respectfully disagree with His Majesty Moderator Maggot III. Oh wait, when discussing Emulators there is no respectful disagreement. Let's see if I can phrase it right: STFU NOOB, IDOOTS SOOLDNT EMOOLATE!!!! kidding, of course. But yeah, I think Unsavory may have been using a different version than me, becuase I've never had any problems with 2.6. Not with boot-up or donation prompts. Also, the version needed to access the EX functions in the no$zoomer is 2.6a, which (technically) requires a donation. Of course, I've heard alot of people just download it off rapidshare anyway. . . Personally, I'd recommend no$zoomer over the actual hardware, because, while you lose the stylus gimmick (unless you have a touch screen) to mouse-work, you can alter the screen dimensions to your liking. I set the screens side by side and reduce the ancillary screen to 40 percent, blowing the game screen up to half the monitor (which on a 32" screen, beats the bloody hell outta that pissy little handheld). Then again, it's all a matter of preference.

Hmmm... hmmm... well, as a Moderator, I didn't feel right posting that link, and I'm kinda glad you did! That's where I go, too. I'm having a field day putting those games on my Wii. As for your experience with no$, you may be right. My experience with that one is VERY dated -- I've only used the latest version to emulate the Zelda Oracle games, back when those were NEW! I REALLY need to consider hacking again... specifically, Four Swords. If I recall, a couple of the buttons are unused -- perhaps I could enable switching similar to the GCN port, instead of nerfing bosses for a single player mode... one button would toggle between the Links, and another button would enable dual-control. In theory, it's do-able... in practice, it would be a headache. I'm still anything BUT an expert, but it couldn't hurt to try.

NOOOoooooo! You're supposed to call me a noob back! Have you never seen on online discussion about emulation before?! Sheeesh!
Flip to the serious side of the oreo: how are the Oracle games, comparatively to the rest of the Zeldars? I didn't even know of their existence until X-Play mentioned there being 6 handheld Zeldas a couple months back, and I did some digging. I've never played a Gameboy Color game, but might be willing to go retro for the sake of a good Zelda. (by "good": Link to the Past is still my old school favorite)

Ah, right, kinda like hacking convos -- those are ALWAYS fun to read! @_@
The Oracle games... I'm starting to have a falling out with them. I used to LOVE them, but I'm realizing they kinda... don't compare. I wrote about them a lot. I really like Seasons' overworld and bosses, the dungeons however seem a little... off. They're TOO spaceous! Yet Ages' dungeons are too busy -- in a bad way! They're busy with puzzles, and not even the kind I like. They just keep me guessing until I give up and look at a FAQ. The overworld is also overly convoluted... I hate it. It DOES also have good bosses, though. I'd basically be happy if there were some kind of Oracle boss rush.
Side note: Scott Pilgrim (the movie) is ******* SWEET! I can't ******* believe how ******** awesome this ******* movie is!!! Action packed and funny, and full of geeky, video game references and stuff. This is definitely my kind of movie. The preview for the game makes me want to play it. The movie feels like a game... the movie makes me want to play a game... and maybe, just maybe I'd like the comics too. o.o
I'm so geeking out on this.

I loved the comics (and the movie... but I loved the comics more).
Also, for a GBC Zelda game, play Link's Awakening DX. Great, great game.
