Just splitting this conversation off from the other thread. The thing is, you can't tell the FM-7 and FM-77 versions apart (although it's rumored the latter has a better scrolling), because in-game they are identical. I found a ROM image of the game, but I have no idea if it's the FM-7 one or FM-77 one. Have you seen the Oh!FM-7 site before, Red? It just mentions FM sound (superior to the PC-88?) over PSG with the FM-7 plus joystick support. retropc.net/fm-7/museum/softhouse/nihonfalcom/4109.htmlretropc.net/fm-7/museum/softhouse/nihonfalcom/410901201.htmlI'm pretty sure the last time I saw a Fujitsu copy of Ys up for auction it ended quite high. I can't remember if it was the AV ver or not. Anyway, I do have these files - (FM77AV)Ys(D77).LZH (FM77AV)Ys2(D77).lzh (FM7)Ys(PSG)(D77).lzh

Oh! Yes, I have seen that website before. About the sound, the FM-7 and FM-77 versions had PSG (same for the X1 version), while the FM-77AV version sounded "more polished" (it sounds the same way it does on the PC-8801mkIIsr and PC-9801 versions). Some of the background music was changed between the FM-7/FM-77 versions and the FM-77AV version. Basically, there were 3 versions of Ys I for Fujitsu's computers, each being dedicated to a different computer series: FM-7 series, FM-77 series and FM-77AV series. I confirmed that by checking scans of a Falcom advertisement. It's easy to identify the FM-77AV version for the reasons above, but it seems to be impossible to tell the FM-7 and FM-77 versions apart (which is also why many websites just call them "FM-7/77 version"), unless if you have both releases on hand, because the floppy disk sizes are different (5" vs. 3.5"). This board's founder, Seldane (whose username right now is Mothermonster), told me on MSN back in 2006 the FM-77 version is also supposed to have better scrolling when compared to the FM-7 version, though. Anyway, I really appreciate you took time out and effort to help me out in solving this thing. That was very nice of you! Also. x__x Despite being as mad as I am, I don't think I'd try to win auctions to get these two versions of Ys I. @_@' I'll try to solve this some other way.

Haha, that was me kinda admitting that despite being after the original Ys games there's probably no way I'll buy the FM versions even though there's a lack of resources/scans for them. The PC-88 ones are just too easy to get instead. It's different with Dragon Slayer (1) - they're all hard to find complete. OK, I was under the impression there was only two versions - just one might be played on both the FM7 and 77. Thanks for the update and yeah, it's easy to tell PSG and FM music apart - the PSG soundtrack is much better than I thought it would be though!

It definitely is. On Ys II for X1 turbo, you are actually given the option to play the game on "PSG Mode" or "normal" mode. Its PSG version sounds surprisingly incredible! To play that game with PSG sound, hold the "Z" key while starting the game up.
