It seems Groupon had a special promotion on the 28th where new users can download Ys Origin for free. Unfortunately, I only saw the offer right as the 28th was ending in Japan, so I didn't bother downloading straightaway. However, somebody reported that that the game seems to still install fine after the 28th. Moments ago, I managed to download and install the game fine. I haven't played it beyond the title screen though and I'm not sure if it's just a trial version that ends after a set amount of time. I'll probably report back after messing around some more...

Ouch, that's tough. I've been meaning to purchase Ys Origin for a while, but there are too many other games that I need to buy/play. Of course, if the game's free and there are no strings attached (that I can see) then...
Anyway, I managed to beat the first boss (I can't beleive they had *that* as the first boss, hated them in Ys 1) and I can't see any signs of the game being a trial version. I *think* the installer does check online before it installs Ys Origin, so presumably they made a mistake and forgot to prevent the installation from working.
From what I can read on the website, the game isn't meant to be installed from the 29th and onwards. I feel a tiny bit bad playing the game like this, but I hate the concept of one day offers X D

It seems in order to download, you have to sign up to Groupon, so you basically have to provide them your e-mail so that they spam you junk. I personally am feeling this is supposed to be acquired for free and fully, providing the user signed up to Groupon. Perhaps Falcom and Groupon made some deal? Eitherway, to me it doesn't seem that this was supposed to stop working by April 28th Japan Time... But who knows. *downloading it at "home" now*

Yeah, you get spammed with sent mail from Groupon. I only figured that out after helping some people download the game. Luckily it gets sent straight to my spam inbox : P

Download again! Need help? I can help via PM with a single line. Not illegal either, since you have already registered to Groupon! (In other words, their direct link.) When I did it the first time, the download failed as well, and clicking on the link they sent me on my *cough*fake*cough* e-mail just wasn't working anymore, but I made sure to save the very direct link itself on a .txt document separately on the first time, already fearing something like that could happen (and did). By the way, I wonder if this has spyware, too. I see some fishy setup file from some other company as well. Also, lots of "Y's" misspellings on the documents and such that came along. I think those would give MP83 a heart attack.

I did a scan of all the install files before installing and all my hard drive files after installing and didn't find anything dangerous. If you do a full install, I believe you get a hidden update program that runs during startup (SSS.exe by Sourcenext, the file provider). You can disable this using MSCONFIG or something.

First time posting here and just got the game through this way. Seems to work at least! I don't even know anything about Ys... Hoping to change that though!
Now then first off, how can I tell which version of the game this is? I actually tried to install the latest patch from the sticky (the latest Vista one) but then the game seemed to want me to insert a CD or something. Perhaps it doesn't work with this downloaded version? (maybe they cracked it?). The reason I actually even tried to install the patch was to try to get an old mod from a different forum that was supposed to at least translate the Config.exe menu but that didn't seem to work too well. Maybe it only supports the XP patch? Is there an updated version perhaps? Or can I find some separate FAQ that will just tell me what changes what? These things will all keep me up at night.
thank you in advance kind turbo-rpg fans

I think I am not a bad enough dude to play Ys :/ Got to Hugo's second boss (the red crab thing that spits green bubbles at you) and getting squashed. And I'm playing on Normal!

Pick "Easy"! Or install the Ys ORIGIN Extra Disc and pick "Very Easy"!
