Noted recently (just for visual fun) that each Ys game looks like it had an elemental theme.
Ys I-II - Originally rainbow, pastoral colours (wind).
Ys III - Underground, purple, very dark.
Ys IV - Leaves in the new logo, earth, originally seemed to be more Aztec/stone theme in PC Engine one.
Ys V - Desert, sandy, fire.
Ys VI - Navigational, sunken treasure, water.
Ys Seven - I'm still working this out - could be another fire one.
Ys Origin - Stark, contemporary, looks a bit urban.
Ys Strategy - To be honest, no idea if I can theme this one.
Ys Online - Light, stars, magical.

The game? Or the logo? I don't think what you're talking about applies to I & II, nor Seven or Origins. Also I'm not so sure they're concentrating on different elements as much as different environments..... and really, I think they're just matching the environments to their real-life counterparts.

Mainly from the logo. Still can't work out the eyes in the sky (rainbow background) on the PC Engine cover!
Maybe it's Ys III should have the fire theme (lava etc.)?
