So, they FINALLY did it. Release: End of the year in Japan. Other stuff? No mention whatsoever of TV Out leaves me feeling immensely disappointed, especially with that screen resolution. Seems my worst fears there are going to come true and they're going to use the touchscreens as an excuse to not include it. Nubs look better than the PSP's because they're raised, but we'll see. The issue of backwards compatibility was addressed as well - the system won't have a UMD Drive so on that front people are out of luck, but it WILL work with downloaded PSP games. This throws the previously easy choice of whether to buy boxed or download games off a bit for me now Anyway, discuss. Especially you, wyrd wad tom.

I can't say I'm exactly pleased with the lack of UMD capability. I'm not much of a fan of digital distribution because what if something happens and your SOL? Like with the Wii or DSi for example, if for w/e your system dies or something, you've lost all your downloaded titles and such. I just feel better owning a physical copy of something is all. that, and the PSN doesn't have every game made for the PSP, so some games aren't there. (Especially any JP/EU games in the NA PSN store.)

I can't say I'm exactly pleased with the lack of UMD capability. You expected for even a second they'd include a UMD Drive? If so then I'm not sure what to say. The format failed horribly, they ditched it at the soonest possible opportunity. Well thankfully this isn't anything like the Wii or DSi, you still have your five downloads via your PSN account.

Form factor: Ashy is pleased that the old mockups do not resemble the final product. Specs: Yes plz. :>
All told, nothing to hate. I didn't expect UMD compatibility. DS-style carts is what I expected. No reason to have it anyhow, I plan on keeping my PSP handy. Plus, a machine without moving parts - especially a handheld - is wonderful.

Incredibly hyped, mostly because I haven't seen the price yet.

Looks fine, if they fix the analog nub and improve the specs then that's really all I want from a PSP2, and it seems like both of those wishes are coming true.
Although the alleged launch lineup is pretty shit, so I'm not in a rush to get one. I suppose Uncharted is cool, but... come on. No one wants to play Uncharted on a handheld after getting used to those AMAZING visuals in the PS3 games.

Was that the sound of money staying in my wallet? Why yes, yes it was.
The PSP-1000 was rough. The PSP-2000/3000 improved on the model, although I found it still lacking. The PSPGo was a joke. This is just an insult. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I believe Sony has finally jumped the shark. *hugs his iPod touch*

I'm really not sure why people are hating so much. Varion I can understand because he's a TV-out junkie, but other than that it looks fine. It's just a prettier, stronger PSP2000 with analog controls that (hopefully) don't suck.

The d-pad actually looks like it won't break my thumb, and the 3G connectivity is a HUGE bonus. Yeah, it's probably going to be incredibly expensive, but what else would you expect from Sony? It sounds like this is more like a portable PS3 than anything to me; MGS4 running at nearly-full frames? That's really crazy.
I'm also curious about how developers are going to utilize the touchpad. I think it's clever, myself. My only complaint right now is that the PlayStation logo below the screen looks really boring. That's all I've got.
I don't care much about battery life, I play games mostly at home. 90% of the time that I'm outside of my home with my PSP, I can use an alternate power source (i.e. car charger). Even if the life is only going to be a few hours, I won't have any issues with it.
Now just give me portable God Hand, and this is the best console ever.

Impressed with the specs, pleased with the DD BC, and a great list of developers for it; the only thing I'm worried about is region-lock, battery life and price.; those were the things that killed the 3DS for me.
Any confirmation of a 16GB internal hard drive yet?
EDIT: we already know Falcom are working on a game for it, but I want to put the rest here:

According to those Kotaku pics, it looks like it IS getting TV out. I could easily be wrong, but check out the pics oriented towards the bottom of the device. Looks TV-out-y to me.
Anyway, one look at it and I MUST HAVE IT! Thats a beautiful device.
Edit: Also, what is the touch bad on the back for?

I'm more concerned with the potential price of everything. One of the greater beacons for handheld gaming (beyond region-free gaming) was that it was a cheap investment; the platforms were usually cheap, and the games were greatly cheaper than console games.
Now here in the year 2011, it seems that principle of cheapness for more accessibility, something linked to the foundation of handheld gaming, seems to be lost. One of the complaints I have about the 3DS is the games seem pretty expensive for portable games, ranging between $40 to $50....how much are these games on this new device going to cost? These better not cost the same as a damned console game, because if I wanted to invest in a console, I'd buy one.
It's one cool feature that the visuals are somewhat similar to the PS3 visually. It's another when I'm paying the same price as I do a console game for a portable experience. It's absurd, and a bit shocking..especially in a state the current world economy is in, too.

The format failed horribly, they ditched it at the soonest possible opportunity. OK, let me rephrase that, I'm not exactly pleased that they don't have any form of physical software, at least from what I know of. //Also, I'll make it clear that as soon as I see a game out that I like that PSP2 only, I'll buy it. But I'm for obvious reasons keeping my PSP-3000. Well thankfully this isn't anything like the Wii or DSi, you still have your five downloads via your PSN account. Six. I have six downloads on my PSN account. Unless the PSP2 allows you to play PS3 only PSN games too, then I have seven.

I wonder how functional/ergonomic the back touchpad will be. I'll just have to wait and see!
Still, with the 3DS and this... It's gonna be pretty awesome.

For the PSP2? It does have physical media, an improved version of DS-style flashcards. Games will be available via both PSN and retail releases, they're not abandoning that market and going DD-only. Unless you mean no physical media backwards compatibility - in which case I'm honestly surprised it has any BC at all. What are you referring to? All I see on the bottom is a USB port for connectivity (and, I assume, charging) and a headport port. Looked pretty hard but there's no evidence of TV Out to me :/ The last hope were those two 'slots' on the top that are covered over, one I assume is for game cards, I have no idea what the other is. But seen as it's not on the lists of ports and stuff I've given up, I'll just have to hope they add it back in for the PSP2-2000! The back touch pad is for whatever developers feel like using it for. It's 1:1 to the main screen so I think it's mostly just going to be used to imprecise movements like climbing up vines (I this is what they used it for in the Uncharted demo) without your fingers getting in the way of the screen. I'm really not sure why people are hating so much. Varion I can understand because he's a TV-out junkie, but other than that it looks fine. It's just a prettier, stronger PSP-2000 with analog controls that (hopefully) don't suck. I'm not really hating on anything other than the lack of TV Out, though. Other than that it seems Sony are putting their effort into areas that actually matter to me (improved graphics, better control with the raised sticks, better resolution, better screen, bigger screen) instead of going the Nintendo road and throwing out last gen specs with a 3D screen you have to have your head screwed still to use properly. So all in all I'm quite pleased. I do really wish it had TV Out though!

I can't believe how much of a 'war' this will cause though. Already people are arguing! To me, it's like... they've both got games. I want to play good ones, which I'm sure they'll both offer
