Have you ever played the Sega CD (Mega-CD in Europe and Japan). It's a CD-based add-on system for the Genesis (Mega Drive in Europe and Japan).
It featured some good games, among many, Falcom's own Popful Mail. It was also where the legendary Lunar games originated.
The system wasn't all that popular because of several reasons, one was that it was too expensive, another one was that it didn't really have that many games, and a Genesis/Mega Drive was required in order to use it.
Anyway, why not discuss it right here?

I picked up a second hand one a few years ago to re-experience those limited but kind of fun animated FMV games. like Road Avenger and that helicopter one. I also have Silpheed which I have to say impressed me a lot.
And of course, Shining Force is a classic.

Yes. Snatcher. It was even released as PAL! Now that's what's really impressive. I have the game, but I haven't played it that much really, it didn't quite appeal to me.
The Mega-CD is similiar to the Turbo Duo as well, but I think I prefer the Mega-CD even though Duo had Ys. (Apparently YsVI was planned to get released on Mega-CD. Rumor has it that it was even in beta state before it was canned.)

I have played on it, and it was kinda cool. it had some good games, but I can't quite remember how long it was on the market, not that long as I can remember, the Saturn soon followed (i think).

ahhh...the memory... The games that I like the most on Mega CD are of course Popfu Mail, Shinning Force and Lunar. There were some that pretty good as well such as 3x3 Eyes (which I did not understand how to play it at all), Final Fight, and Vay.

Being a kid at the time (and only being allowed one system , heck I didn''t get a gameboy until the Advance came out), I missed out on a lot of great games (I had a NES until that broke and then replaced it with a SNES (then that broke) and we got a Genesis. As I've gotten older (and have money), I've tried to go back and play some of the games I missed out on. If it wasn't for the PS1 remakes of Lunar, I probably never would have gotten to play the games (and I'm glad I did, Lunar 1 is my favorite RPG of all time). Adol, Sega went and released 3 different 32-bit system (and that blunder was one of the biggest reasons SEGA is a 3rd party developer now. The SEGA-CD, 32X and Saturn (which had some major power, has anyone see the Shenmue Staurn video) were all 32-bit.

While some people say the Sega CD is a 32 bit system, that's not really the truth. It's a 16 bit system. It uses the same CPU as the Genesis, but it's faster. When you play the Sega CD, it's quite obvious that it's a 16 bit system since it looks just like the Genesis.

I certainly have not forgoten it. I got one off of ebay recently!
One of the reasons the Sega CD supposedly failed is that there were not enough good games. There are PLENTY of good games!

That's true. But the SNES, for example, had TOO many good games. Anyway, I got Time Gal in the mail yesterday, it's a FMV game, pretty bad game I guess, but it was still pretty entertaining.... For five minutes. But I mostly got it because it was cheap.

Well, I sort of have Road Avenger already. I was going to buy it from a friend, I got the box, but my friend is too lazy to find the CD, and I'm too lazy to ask him to find it (since he won't do it anyway).

The Sega CD is a great little system. I modded mine to play Mega CD games, but in retrospect it was a waste of time. There aren't many Mega CD only games that you can play without understanding Japanese.
My favorite Sega CD games...
Robo Aleste Bari Arm/ Android Assault Lunar 1 and 2 Vay Sonic CD Popful Mail Dark Wizard Snatcher Shining Force CD

If you like shoot 'em ups, you should defenitely try Silpheed. It's awesome.

Huh, I heard that game wasn't so good. I didn't really care much for the PS 2 remake of Silpheed. Is this one better?

I dunno much about the Sega CD, but the Saturn was an awesome system. :/
It was all about Virtual On and Panzer Dragoon.

i had the sega cd and it did not impress me much i thought silpheed was overrated. i liked bari-arm (called Android Assault in the USA) and Ninja Aleste the most, the Lunar games and Popful Mail were quite fun to, but in the end the system was not worth the money for me.
