I was able to play with it for a bit... I think it's a neat little gadget. I will eventually buy one but probably in a few years time when it's in its 5th version or something (hahaha ,just like the ps2)

I have played Ridge Racers, I don't find it impressive at all. I found it one of the better games in the japanese release list. the grafics just blew me away for such a small device. but as the guy you quoted states, the UMD disc may be the downfall of the PSP, with the selling of movies and albums on UMD disc's. smells like a MD-disc sceme to me. but as a gaming device it's good and for watching your own movies (played some fan-sub anime on it) it's very good the subs we're readable (that was the intension of the test). but you need to have an adapter with you. so on my flights from europe to north america (one every two years) I won't be having a PSP with me. or I need to invest into extra batteries. but for my daily bus trips to school (takes 45 min) I'll place anime on it an watch that in the bus. instead of playing on my GBA now (still need to get NDS, waiting for Advance Wars DS)

Well, maybe by the time you take your next trip, a third-party will have come out with a better battery with a longer life...maybe...*ahem*. I honestly wouldn't buy any movies either, but since I got a Japanese PSP and I live in the US, would anything but movies become a problem to play, say albums and UMD music discs, are there region protection on those??? I wonder if someone will come up with something to get around the region coding, they always do . I have never played ridge racer but I do have Wipeout Pure, and I must say, it's one of the best games I've ever played. The handling is nice, and despite two courses I really hate b/c of constant turning and crashing, it's a really nice game, plus the other "extra" feature it has ^_^. Darkstalkers is a nice game with good intentions, but honestly, it is a MISSION to pull off some combos and supers. I mean, to me, trying to pull off Demitri's supers is a pain in the butt, I really don't know how fighting platform games are going to survive on the PSP. I would buy them and play them, but I would have a hella time trying to pull off some stuff in em'. Oh, and about the movies for the PSP, only MPEG 4 is supported as of now, right? I have a converter for it, but I was just wondering....=D

Cool, I hope the battery GREATLY exceeds the life of the present one, I had it die on me for the first time. Oh, as for the square button problem, never had it. I suppose it's less...ummm....what's the word.....I dunno...less spread than the Dead Pixel thing eh? The only issue I have with my PSP is inputting commands when I'm playing Darkstalker's:Chronicle Chaos Tower. The motions are "tough" for me to do sometimes, especially with Demitri's Supers. Morrigan seems to be my best bet.....

Hey, for everyone who's played Ridge Racer for PSP, have you ever experienced the dissapearance of the BGM Tracks when you play the game. I have, but it only occured when I turned off the game while listening to them in the AV Player. It's supposed to go in sleep mode and save whatever you were doing, but when I turn it back on, the BGM stops playing for the rest of the time I play, until I quit out and restart the game. This is the only game I've had this problem with, and not with Wipeout Pure or any other game.

Ive throughly played quite a few games on my cousin's PSP and all i can say is that the only thing that impresses me is the graphics capabilities on the handheld... everything else isnt what i want from a handheld. GBA still remains my most favorite handheld (DS looks promising though). The load times that PSP had literaly made me fall down and laugh (i used my sports watch to time it... and after 15 seconds I began to think there was a problem with the thing). the real gripe i have with the thing is the price. IGN has also reported that we'll probably never see that price going down. None of the games interest me either (just Ys, realy...) Wipe Out is one of the slowest racers on a handheld, imo. Ridge Racer is OK... its better than DS's but still nothing special.. quite below par compared to any Console RRs. After seeing DS's line up after E3 2005, im happy to say I made the correct choice choosing DS (Castlvania and Super Mario Bros. 4 (technicaly 5) is more than enough to warrent that) Oh yeah, im interested in FF:AC as well, but I can get that on DVD or something If any of you can afford both DS and PSP, thats awesome. I know that PSP can be a much better handheld, but Im not seeing it happen right now or, after this E3, any time soon... im interested to see how street fighter alpha turns out on it (wish it were coming to DS as well... )

I haven't had a problem with dead pixels, and I have an American PSP.
You could wait and get a later version of the PSP, but I'd advise against it. Because all new versions of the PSP have safeguards against hacking. Those could be cracked again, but the bottom line is that currently only versions 1.00 and 1.50 can run emulators. And lemme tell ya, the emulators are pretty friggin' neat.
I probably wouldn't have either a DS or a PSP if my PSP wasn't a present though. The PSP basically just has knockoff portable versions of better PS1 and PS2 titles, and the DS has a hideous library. Honestly, before Kirby Canvas Curse, I haven't seen a single game that really made me feel the gimmicky features of the DS are worthwhile. Split-screen has been a waste so far, as has the stylus on most games and the blow-microphone.
The GBA at least has a semi-strong RPG library.

