Anyone else playing this gem? Definately sucked me in so far, got about 6 hours clocked in last night and is prolly the first game in a year or two I actually stayed up till the wee hours of the morning playing.

Wish I had the money, but I spent it on Magna Carta: ToB. I must say that it's nice to see a DQ game that looks like Torayama did the artwork, as opposed to just garbage. I hope you enjoy it!

Magna Carta is atrocious. Suikoden Tactics and DQ8 are amazing. Especially DQ8.

So far I have loved the soundtrack to death. If the game is that good, I'll definitely get it, I haven't played all the games in the series, but I'm not new to the series either. Thanks for the info.

I love how they swapped out the midi soundtrack from the Japanese version (and US demo) with the Symphonic Suite music played by the Tokyo Philharmonic, in the final US release of the game. Awesome stuff.

My room-mate walked in while I was playing with the phrase "What the hell is going on that needs the dramatic music".
Was amusing. I love the music set, though I'll admit I never heard the original. Glad they changed it.

Awesome stuff. Holy crap, are you kidding! You mean I have been listening to something of lesser quality than what's in the U.S. game? That's it then, I'm picking it up! I own the Dragon Quest Orchestra Complete CD Box, but it only has 1-7. I need to play this game now.

Yes, I'm serious. In Japan, there was an official OST, which had all of the music from the game done in the expected "orchestral style" midi format. Then, a few months before the game's localization was complete, Kuichi Sugiyama + Tokyo Philharmonic's Symphonic Suite came out. Essentially all of the music from the game (minus some incidental fanfares) done in true orchestral style (as was done with every Symphonic Suite before it). The US demo disc which came out in September or so, contained the same midi music from the Japanese DQ8 game. However, the final retail US version of the game had voice acting put in (Japanese lacked it entirely) and the midi songs (minus those few incidental fanfare tunes) were replaced with their Symphonic Suite equivalents. Also, the gameplay was tweaked, a bug was removed, and the menu system was entirely redone (for the worse, IMHO). Oh... load times were doubled or tripled from the original Jp version too, unfortunately. But installing the game on a PS2 HDD with HDLoader KILLS all load times, I'm happy to report.

I am eagerly watching my mailbox. A question though: how's the battle system?

Seems very typical of Dragon Quest to me.

Can you see your characters in battle this time? I thought you could from some pictures I saw.

You can see them all, yes.
Battle is still turn based and you enter in all your commands prior before anyone gets to go. Just like the older versions.

This guy is more than an idiot, he's a complete f-cking tool, if you'll pardon the expression. It's quite alright to not like the Dragon Quest series. It is, after all, a VERY conservative and very traditional RPG series with, for the most part, very dated gameplay mechanics. But his arguments are little more than pure, unadulterated, fanboyish hatorade supported by non-facts and hyperbolic drivel.
I also love his unsubstantiated and insulting generalizations.
The only point in his entire argument that, in my opinion, stands, is his calling out of reviewers for penalizing some modern RPGs with traditional gameplay concessions, such as recent RPGs with random battles and whatnot. I'm fully against the idea that ONE kind of RPG should replace another, older kind of RPG. Much like the other major game genres, there is plenty of room for variety... plenty of room for RPGs with turn based battle systems, or real time; RPGs with "screen shatter" battle transitions, and RPGs with battles that happen on the same exploration screen, etc.
Variety is the spice of life.

Man, that guy is such an idiot. I hate these guys! Hehe, you just called one of Deuce's friends an idiot (I think). I like him myself.Seldane is right, the guy is an idiot. He's an elitist jerk that has a penchant for bashing popular games solely because of the fact that it's popular. The very last line of his rant just kills any sort of credibility that he had going for his arguments presented in that "DQ hate page".

Agreed, he obviously loathes the entire franchise, and had an agenda against DQ8 before he ever even played it.

This guy is obviously a Final Fantasy fanboy, who hates Dragon Quest just because there's a competition of sorts between the two series.

That's silly. I like about half of the FF series a lot. And we've received about half of the DQ games. Things could be better, but it's still all good. Plenty of love to go around!
