I read on Wikipedia (a totally reliable source) <--sarcasm that Chronologically speaking, the events from Ys IV occur BEFORE the events in Ys III. I'm trying to play these chronologically (minus Origins, which I intend on playing last (I have this thing where I always like to play prequels dead last (shaddap I know it's weird >.<))). So I just wanna make sure that this is true; I just beat Ys II and want to know if I should play III or IV next.
You're the experts xD

Yep, at the moment it seems to be chronologically correct order II, IV, III But we haven't heard the final words on this Ys IV thing yet. Falcom is making a Vita remake for that and it might change whole lot of stuff that is considered as canon now. Maybe even change the chronological order? I don't know, maybe that is going too far But yes, so far Ys IV events do occur before Ys III/Oath As for playing Origin last instead of playing it first. I don't think that is really strange or bad way to do it. It kinda felt awesome to see how it is connected to those events I had already played trough earlier. That is how I felt playing Origin after playing I,II,III,IV,V and VI

Wikipedia has it right this time. Their article on the Kiseki games may be so much rubbish but figuring out the correct chronology of the Ys games was within the skill of whoever wrote that entry.
Also, playing Origin later actually makes a lot of sense. There are nods to earlier games (ranging from minor to ****ing huge) and it assumes the player has a certain level of knowledge about what will happen 700 years later.

Also, I don't know if you heard this already, there are two very different versions of Ys IV (three, if you take Taito's crappy version for the Japanese PS2 into consideration): Mask of the Sun, for the SNES, and Dawn of Ys, for the PCE-CD. The former is now considered to be canon, but of course it'll change after Falcom releases their version (which, ironically, they never made - MotS was made by Tonkinhouse, and DoY was made by Hudson, both adapting differently Falcom's original script). Both versions take place between Ys II and Ys III, and I suggest you play both, if you have the time.

Hahah, an excellent suggestion, sir *tips hat* I do indeed have naught but time until May 15th, so I'll take that into deep consideration.

I have the strangest feeling that you'll really like Dawn of Ys. Well, both of them but Dawn in particular.
A little note: Dawn is generally considered the better game (CD quality music, brighter visuals, cool dungeons and map design, better writing and eight-directional movement) but it also took big liberties with the plot while Mask stuck to Falcom's script. I might suggest playing Mask first lest you get spoiled by Dawn but that's just me.

Yeah mots is kind of hard to swallow. However there are parts of dawn that are spoken only and you have to read the translation in a text document. Which isn't that bad but there is supposed to be a guy dubbing it and if he falls through burntlasagna is going to pick it up. I have faith in burntlasagna if the other guy doesnt do it.