Yeah, that's a good point.
My PS2 broke the day after Christmas 2003, so I never even got to play the couple games I got that year for a while. I can definitely empathize with people who worry about Sony products breaking.
Of course, I was able to mail in my PS2 to Sony HQ and they fixed it for free, so it might not be as risky as some people think.
It is overpriced though. If it comes down to around $120, I think it'll be worth the purchase, especially if they have a few better exclusive titles by then.

I want a PSP, but not right now. I agree with some of the previous posts. Fragile design, price, and more importantly killer apps. Except for a few games so far, everything that's coming out is a port of a PS2 title. Are they competing with themselves? It seems to me people are gonna be choosing between a PS2 or a PSP. Not a DS or PSP. The DS actually has games that have me excited. Trauma Center, Pheonix Wright: Ace Attourney, Trace Memory, etc...
Oh, and I also think the UMD Movie thing is a quirky fly-by-night deal. Are people really watching full-length movies on this? I'm getting neck strain just thinking about it. Oh well... I guess I'm all about presentation when it comes to movies. Hell, I don't have a surround sound set-up and HDTV for nothing. If I'm gonna watch a movie, that's sure as hell where I'm gonna do it at...my home. To each his own though.
So, to sum it up. PSP doesn't have much that's worth having at the moment. Especially not for $250. Bring it down to the $150 range and I'm there. I just got a wireless router at home, and I'd love to play something online from the crapper for something.

I bought a PSP on launch day, and once the novelty of playing games with the graphical power somewhat between the DC and PS2 wore off (it didn't take long), it started to collect dust. Now, admittedly, the DS had a much longer "dead period" where no good games were coming out for it, and really, ALL hardware has post-launch droughts or dead periods. But, after E3, where the PSP had an absolutely dismal showing, and now, many months later, it's lineup looking just as dismal... I'm a bit disillusioned. At least the DS has the GBA backwards compatability, and a ton of great GBA games came out during the DS' post-launch drought. Ah well... I even got movie ripping and homebrew working on my PSP, (1.50 firmware, 1gb mem stick), but I'm just not convinced about it. I'm still waiting for a PSP "killer app" game... I've got 8 games for it, and cannot be arsed to play any of them. Not about to sell it, because I know that games I really want will come out for it eventually... it's just proven a longer wait than I expected. So, when does Ys VI come out for it again? Hey ix, some launch games had severe uh... problems recovering from Sleep mode. I think Ridge Racer is one of them, hence the audio problems. Not sure, it was one of the launch games I didn't bother in getting. Edit - My first PSP had 5 dead pixels. I accidently upgraded it to firmware 1.51 3 days before homebrew became a reality. Ebayed it and bought a new launch unit version 1.50. This one had only 1 dead pixel. My main gripes regarding the PSP are it's assy battery life and absolutely atrocious d-pad. Seriously, the worst d-pad I've ever used. The analog nub is also insanely insensitive, and very awkwardly/painfully positioned. *sighs*

Well, I won't be quick to adopt games that force me to upgrade my firmware, however. That's really the big stumbling block right now. Crappy lineup and forced firmware upgrades (thus breaking homebrew access)? Noooope! ^_^

Yeah, that may be true for the Jp versions, but that might change with the localized games. I don't doubt that soon, Sony will start forcing firmware 2.0 changes with new games.

I don't care about firmware changes. I bought the psp to play new games, not to play emulators or other homebrew softwares.

So did I. But the PSP's existing and future library defeats that intention. Sony is treating the PSP like an unloved bastard step-child. Everytime I go to a store and see 10 PSP games sitting side-by-side with 60 UMD movies, the gamer in my cries inside, and the PSP sits collecting more dust, in the mean time.
