I love the Ys games and I'm wondering if there are more good japanese/asian PC gems (RPG, adventure) I should take a look at? English patch is a must (work in progress is ok) and the games should be commercially available or available for download from an official source. Any suggestions?

Well Xanadu next and zwei 2 both have english patches seemingly on the horizen. Zwei 2 is falcoms special this week and xanadu next is on play-asia. I recently bought Chantelise on steam. Ive only played a little bit of it so far so I can't fully recommend it. There are things I like about it though. I know it won't be one of my top games but for 10$ i'd say its worth it.

I was about to dive into this topic until I saw the bit about English patches; there are tons of brilliant Japanese/Asian PC games out there, but I have very little idea which ones have translation patches. :S I can offer one suggestion - keep an eye out for the Steam release of Fortune Summoners. It's a fantastic side-scrolling ARPG and more than worth anyone's time. There are a few bits about it on their forums.

I just happened upon this yesterday. It's evidently set for release. . . three months ago. Guess we'll have to keep our eyes out. (just keep 'em moist) www.rpgamer.com/news/Q3-2011/070511f.htmlAlso, Fortune Summoners looks fun!

I'm totally no expert in PC games, but.... the mention of Fortune Summoners and Chantelise made me want to jump in here and stick up Recettear (Chantelise's sequel!) too. :'D Even though I wanted to try Chantelise, I ended up picking this up first. And... while somehow, I got distracted as usual and have not finished it... I found it a pretty fun game (and so thought I'd mention it!).
I'm not sure if ye'd like it though, especially if you were searching for something Ys-like? :'D If anything, it reminds me more of Atelier games (Atelier Annie in particular! Super cute shop-sim style stuff), except with the dungeon exploration and battles being more 'action-y' and Ys-like than Atelier Annie's odd turn based battles.
...I think I just made the poor game sound very unappealing. ^ ^;;;; I should stop trying to describe stuffs. X'D

Recettear is a great game which I ofcourse already own Chantelise too. Xanadu Next and Zwei 2 has now been added to my shopping list, and Fortune Summoner and TLACoF:DO is on my radar. What about the original Zwei, has it been translated? Any of the other Falcom games, like Legend of Heroes? And no, I'm not just looking for Ys-alikes, anything that is RPG or adventure is of interest. Thanks for all input so far!

I saw a trailer for Zwei 2 that indicated it would show up on Steam, is that true?

Bought "The Lost Angelic Chronicles of Frane: Dragon's Odyssey" at GamersGate today, but can't get it to work properly on my XP 64. I can't get past the menu, which seems to suffer major lag (fading is like 1 frame pr 2 secs). It's probably the title's fault, it's so long I must upgrade my computer to make room for the actual game :S

I'm going to wait and see if the steam version ditches the securom. Its not a deal breaker at this price but I would rather not have it.
Thanks for the heads up about its release.

Cool. I didn't even know it was out yet. 'Fraid I can't really offer any advice, though. (maybe try starting the game windowed? Or lowering the resolution in the config?) But I would like to make a formal request that you share any thoughts and opinions on it once you have spent time with more than the title. I'm interested in it. . . but don't want to throw down $20 on a download-only game I know virtually nothing about. And I'm especially wary of that DRM statement on the product page. (wouldn't be surprised if that's what's causing your problem) And, Seph, if they do release it on Steam without that evil shit, please give notice!

I excitedly trotted off to take a look at the GamersGate page for it just now, after reading your post. I had nu clue this was translated and out! (I kind of also went to take a look out of curiosity what this evil DRM is, that Raison is mentioning! X'D) Aaaand.... I saw this statement. :'D Ye mentioned you are running on.... XP 64? :'D Maybe that's the reason behind this...? :'''D

Thanks for the heads up Yakra. That may be a deal breaker. My desktop is 64 bit and my lapto is a piece of crap. Hopefully that will get sorted in the steam version.

Caramba! The game name was so long I dosed off before I got to that important bit of info. A good reason to dig up the laptop then.

Seems it would indeed be wise to wait for the Steam release. I get the same behaviour on the Vista 32 laptop. It could be that GamersGate messed it up, they don't seem to have tested it alot: during install, the suggested folder name contains characters that Windows will not alow in folder names (like " : ") and both the desktop short cut and the Program Files menu entries are made up of files that do nothing. Nor is there a Config app available.

Thanks for keeping us informed. Two people over at gamersgate posted about the same problems. Was one of them you? They said they had XP SP3 but didn't state if it was x86 or x64.
Its a shame but I don't think this game is going to do very well. Its relatively unknown Uses a DRM that most gamers don't like and the only user talk about it so far suggests that it is buggy.
They are certainly not off to a great start.

No, I just posted mine. Running it in Win95 compatibility helped some, its playable except for the fading lag being very annoying (and there's a lot of fading going on!), previously there was also an issue with text not showing. A warning to those thinking this is an Ys-like game: it is not. Only similiarity seem to be the color of the hero's hair. It is more of a RPG Maker JRPG, like Aveyond and Laxius Force, only with extra trimmings like spoken dialogue, CGI movies and some interesting game play mechanics. I do like what I have seen so far though, so I hope they will manage to fix the lag thing. If they do, my remaining complaint will be the voice acting of Riel, which is gonna take a while to get used to

I love the work of Natsuki Tanihara, therefore I like the Farland series, I think Mirrormoon just did a fan translation of 'Symphony. I love Kazue's work in the Studio E-Go's family edition stuff but there's few translations. I also love Elemental Arts and Ys Typing Tutor.

TLACoF:DO (The Lost Angelic Chronicles of Frane: Dragon's Odyssey) over at GamersGate is finally fixed for 64-bit computers and can now be played lag free. Yaay! Although I still can't get past that first boss, grrr!
