I swear, the PSP is just getting slammed wherever I check out articles, and the two very BIG issues is the dead pixels defect and LOW, I mean LOW battery life. Just increasing the brightness of the back-lite to max will decrease max battery life by about 3 hours. That gave me about 5 hours of battery life left, according to the PSP. And I haven't even played any games yet! I would compare this dilemma to the battery life for Laptops. The battery life to Power consumption ratio is I think similar. My PSP, thankfully, did not have any dead pixels, or maybe that was because I bought a Japanese PSP? I still think that it's awesome, but I feel like I should have waited until later before buying one and popping it open..... What's your opinion?

Oh, sorry for the double-post, but i have another question for you guys to answer, do you think there is any difference between the Japanese and US version of the PSP (i.e. - Less % of dead pixels, complaints, performance, etc...)?

Japanese PSP also had it's problems with the pixels and with the square button getting stuck, because they located it too close to the screen, since they didn't alter anything for the USA version those problems still excist today in the USA version and probebly also the European version.
the battery life is pritty lousy 3 hours I mean come on, a flight from europe to my family in canada takes roughly 10 hours, so I would need to take 4 extra batteries along?

That's not what I've noticed nor heard. Know a friend who bought his PSP while he was studying in Japan. Great sound quality, impressive graphics ( much better then PS ) and a great hold-on. I've not noticed any button getting stuck nor a short battery life. But I only played it for like 10min ^^ But later on, heard music from that PSP at the Crafeteria. Came back approx 1½h later still music. Maybe the majority of players are pressing the buttons to hard? ( Good God! What will players do with the touch-screen + pen on the Nintendo DS then? )

Well, I for one think people should hold off on it until Sony can get those problems resolved. On another note, I read in an article somewhere that Sony was issued something by a court, I really forgot the specifics of what it said, but basically, they have to stop producing/selling PSP's until they can fix the high percentage of Dead Pixel defects. Anyone hear about this? *(It was posted on April 1, possibly an April joke or just coincidence it landed on that date?)

I think it's a worthy system to buy. Despite the fact that people say it's flimsy, from what I've played of it, I don't think so at all.
Then again I only played for around 15 or so minutes at my local import store.

I don't think Sony will fix any of that. Sony's stuff = bad quality.
Think about the PS2's laser, for example.

I noticed it has a built-in Wireless card. I was wondering if any of you know how to work that into the computer via USB. I was trying stuff but it didn't seem to pick up a signal (yes, i did have the WLAN switch on ). I was wondering if anyone knows how to make the computer use the PSP as a wireless card to surf the net???

My opinion : The PSP is a wonderful console. I can play like 5 hours without a problem to Ridge Racers and it's IMO more than enough => autonomy is good. Dead pixels aren't visible, and that's not the case of the DS. One dead pixel on your DS and you'll see some red pixels when playing. PSP "dead pixels" are only visible when the background is black, and they're so small it's not even easy to see them. The PSP screen has more pixels in height than the DS has pixels in width. You can put the two DS screens in the PSP screen and there are some pixels left. DS is fun, original, but it's UNIMPRESSIVE. It's just look like a normal console with a pen and a touch screen. PSP is fun and IMPRESSIVE. It has the power to make awesome graphics, high quality musics, videos (inside games). PSP will have the most awesome games. DS will have some fun games. I bought both consoles.

Haha, well put Gillian, but do you think 32 Megs in a stick would be a little small for that stuff, since we all want to take advantage of all PSP's features. For all I know, I might want to watch an MPEG movie on the PSP but it's file size is way too big. Are there any larger size sticks that will fit into the PSP instead of the dinky 32 Meg on that comes in the value pack? i wanted to make it into a Walkman as right now I'm waiting for the games to arrive in the mail. I've already taken up all the room in the stick and I have about six/seven MP3's :-(. Also, I've seen some peope surf the web on their PSP's, HOW DO YOU DO THAT? Do you need a game first or something?

Update your PSP I have a Sony 512mb memory stick I got with my digital camera, I think I'll buy a 1gb one. Try the sandisk memory stick, they're cheap and work quite well. I have some Falcom trailers, some video clips, a lot of mp3s, and my saves on it I often use my PSP as a mp3 player

I know about the one on Wipeout Pure, but is that the only place to get it? I don't want to get my system corrupted or fried for this, and by the way I own a Japanese PSP, if that changes anything. BTW, I know about the Wipeout Pure Update. But is that the only place to get the update? And since I have a Japanese PSP, will that mess anything up? ONE MORE THING, is there any other place to get that update from?

Ahah, that's a secret ! BTW, I was meaning that PSP can do much better musics and graphics coz the UMD max size is 1.8Gigabyte and DS cartdriges max size is 1Gbit=128Megabytes. Cartridges suck.

OOPS!!! Well, for all you curious fellas , here's a link for some interesting banter and argument over the PSP vs. DS thing. www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000743034952/Actually Gillian, I wouldn't consider it much of a secret now, people post it on Ebay, Forums, and what not. I heard surfing the web on the PSP is a real B--*ahem*, a real pain . I read that Sony is coming out with a keyboard for the PSP, sounds odd. Think of yourself sitting at home or somewhere near a Wireless network/router/whatever when a computer is just in the other room, LOL. I was wondering though if you can connect the PSP to a computer and have your PC access the internet through the Wireless card built in to the PSP?

And apparently, this fella does too. He put it real well too: I have played Ridge Racers, I don't find it impressive at all.

yea Sel, that was one of the first things I read in that article. As another person put it regarding the UMD issue: That makes a good argument too, but it goes back to what Nintendo did with cartridges, except to a smaller scale. However, Nintendo must have seen something wrong with cartridges, because then they switched to Small discs for the GC. Clarify me on this, what are the advantages(PERFORMANCE WISE) of playing a game on a cartridge/memory stick versus playing on a disc, does it hinder or restrict any optimal quality? Does it have to do with visual/sound quality, because if I can listen to MP3's on a memory stick with awesome sound quality(Surround MP3 format) AND watch movies off of them with some nice resolution, why couldn't SONY do that with the PSP . Taking a thought from the article, if Sony hadn't put an Optical drive on the PSP, then they would have had more room for a potentially larger and longer-lasting battery. Oh, BTW, I did find ONE dead pixel on my PSP, it's the size of a grain of sand .

Da, you may want to check your whole screen. IGN has a program up for download to your PSP that supposedly allows you to check your screen for dead pixels. Article here. If the pixel problem bugs you, there apparently IS a way of getting Sony to correct it by sending back the unit. news.com.com/Sony+answers+PSP+dead-pixel+gripes/2100-1043_3-5643393.htmlAll up to you whether you want to send it back or not. I've never sent any of my stuff back to the factory, for the simple fact that I don't really trust the mail system with my stuff.
