When I first started playing the series, Part I for the NES (before Origins was released) to me was like crap!!! Then I played Part II for the SNES (AKA Part IV Easy Type) and got into the series. Then after a while (and thanks to a friend who lent me the game) I managed to play Part VII on the PSX, then got a burned copy of the PC Version for Comparison Reasons (Although it was nice to have the Yamaha XGLite MIDI software included).
For me, its a very close tie: If you want memorable characters for a semi-Medieval era, FFIV is for you. If you want an epic story where anctient magic and Hi-Tech vehicles rule, FFVII is right up your ally.

I have to say out of Tetsuya Nomura's character design work, I like Final Fantasy VII the best. I like the anime look more. To me it looks like Nomura's characters are getting more realistic as each installment comes along. For Yoshitaka Amano's work, I have a soft spot for FF VI.

aww no way. You should see his works on final fantasy 6,7,8,10 that i have...just beautiful. They should have stuck with amano in my opinion.

I agree, if Amano had stayed on and worked on 7,8, 10 and 11 we might have had something completely different. At least they gave us FF 9 which seemed like the last old school FF. I really enjoyed that. It may never happen again with Nobuo Uematsu doing the music and Amano creating the characters. We were there for the good old days.
