From the looks of the E3 trailer the gameplay appears to be radically different from past incarnations and I'm fearing it to be a button masher. Is it really? Or have they just created a new twitch/reflex type game engine the likes of Oath and Felghana, etc?

I've never played 7. It's a little difficult to tell with that video and other videos I've watched. I've played numerous versions of I&II, Napishtam, Oath and Origin. But Celceta looks like a whole new game engine. So, I'm just a little worried they may have gotten lazy with it and turned into a button mash fest. But I'll get it regardless sooner or later. Unless I see a sort mutiny of Ys fans.
