Hey guys, first post here. I've known about Ys since it came out...back around the time I got Final Fantasy and Ultima Exodus on the NES I played one of the earlier Ys on either the Sega Master System version or the SNES...can't remember. Anyway, I've had Ys IV for the PS for a few years, and just gave it a try and finished it. Great game! It made me think about an early copy of 'Ancient Land of Ys' I purchased about 5-6 years ago. So, I got it off the shelf and Googled it... I haven't found any information regarding this particular Ys version. This forum is the best place for Ys information that I have found, very impressive. So, I wanted to post the information about this version here to see if anyone know the rarity of it. It is the Ancient Land of Ys for the IBM/Tandy, 5.25" floppy, and distributed by Broderbund. It is still sealed in the plastic, and has a blue sticker on the plastic which says: Review Copy Not for Resale 5.25" Disk Only Retail copies contain both 5.25" and 3.5" disks. I do not see an option to upload attachments here, so I'll upload the image elsewhere and link it if needed. Does anyone have any information regarding this version of Ys? I cannot find any info online about the 'Review Copy, Not for Resale' version. Thanks for any advice/feedback guys!

Hmm, I have never heard of such copies of that game before. To my knowledge, that game was simply released for IBM/Tandy PCs with DOS on them, and also for the Apple IIgs. Also, I couldn't find relevant info in that PDF, but it was funny to read. xD ("You take control of Arick, a lowly peasant"?? XDDDD) I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures of that copy! Also, there actually is an option for you to attach pictures to this forum, but I also don't use it myself and prefer to use other sites for that. Anyway, sorry I can't be of help, but I'm as curious as you must be about this. IF you want, I can upload the PDF of the final releases of that game (both Apple IIgs and IBM PC versions shared the same manual). Oh, and lastly, when you said you played "Ys IV on the PS", did you mean "Ys IV on the PlayStation 2"? Just to be sure.

Whoops! I meant Ys VI, and yes I was referring to the PS2, not the PS1.
I took a picture of the front and back of the box. How do I attach images here at this forum? I do not see an uploader. I do not want to post it to my company's website as I prefer anonymity, and I do not have any public image hosting accounts...would be easier if I could just upload here.

Edit: Oh, I posted just a second after you, sorry! Hm. Interesting. This DOES need more research... I also wonder if that version would differ in anything when compared to its final version counterpart... I wish I could test. >_< I recommend this website: www.tinypic.com/
As for attaching pictures to your post, I... have never tried finding out how to use that feature, so I don't know how. Sorry.
I hope the site I provided above does the trick, though!

Yes, I agree. I spent an hour or two searching Google last night with various related key words, but can't find ANYTHING about it. I also researched it years ago when I purchased it with no luck. I'm thinking this might be a very rare bird, as I haven't seen evidence of it even existing. If anyone has ANY input on this version, it would be appreciated.
This was the very first Ys game released, correct? Was this format (5.25" floppy for IBM/Tandy) the first 'system' on which it was released?

The very first Ys game ever was released for a japanese computer from NEC called "PC-8801mkIIsr" in June 21st 1987. The DOS/Apple IIgs versions are a port of that, with some tiny modifications here and there, and they came 2 or so years later, but in English. (By then the English versions of Ys I for Master System and Ys Book I & II for TurboGrafx CD were either around or about to be released in English). This very first version was released on two 5h2 disks. (Let's not forget a 3rd, User Disk for keeping save files is needed in all these PC versions, though.)

Assuming it was released in 1989, then it was released after Ys I and Ys II in Japan, and also after these two were ported to the majority of the other japanese computers available on the market back then. Ys III was also first released in 1989. The PC Engine/TurboGrafx CD version also was released in 1989. I think... all 3 Ys games were already released for the Famicom (NES) by then, and the first one on the Sega Master System.
After 1989, those Ys games got ported and remade to even more systems over the years. The next entry, Ys IV, was released only in 1993 in two different platforms with tons of differences. Ys V was released... in 1995, I think. Ys VI appeared only 8 years later on the PC (later ported to PS2, PSP and japanese cellphones), in 2003. Ys SEVEN was released in 2009 in Japan for the PSP as well, and it's going to get a Chinese PC port either this year or the next year. Ys Origin is like "Ys zero" so to speak, and was released in 2006. Other spin-offs and such were released over the years as well, along with related Ys products such as light novels, manga and anime. Ys-related cameos happen to appear at times, too, in many places and forms.

Interesting find! Now I also wonder what is in the "Review Copy". Seems to be a prototype version! : )
I just checked my copy of Ancient Land of Ys for DOS and I believe it to be the retail copy from the print on the the lower left blue description details says that it contains both the 3.5 and 5.25 disks. Too bad, that mine only came with the 5.25 disks though. I don't have anything old enough to read that type of media anymore...

This whole thread makes me want to buy a 5.25 floppy drive for my computer...which reminds me...I still have the 5.25 floppy discs (and box and stuff) for Secret of Monkey Island. Although I'd also love to have Ancient Land of Ys. THAT BOX ART. Also...Malificus?!?!? HAHAHA reminds me of Demanicus.

Does anyone have any information regarding this version of Ys? I cannot find any info online about the 'Review Copy, Not for Resale' version. Thanks for any advice/feedback guys! Review copies are simply that-- distributed for review. That is the stuff things such as game review magazines would receive instead of a release copy. They can be at times identical to the release version, but frequently they aren't and some review copies of games become somewhat infamous in their own right.

In fact, it could very well be that he has the next Sonic 2 Beta -- Ys I Beta. Somehow I doubt it, but wouldn't that be cool if it was?

Very interesting information my fellow Ys'ers! Thank you for your insight and opinions.
I think I'll send it off to be graded and then put it in a hard case. Ys has always been a very intriguing game to me, and this adds to the mystique even more. I'm proud to have it in my pre-PS1 RPG collection!

It's in English thou, so the possibility of it being a based off anything other than the final Japanese release are very slim. If anything, there's probably more typos & translation errors. That said, isn't this the copy with extra lines by Dark Fact? You know, the one where he talks about the goddesses, Feena & the books of Ys.

Exactly, and that's one of the reasons to make me believe this version could have been based on some earlier version of the original Ys I, different from the final one just by a wee bit. I explained my theory here.
