So I was able to install my copy of Ys Seven today and get it working and I've been playing around with copying some of the files over from the PSP ISO of the English version of Ys Seven and overwriting specific groups of files in the Chinese PC version. I made my own ISO using a PSP-1000 with custom firmware in UMD to USB mode, and opened the ISO to see and extract the files using a program called MagicISO which is shareware for 30 days usage. As Ankc pointed out, the file libraries are very similar. Replacing the files in the directory called SCRIPTS nets having the entire game's dialogue in perfect English. As for names, they are all still in Chinese with the exceptions of character descriptions in place of their character names, such as "Burly Man" for Dogi or "Captain" for the captain or "Flower Girl" for Maya, et cetera. However, once the character's name is introduced in then becomes Chinese characters. Replacing all of the files for the folder called TEXT net one change that I saw where Dogi's name appeared for his character (Still very early in the game, might change a lot more, who knows) but breaks the game if you should ever decide to open up the books that track data from the game such as characters you meet, and monsters you defeat. I'd imagine that having the script will be good enough for most people to be able to play through it, especially if they are already familiar with the story from playing it on PSP. It would be nice to have character names and items in English though, so I'm hoping that this will get more support for folks with rom-hacking / Hex Editing experience of which I have none. Other than replacing other files and directories to see some other results, I'm going to see if Save games can be loaded from the PSP version. Here is a screenshot of the file libraries between versions. PSP on the left and PC on the right. Click for Larger Image-Thomas

OK if anyone is having problems downloading the official torrent for this here are some mediafire links. It is RARed and split into 200 MB files. Part 1Part 2Part 3Part 4Part 5Thess files only have the installer, but I don't know speak chinese to call them for activation...

that's right it is just the installer. that's what it was intended to be. You will need to buy an activation code. Apparently the OP was able to, however Kamuizero and I have been unsuccessful. I was lucky enough to buy the code from a member here.
On another note. The game is protected with securom. Surprise Surprise *extra sarcasm* editing any text in the main executable causes securom to throw a fit and stop the game from running.

Ok. So I'll have to wait a long eternity for a keygen or a longer one to XSeed release a PC port via Steam (I wanted the PC version because I don't own a PSP, and for now, I have no credit card)...
Thanks...

Since I'm not really willing to spend over $50 for essentailly a PSP game that has to be hacked into English and the $10 serial option is often rejected by retailers...
I'm on the bandwagon with Red Hairdo, Zero to Kiseki has a Cr.a.ck, Ys Seven should to, at least until XSEED decides to port it to Steam like Ys F and Ys O (which I gladly bought both, LOVE that aspect ratio fix)

I didn't know Zero PC had one. But yeah, honestly, at times like these, due to such irresponsibility from publishers(?) and/or retailers(?) or however is behind deciding adding into their games such "protections" that destroy all support or functionality of a legit game for the end users simply deserves no support. Cr.a.cking is the only way in such radical situations.

So what does that mean exactly? Not a chance in hell that we can get some other features in English unless this .exe can have the securom decrypted? I was hoping that other files that are referenced could be edited at least. -Thomas

Files that are referenced can be edited but the main executable can not. I only just barely looked at it so I'm not sure what all text is in the exe. I know system text is; not sure about items and npcs yet. It's not as easy to discern between Chinese and gibberish as it is with Japanese.
I'm also not sure how easy it is to debug a securom game. My guess is not very but we shall see.

I'm very inexperienced in c.raC-king but I was able to remove the SecuROM Product Activation from the main .exe.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to remove SecuROM CD-Key check (or preferably SecuROM entirely) so the game just crashes when running it.
SecuROM bypassing is really undocumented so I doubt I can do anymore at this point. Just thought I could throw that out there, sayin' it's possible if we had someone savvy in this stuff.

Interesting, but like you said Xalphenos, we're not sure what all is in there at this point.
I know there is some interest in cracking this game open so that some folks can play it without purchasing a CD-Key. That's certainly your choice if you want to pursue that, but if I could make a request of you all not to post how to do that in this thread. Do it over private message at least.
The game is still being sold, even if the game isn't something that can be purchased easily (yet), it is certainly cheap enough (Around $5 or $10!). A better solution would be to solve the current problem of how to order these cheap CD-keys and detail the process of how to do that.
I would just rather not see this thread get closed by a moderator over a different direction that the thread's original intent was by ankc, and others who did purchase the game and just want to turn it into English.
Thanks for your understanding in this regard.

Oh it is certainly not my intention to warez out the game. I'm going to try to get another cd key before I try any debugging as well. If I am successful in getting another key I'll definitely post instructions.

If I am successful in getting another key I'll definitely post instructions. That would be great if we could get a detailed process for how to order a CD-Key online. Oh, and just to clarify I wasn't referring to cracking the game for warez purposes when I mentioned your name earlier, just agreeing with you that we don't know what all is in there, so perhaps there may not be all that much needed to be changed in the actual .exe file itself, but rather in other referenced files. -Thomas

Oh, despite my stance on the matter, I don't think any of us would actually go as far as to eventually post in public some "warez tutorial" (xD). While the idea was being openly discussed, the in-depth "how"s would be kept private somehow (i.e. PMs, perhaps even the spam thread, or the "topsecret" hidden section, or simply through other means like other forums and/or email etc.). Forum and mainly PB rules wouldn't allow otherwise, and we're better off respecting those. xD

seldane.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=topsecretIt's less chaotic and more usable now, but it's still pretty insane and odd! Like with the Forum Games board, this one also can't be accessed by non-members, as well as whatever is in it, again like the former, doesn't show up in Google Searches, so whatever is there is supposed to be "safe" from search engines.
