The good ones always go young.
I wonder what caused it.

Couldn't be more bummed about this. Grandia is the game that first made me really interested in Japanese pop culture. And said interest led me to study the Japanese language, which has shaped me in ways I can't even begin to put into words. I owe this man a very great deal indeed. Thanks for everything, Mr. Miyaji. Rest in peace.

This is really sad; I enjoyed the first Grandia so much even though I had to keep my foot resting on my upturned PS1 to get through it* - and ended up taking a few days off work due to leg cramps :S *Classic "Help my PS1's knackered and I need to buy a new one" trick

That's a shame to hear the news. I really enjoyed Grandia as well. Really had the same type of feel as the "good" Lunar games to me and there was always something really intriguing about a wall of the world that no one had ever crossed before and to go on an adventure to see what was on the other side. : )
I also really liked the characters of Justin and Feena. They just really worked well together and there's was something just very charming and honest about both of them that's tough to explain. It's like they had a lot of thought put into their characters even before they were ever fully fleshed out and created.

Grandia is a classic, and one that I cannot praise enough, even though it has been years since I've played it. One of the few RPGs I've played where it really felt like you were going on "adventure", which is great because that is the whole premise behind the game to begin with--adventuring!

OMG! I loved Silpheed! The PC version has always been my favourite version... ;-;
I remember getting it back in '89. It was 20 levels of awesome playing with lots of baddies, variable weapons for your fighter and a couple fun extra bonuses if you know where to look. >__>

I just recently found Silpheed, myself. I like the comlink voices in the Sega CD version but don't like how they did way with the weapon power up system

The PS2 version I did not like very much. Something about it felt... off. Maybe it was this feel to push some kind of storyline through the game, whereas with the PC version, you get the mission objective in the game's intro and take off from there. No interruptions. Just 20 levels of fighting goodness.

I'm late in saying this (or seeing this), but this was super sad news to read. The Grandia series were one of the most fun games, that always made me go off into dorky fits of grand adventures (even 3.... kind of....). :'D So... to hear that the very person who created them is gone... I also really liked the characters of Justin and Feena. They just really worked well together and there's was something just very charming and honest about both of them that's tough to explain. It's like they had a lot of thought put into their characters even before they were ever fully fleshed out and created. Your words just reminded me and made me think back to... how... oddly, instead of Feena and Justin being the ones to catch my interest, it was actually the support characters that drew me in. I loved how each one of them was so charming enough, that they never felt like mere supports, but often even outshone the hero and heroine (making the story so much more fun!) This is really sad; I enjoyed the first Grandia so much even though I had to keep my foot resting on my upturned PS1 to get through it* - and ended up taking a few days off work due to leg cramps :S *Classic "Help my PS1's knackered and I need to buy a new one" trick X'D This was somehow very hilariously deja vu like to read! In the very last few days of my poor PS1, when I played the 1st Grandia for the last time, I ended up playing like so. Only with a bunch of books on top of it instead of me foot.

I actually preferred the second Grandia. And was a bit disappointed with the first because of it. I really liked the darker storyline and character interactions of the PS2 game; I didn't play the original until 2009, but I'd expected it to be more serious, like the second. That said, it was still a fun game, and the word "charming" pops up each and every time somebody mentions it for good reason. It is a really endearing game, with characters that'll grow on you like a fungal infection. I love (and hate) the amount of dialogue given to ALL NPCs in the Grandias. Most games give you one generic text bubble. Maybe two for the rare mayor or town elder. In Grandia you could spend over 70 hours just chatting with NPCs endlessly (as I did with 2). Sometimes I'd get annoyed because I just wanted to get on with the game, but OCD curiosity demanded I hear out what everybody had to say!

Wow that sucks! Currently playing through Grandia 1 myself, this is super shocking to hear! Loved every Grandia there was, even Xtreme! it's too bad, one of the great RPG minds of our time.
