Click L and R at the same time. To avoid accidently using the EXTRA skill, just hold R and click L when you want to guard.

I haven't played, but I have watched, MorningSong play that boss... she hated the talky tutorials and skipped through them pretty quick. I imagine that technique would make the game a loooooot easier in some ways.

Regardless of what we think of the game, the next Ys game will probably play the same.

I didn't think much of the game at first, only until half-way through it picked up; I enjoyed playing around with the flash guard mechanic, it gave me a reason to learn enemy attack patterns. Very fun!

I wasn't too impressed with the game at first either. It took too long to get out of Altago City and then the gameplay seemed kind of "meh". The first boss battle was awesome though and kept me playing. By the time I reached Segram I was beginning to enjoy the game. Having 3 party members, lots of abilities, having to dodge more, and hunt down crafting items all added up to a nice package. I'm starting to get fond of the higher amounts of dialog as well and am liking more of the characters.
I just finished the Wind Dragon shrine last night. The bird was tough on normal but I managed to kill it on my second try and only using one potion, never switching off Adol.

Regardless of what we think of the game, the next Ys game will probably play the same. The only reason this disappoints me is that I loved the Ys VI engine so much...

drop rolling for jumping and I'd be happy again. Flash guard is pretty broken but at least it takes a little bit of skill to use. Maybe they could tighten it up so 1) you can't still flash guard if your timing is off and you get hit before the flash guard activates 2) there's actual timing to flash guarding multiple hits in a row. Currently you can just spam at any short, regular interval and you're safe

Jumping is an amazing control to have. It gives you the Z axis, which is invaluable. Not having it... just feels kinda limited.
Trying to play Link to the Past after playing Oath in Felghana, I always wish I could jump.
Plus i feel jumping allows more options for how to avoid/attack enemies.

I thought the game got worse as it progressed. I mean, the very beginning was pretty bad, but the titanos were much cooler to fight than the dragons, the music was better, there weren't as many lame party members I never used anyway, so yeah. I liked it all the way through, though.

I was more blah about the beginning of the game until fighting the dragons. I liked how every fight with them was multistaged and I'm an overall fan of dragon boss song

Likewise. I felt the game dragged on a bit too long, too. All those party members went unused, when I'd have preferred to not even have Dogi and Geis getting in my way. Still a great game, of course, but they tried to mush too much RPG into a classic ARPG formula. It threw off the equation.
And I ALWAYS try to jump in Zeldas. . . and Metal Gear Solid. . . and any game which makes your character incapable of doing such a basic human function.

though I think part of that is my general tendency to always play as a female character in games, whenever given the option, since they're so much nicer to look at. Once you start, you can never stop. I only play with male characters now when I have to deal with family, heh. Unless I'm playing Arcana Heart, in which case I'd probably deserve any reactions I get for playing a pervert's game that just so happens to be incredibly fun. I agree with your opinion on rolling, Tom. I didn't really miss jumping at all, especially since A) you don't even need it for Seven, B) some of the skills in the game act like a jump attack if FOR SOME REASON you needed to get up on some platform (which is like once in the entire game, and only if you want to exploit it to make the area easier), and C) the classic Ys games didn't have jumping, either. So yeah. On another note: I should start ending my posts with -Tomtom just for the heck of it, but I'm sure I'll forget if I try to. Then again, the temptation is getting to me...

I am officially in love with Ys VII. After Segram, the game just takes off. The environments in the Sky temple and Ruins island are really cool. The event after Ruins Island blew my socks off. I didn't expect a twist like that in the game, and the cool events and twists just kept coming. I'm impressed with the plot. While it isn't fantastic, it is much better than I expected. The dragon sanctuaries were a lot of fun (Sea Sanctuary is a bit confusing) and the variations in the dragon battles kept them interesting. I just finished off the Moon Dragon. I expected to finish the game in about 10 hours, pleasantly surprised that I am now nearing 30. Only lament is that I missed quest 12. I tried to talk to everyone, so not sure how I didn't find it

Well, uh I'm new here, but I love Ys games. Not really a long time fan of Ys, but I was a big fan since Seven, haha. The first Ys game I ever played was The Legacy of Ys Book 1 and 2 for the DS. I didn't particularly like the title, and just shoved it away after awhile. I don't actually recall why I didn't like it. This was a few years ago.
Then I heard on Siliconera about Ys 7 coming to North America. I was curious as how everyone (except a man/woman? who goes by the name of falcomgamefan) was expressing their happiness about the game coming over. Outside NISA games (Just don't like'em. Just not my thing), the readers of Siliconera seem to like the type of games I enjoy, so I put it under my radar. Shortly after, I saw the limited edition package. It was cool of Xseed to offer a neat LE like that. Buuut, I wasn't all that interested back then and planned on buying just the regular copy.
But then, it happened. I saw a gameplay preview by a xseed employee on gametrailers. I told myself, "Sweet, lets take a look at what I'll be getting into". I liked the game from the start. I've been itching for a good ARPG lately, and I didn't want to bother playing Kingdom Hearts. I don't know too many ARPGs either.
The whole game seemed interesting, but I still had no plans on buying the LE. Suddenly, the video shows the boss fight. The incredible music with the violins start playing, and the gigantic boss appears. My eyes opened wide, and said, "WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE." I knew the game that I had to buy day one, no matter what.
Fast forward a few weeks, then I got the game. I beat the game in about...15-18 hours. I'm not too picky on the length of games these days. As long as the content is actually fun and exciting, I don't care if it's 20 minutes long. I'm also on busy schedules, so I don't have the freedom to play video games too often.
Back to the game itself, what a GREAT experience it was! The gameplay and the mechanics aren't "deep", but it was just so much fun. The gameplay just had done so much right and so little wrong. The skill variety, character variety, and everything! The boss battles were challenging and actually felt like, you know, boss battles, something that's hard to see in video games these days. The music was probably few of the best I've heard in any video game, and the story actually picked up after awhile.
Now, I got the LE of Oath in Felghana, and pre-ordered 1&2 for the PSP. I'm not too far into Felghana yet, but I prefer 7 so far. Regardless, I know I'll be a fan of this series for years to come. Oh, and I'll make sure to pre-order the upcoming Trails in the Skies LE.

Ahaha, never change Megalink. Never change. Glad you overlooked the nonsense he talks and introduced yourself to a great series! Yeah, the dude had some serious problems. I don't think I ever saw a single person spend so much time expressing so much hate against a video game series that's this niche. Well, I should give him a thumbs up though sometime. I found this site thanks to his comments.

Eh, if you're a forum-er, you would have found us eventually anyway. I think ALoY is the first result when you search 'Ys forum'.
