I have made 2 maps of both Ys4 PCE&SNES as a side by side comparison to see witch one looks better in art and design. what do you think? Attachments:

There are things to like and dislike about both of them. I like the size and design of everything more in the pce. Like the Houses they just look better. It's like there where no good architects in the snes promolock.
However I like the texturing more in the snes version. Actually texturing probably isn't the right word for it but like the details in the roofs of the houses and the grass, bricks, and water. I also prefer the color palette of the snes. The pce looks to bright to me.

Personally I thought the SNES colors were really dull so the PCE was a welcome change but I can see how you could take the opposite approach.
As soon as you get to the Great Forest though, all bets are off as far as design goes IMO. Dawn actually has you trekking through a forest, Mask has you running along bridges suspended among the trees for... no apparent reason really. It's not like they couldn't handle a forest since they did it a couple of zones later with the Sacred District.
Speaking of zones, Dawn's maps generally led from one to the other in a relatively logical manner. Mask really felt like an old-school game where you had distinct areas that didn't really connect (we're in a treehouse maze, now we're in a crater, now we're on a plateau...) and you had to take the game's word for it that yes, there was a connection.

Its been a few years since I played MOTS. My memory was telling me that the design was awful but looking at these pics I couldn't remember why. You have reminded me. The game felt very disjunct. And the design in some areas was down right awful. I remember thinking it felt like it was about 5 years older than it actually was.

Both. Because while MotS looks "better", DoY feels "warmer". MotS feels a bit "dry".
That's the best way I can put it.

You know what ,I like to see more of a comparison between the two games so I'll tel you what I'm going to do. I'll try to map both games ( I have done some maps of each) but you have to help me with some thing in return. Right now I am mapping the PS1 game "Brave Prove" and I need someone the translate the names of the locations in the game. So, what do you say?
PS: the Ys4 games seem quicker to map than the PSX game

I don't think its that no one cares just that, like Red Hairdo, we can't help. I wish I could, and gladly would, if I had the ability. I've only just started learning Japanese and can only pronounce the kana sets so far.

Based on dictionary look up assuming I correctly identified the kanji.
1. ファング砦 Fang Fortress 2. クーリス山・火口 Kuris Mountain - Crater 3. 水晶の間 Place/room/time of Crystal 4. ホートリン Hotorin 5. セイレーンの神殿 Shrine of Salem 6. デラトラン Doratoran 7. 天竜の風穴 Windhole* of the Sky Dragon 8. リーモル Riimolu 9. 迷いの森の地下洞窟 Underground** cave in the forest of the lost*** 10. 大地の塔 Tower of the earth. * could be "cave from which cold wind blows" which is a common noun. **could also be secret. ***hesitation; bewilderment; doubt; indecision; machine translation also yields illusion.
The katakana only items don't mean anything to me. Perhaps names of fictional places or people? There is a section on RHDN for small translation help with lots of helpful people. I'm sure someone would help you out over there.

some of them sound more like a description of the place than a name. if someone like WorkingDesign did the translation would they name the places like that (a literal description) or would they change the names for localization?

Yeah I just gave dictionary definitions. That’s the best I can do. Also I’ve never played the game and have no context for any of these. Also I left the “of”s and “in”s in the translation when they aren’t always necessary. For instance “Shrine of Salem” = “Salem Shrine”. Both mean the same thing but the latter sounds better in English.
I don't think Working Designs would name them literally like that, nor do I prefer it. I believe that a natural sounding localization beats a literal translation everytime.
