I'm planning to play Super Robot Taisen Alpha Gaiden at some point in the coming months, but am completely ignorant of the series (or, multiple series, rather). I understand that Alpha Gaiden is not the start of an original story, so I was hoping somebody more erudite could school me in whatever I need to know storywise before plunging in and confusing myself.
If anybody could help me understand all the crisscrossing plot points of the multiple series, and the game chronology, it would also help.
Furthermore, are there any other translations available aside from the ones on AGTP? (those being, Super Robot Wars, Super Robot Wars 3, and SRWAG) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know about all that, but Original Generation 1 and 2 got localized by Atlus. I'd just play those. They're on the GBA.

People play SRT for the plot? I just like being able to beat up things with Mazinger Z and Virtual On mechs If you are bothered about the plot though I would start with SRT Alpha, then play Alpha Gaiden, then play Alpha 2 and 3 - that should be the complete run for that series.

That's pretty much the same reason I own a copy of PSX Alpha 1. Pre-turn of the century a friend showed me all these great super robots fighting along side each other with their own theme songs and I had to own it. And then I never finished it due to the slow load times.
To this day I am always considering picking up Alpha 3 just for the Virtualoids (huge Virtual On fan, here). (and wait, doesn't Alpha 3 also have Macross Plus and Gundam SEED mechs? I've fallen out of love with SEED years ago but still like a lot of the mech designs)

But knowing the plot and what the characters are saying is half of what makes it so great! D:

Why wouldn't you play SRW for the story? It has some extremely awesome characters like Sanger, Ingram and Elzam to name a few. And the story itself is pretty decent too.

The story is horribly convoluted (and also terribly awesome, but not for the same reasons) due to how long each game is, and pretty much all of the PS1 and earlier games are in huge timelines/sequels. IMO Alpha Gaiden is one of the best and is fairly well self-contained without too many references to Alpha 1 other than the returning cast.

Wait, people play games not for the plot!? [Restarts Felghana, basks in hypocrisy]
are any of these patched in English other than Alpha Gaiden, and if so do you know where I can find the patches? Googling any of them just brings up Alpha Gaiden because of its popularity. (try googling a scientific concept with a band named after it sometime. Prepare for frustrated rage)
SOLD! This comment just bumped the game up a rank on the impending game list.
Sadly, I miss out on a lot of the mech discussion. Oddly, I enjoy many mech games, but not many mech anime. SEED and Destiny were alright, 00 barely kept my interest, and I honestly haven't had the motivation to check out many other series in the genre. Any with really exceptional stories?

I should really try watching more mech series. After playing SRW some, I'm really finding myself in love with super robots, but it hasn't gotten me to watch any yet. Probably gonna convince myself to watch GaoGaiGar soon.
