I have to say I wasn't impressed with Ys DS, and since Ys Strategy (which plotwise was cool, but the game...). The DS I-II looks like a really cheap rendition of Eternal with the cg thrown in...Chronicles looks much better.

Welcome to three years ago, you kinda missed the boat here. Now, was there something you actually wanted to discuss with this and your Xanadu topic or are you just thinking out loud?

I assume this is meant to be an overall Ys DS discussion thread...
To that, I have nothing new to say, though. xD All I can say is "yeah" and that, while cheap, I had my fun with the DS ports. Never went far on Ys Strategy, myself, though.

I had to say the new Xanadu style was a shock.

Yotaka, if our mighty Threadromancer can reanimate threads on a whim, there's nothing wrong with Cercia creating new ones.

I think it's the speed of all the discussion. Things are kinda quiet around here and suddenly cercia shows up, bumps a fuckton of topics (some being dead for a while), and starts making new topics. At first I was taken back by it, too.. but then I got over it. Cercia is talkative, new to the board, a bit misguided, and a little uninformed, but not a complete raging moron so it's not like the quality of the posts is abysmal.
Anyhow.. yeah, Legacy of Ys sucked hard. In the US it was the first Ys release since PS2 Napishtim but even then people should've given it a pass. Even worse in Japan where each game got a separate, full-priced release and yet sucked so hard...

Except for the, "new to the board," and, "NOT a complete raging moron," you just described me! Don't sweat it. You're not as bad as me, and my only excuse is boredom. As for LoY,*throws in 5 cents* it was my first play of Ys I&II, and I thought I'd prefer it for the normal attack function. . . but was woefully unimpressed. On a whim (mostly inspired by seeing footage of the graphics), I tried out Complete a few months ago, and while I still VASTLY prefer the Napishtim formula to the bump recipe, the games were good enough to leave installed on my HD after finishing. Previously an honor reserved only for OiF.

I always wanted to try Ys DS if only because I'm curious about it. Then again, I have Chronicles, and I'm much better off with that.

The graphics were cute for a DS game, even though they were just downgrades from the COMPLETE original sprites. However it did add in a new interesting area and a new boss, Petrorex. And look at this fucking sweet mugshot of Darm: I don't remember if that was actually ever used ingame or not, but I found it in the game's visual data and it's amazing.

... Wow. I personally stopped at Solomon Shrine in the DS games, so I don't know the answer, but... it's curious as to why they made that picture for Darm specifically! Nice job! Scariest Darm design so far, I think. XD

Yep, that shot of Darm is pretty evil for sure. I remember that being another interesting uniqueness between this port and other versions of Ys I & II. I did finish the game for DS entirely, but it was a painful journey for sure... not just for my time invested, but also for my thumb on the D-Pad. : ) Of course, one play style used the Stylus, but it wasn't very accurate and well... covers up the very enemies you are trying to fight!
But since this mode did have a hack-n-slash Adol mode, I just turned that on for the sake of having something else new to see from this port.
The extra area catches a bit of flak for not being all that well developed and changing the storyline for what Sara was doing when she gave Adol one of the books of Ys, but I still thought it was cool that it did finally give the player to explore the one region of Esteria left untouched of which I can't for the life of me remember how it's spelled... Baagu-something. I'm sure one of us here remembers the name, but in otherwords, the valley inside the mountainous crater left behind when Ys decided to go to "Paradise Falls".
It was a short, but fun little extra area with a golem boss. Not the greatest, but something new which gives people like me and Red Hairdo reason enough for playing through another port of Ys I & II.
As for Cercia reviving old threads or posting something without fully doing her research, just cut her some slack, guys. I've noticed that she posts a lot, but she's far from what I would call the definition of a "spammer" and I can tell she's very enthusiastic about the Ys series and others that Falcom has to offer as right she should be. The past few years have been great for us as Falcom fans with so many new titles and even more coming just around the corner!
One of which I hope to be Brandish Dark Revenant in English! : )

Brandish DR in English, omg don't. You have no idea how hard it is for Falcom followers in Britain.
Have some respect for yer elders, no Im not new to the board and I still love Ys despite my mistakes Schlagwerk. I have been into games and anime for over 25 years and a few bad posts ain't gonna put me off^^

I just wish that area was fleshed out more and made more than a stupid hedge maze. The boss was pretty random too. I mean, all the others at least had some kind of back story from Origins, right?

The thing that got me about the new area in Ys I DS is that I was all hoping it would add something to Sara's murder. But in the end all you did was find the letter that it otherwise just handed to you and then the game continues like nothing happened.
