So, I thought we could try to list games with a connection to ancient Greece and/or ancient Rome. It's an interesting period in our history, with a lot of interesting myths, philosophical systems etc. And games based on, or related to, this era often turn out to be very cool!
Games that immediately come to my mind is:
Knightmare - series (the MSX-version of the Maze of Galious is perhaps my favourite game of all time)
God of War - series.
Battle of Olympus, a nice adventure game for NES.
Kid Icarus...
I believe the Ys games would fit in too with their Romun Empire etc.

Don´t forget the Herakles no Eikou (Glory of Heracles) series Wow, I've never heard of these games, so now I read about them, and immediately get interrested. Is it true only one of them is to be found in english?

Exactly: the DS game was brought to USA. It´s really good, but rather short and easy; I finished it in four days However there´re several translation patchs done/ in works for the old games It's great to hear there are fan-translations. I very much want to play those games! I guess I will also order the DS game!

Golvellius is an action-rpg series that has a lot of Greek culture / elements in the overall design and artwork of the game. Stuff like classical Greek statuary and amphorae can be found in the game.

Which version do you prefer?

It's in the blood! I claim I just like the darker myths and legends, and that as a fantasy buff, most fantasy is inspired by Norse. . . but in truth i t's probably just because I'm mostly of German descent. I've got Viking in the blood, and aneed to pillage! Of course, I've got Shawnee Indian in the blood too, but we sadly know what German blood does to ethnic minorities. . . so doing drugs while singing about eagles isn't my cup of tea.

I've been thinking of playing Golvellius for many years, but for some reason I've still not bought any of the Golvellius-games. Which version do you prefer? Well there are three Golvellius games: Golvellius: Valley of Doom for the Sega Master System (which is in English and pretty easy to find) and Golvelius for MSX and Golvellius 2 (also known Neo Golvellius) for MSX. They are ALL the same game, but have different variations of graphics, completely different overworld maps and dungeons. If I had to pick one, I'd say that Golvellius 2 is the most complete and offers some "actual" storyline, whereas the first variations the story it just eluded to in the manual for the game, which is still quite humorous though as it is described through a mini-comic. Golvellius 2 "IS" in English, however it is kind of a complicated issue. In a nutshell, a group of MSX fan-translators have a psuedo-patched version of the game, but that patch I've seen corrupts the demo disk 1 (as in demo movies, cutscenes and prologue) but the actual game disk 2 works fine. There was an offical English release of the game by a company called WOOMB, but they went bankrupt and supposedly place all of their download service only game over to Project-Egg / Amusement Center. That English version MIGHT be still accessible over there, or might not, I haven't checked their English side in quite some time. Anyhow, I bought both of the games way back when WOOMB was still working and even paid the premium service to gain access to downloadable PDF copies of the translated manuals and such that would have come in the original MSX boxes. I still have these, so if you ever end up playing the games and would like to see them, PM me and I'll upload them for you to check'em out. If you like Norse Mythology, I've always really liked Odin Sphere, so I'd definitely check that one out! Good that you've already played Battle of Olympus though. I love that game. -Thomas

Two more games to the list: Rygar Altered Beast

Thanks for the info about Golvellius. Those manuals would be very cool to have a look at! I've uploaded them at Adventym if you would like to check them out: Govellius MSX ManualGovellius MSX The Roar of Golvellius - Item DescriptionGovellius 2 MSX2 ManualGovellius 2 MSX2 Resource CollectionWell there are three Golvellius games: Golvellius: Valley of Doom for the Sega Master System (which is in English and pretty easy to find) and Golvelius for MSX and Golvellius 2 (also known Neo Golvellius) for MSX. This "Golvellius 2" (Golvellius/Mauo Golvellius) you're talking about is actually for MSX2 specifically. Try to run in on a MSX1 hardware and it won't run. Well, true. But I've never had the luxury of playing the original carts / disks on real hardware...yet... I still very much want to get a nice MSX2 Turbo unit someday that has a Kanji-Rom included to play Japanese games. Golvellius alone for MSX usually runs $200+ for a complete copy. I usually use BlueMSX to run most MSX games. -Thomas

Shadow of Rome for PS2
In the game, you play a roman soldier named Agrippa that is trying to save the life of his father after he was accused of killing Caesar. Also you play as Agrippa's childhood friend Octavianus who is also helping Agrippa.
The gameplay is split between the two in which Agrippa takes part in EXTREMELY violent gladitorial battles, and Octavianus' frustrating stealth missions. The gladiatorial combat is really fun, and has plenty of objectives to complete. The stealth missions can be enjoyable, but going from being a character that cuts through opponents like ribbons and then beats them with their own limbs, to then Octi, who gets killed with one hit if the guards discover him, always takes time getting used to. Though more of the tense moments come from the Stealth sections, the battles are more enjoyable. Overall I loved it.

The one that instantly springs to mind is Titan Quest - it's a Diablo clone (definitely not as good as Diablo itself, though) that spends a large proportion of its time in Ancient Greece. Mostlty in the first chapter, but the final chapter is on Olympus. and if you get the add-on then that goes back to Greece and into the depths of the Underworld The rest takes place in ancient Egypt, Babylon and China, so it's got a nice spread of history/mythology. Of course it takes a few liberties with actual mythology, but there are many nods to familiar characters, heroes, monsters and places that are enough to keep things interesting. Additionally there are a few storytellers around that also provide background, and are interesting to listen to. Another one is Myth - History in the Making, which is a bit of a classic... A 2D platformer on the Amiga which is in Greece for a bit, along with a few other places. Oh, and for peoples' Norse fixes they should go back and play the Heimdalls

it was fun but i was completely frustrated with the historical content of it. lol example? The colosseum was not built until 71AD during the reign of Vespasian... but that was just me. the game was short too and didn't have replay value. ancient greece/rome eh? there's a Jason and the Argonauts Titan's Quest Age of Empire & Age of Empire: Rise of Rome (PC) Age of Mythology (PC) any of the gladitorial games (Gladiator, The Colosseum etc - the "you're a slave and fight your way to freedom" game)

That last sequence went on FOREVER. The unlockables didn't really seem worth the effort to go through and get golds for, outside of the Art Gallery (I'm a total sucker for those). I loved it nonetheless though.

i don't remember... i think i rented the game that's why i thought it was short.... one week rental and after it was done, i didn't feel to need to replay it.
oh, and does the Xena game for PS1 counts? there was also a Xena game for PS2 but that one was abyssmal... even i, as a fan, wouldn't touch the PS2 game with a 10 foot pole...
and 2 poorly made Xena and Hercules game based on the TV show for GBC... but given the fact that it was for GBC, you can only do so much.
there was a Xena fighting game "Talisment of Fate" for N64...
