Wow, Ys Seven artwork is really that bad recieved, i dint even knew, since i personally liked it. I See adol gets the worse part of the hate, when i actually liked his design the most (Close second would be Geis).
But, my favourite artwork would be that of Ys I & II Chronicles, just because Feena.
I think my favorite is Ys Vs SnK followed very closely by Ark of Napishtim. I like 7's artwork ok, but they definitely improved upon the style in Vs SnK. I'm actually not that big a fan of the artwork from before Ys Eternal, since it's a little too 90's-anime-esque. I think Eternal's is pretty good though.

Nor did I. And I have even been here for quite a while! (Despite occasional long absences. )
At least around the time it was released, everyone around here loved it. I don't think there were exceptions, even.
(The "beta" artwork so-to-speak, however, was poorly-received by almost everyone, except for Adol's "beta" portrait in-game.)
That's because, in anticipation, everybody loved it. It's only after that there are needless complaints. People frothing at the bit for Sea of Trees will probably bitch a year later about things they liked before it was out.
So the art was different from the ancient Ys'. So were the gameplay mechanics and graphical style. It was a great game, and a great looking game, with great looking art. Sure it was different: I thougth it was too long and didn't like the lack of jump. . . some others probably didn't like the lack of bump. Different isn't always bad. Especially when it's good.
He who gets screwed by tentacle monsters should see to it he does not become one.
