In my case the game crash eves before it loads up the falcom intro. Screen goes black, jumps back to the desktop saying "1.1.0.0 stopped working" I am running win 7 ultimate x64. 8gb ram and a Radeon HD 4550 512 mb. Tried Felghana and same thing happened...
Any clues? seems hardware related since both games work fine on my Laptops. One running same OS install natively and one macbook pro running same OS install but under VMware.

lordkarnov42 try copying the yso_win folder from the extra disc over your installed yso_win folder rather than trying to run the install program from the extra disc. Thats the way I did it. Also I'm not sure if it matters but I ran the english patch as administrator.

hi i know this is too late but i solve those problem straight from the falcom translated faqs.Hopes this help. (i solve my crash problem after uninstalling codec pack i used before)
Q. (Crashing after the events of the tree of Roda, or terminated during the opening movie and the movie logo Falcom) the game does not start A. You may or BGM playback bug in movie playback. You may also notice that some, such as decoders and install FFDshow, the DVD video player of some sort, that codec is preferred, MPEG1 movie playback in the game does not work. Please try to uninstall the software related to the codec. Also, please try to copy it to system32 folder in the WINDOWS folder on the system HDD, the vorbisfile.dll and vorbis.dll and in ogg.dll RELEASE PROGRAMS folder in the folder in the folder where you installed the game.

You need to provide us more data. For instance, is your PC set into Japanese Region mode?
You'll need that to run it properly, else you get that problem, and some others. Although other things could be causing it as well.

Have you considered buying the steam version. It's hands down better.
Otherwise there are plenty of posts here with step by step instructions for installing the Japanese version and using the translation patch. I think I even made one of them just do some searching.
Oh and your seeing those characters because you locale isn't set to Japan, which isn't necessary to play the game but it might help to know what the error messages are saying.

It gets better later on, promise. Also, in my opinion, Ys Origin is incomparably many times better. I recommend you give it a chance.
