Hello there community ^-^ I dunno if there is a thread with this question (I was lazy and I didn't look for that), but let's try to have a bit of discussion here =) In your opinion, which Ys game is the worst? And why?I haven't played all Ys games (for now, but I'm slowly~ working on that ), but until now the one I didn't like much was the Oath in Felghana game (but well, maybe I'm saying something very stupid xD I just played it for around 30 minutes, so it wasn't that much to be able to say "I really *don't like* the game". I'm gonna play it again). Well, for all Ys gamers, go ahead \o/

Mask of the Sun is the worst. I don't remember why exactly but it was the hardest for me to keep playing. Maybe because I had just played complete.

I've finished Mask of the Sun some days ago, and I considered it a bit confusing game, and it required a loooot of grind. That was meh. Also, the end was sad sad sad ;_; But in the end, it had some good thingies too. I really had fun at Illis Tower probably it was my favourite part of the game. And I loved to see Rance Village again <3 I think I just put Mask of the Sun game on the second place of the worst games because it had some common parts/soundtracks with the Dawn of Ys game, and that game was totally epic for me <3 (probably someday I will regret putting the Felghana game on the first place of worst games)

Mask of the Sun is the worst. My thoughts exactly. I found it so boring that it's the only Ys game I haven't beaten so far. Doesn't help that The Dawn of Ys is like 2 or 3 times better. Advance Communication's Ys ports were all just plain bad...

Dawn of Ys for me, followed closely by Mask of the Sun. If you're asking about "official" series entries (as in, made by Falcom), then it'd be Ys Seven.
DoY specifically, I don't get what all the fuss is about. It just strikes me as a fairly average game, one that takes after Ys I & II a bit too much for its own good (that is to say, the game doesn't seem to have a very strong "identity" of its own). Can't say I enjoyed the unskippable voice acting either, especially since that variation of the story is not very interesting to me. MotS of course has a frustrating combat system, which isn't helped by the fairly high amount of grinding. In the end, I prefer it over DoY because it feels like more of its own game, but I can definitely see why it's not well-loved. All things considered both are OK games in their own right, but nothing more than that, IMO. Memories of Celceta I find to be a much better game than either of those, but that may be an unfair comparison due to the eras they were made in.
Ys Seven, the "Dragon Warrior" story aspect is probably what annoys me most. That, and bosses feel like little more than HP tanks. Other than that, it's a really solid game, but my least favorite "official" Ys game.

Ys 5 was definitely the worst for me. Though I am looking forward to playing it again with the fan translation because it has been so long. From memory it just didn't feel like an Ys game back when I played it, it's a little slow, the graphics are dark, and the music was generally melancholy.

Mask of the Sun for the reason explained above by everyone else.
Ys V is still the black sheep of the series though. Easy bosses, forgettable music (although I blame mostly the generic SNES instruments, I happened to like a fair amount of the songs only wishing that the arrangements did them any justice), short dungeons, terrible hit detection, awful movement, stupid enemies. It's pretty enjoyable once you forget it's an Ys game at all and even then it's still an average SNES RPG.

There is so much Ys V hate here (sigh)... and I actually enjoyed the soundtrack.
Wouldn't Ys III be the black sheep of the series? I mean, sidescrolling... the series never went back to that, it followed in the footsteps of Zelda II. Ys V underwent a major overhaul, no more ramming into enemies, Adol is now able to swing his sword, block, and jump. The series has since followed the gameplay of Ys V. Ys VI basically improved upon Ys V in pretty much every way, next major overhaul was Ys Seven, introducing party system, taking away the ability to jump ect. The series has come a long way and Ys V was the first in the series to make major change.
Ys famicom could also be the black sheep of the series, that game was just plain weird, the only thing that kept me motivated to play that game was just to see how many changes Nintendo made to the game, hell, it was worth it, you even fight dark fact twice from what I remember, you fight his clone than you fight him fur realz -.-

Even if my favorite Ys game is "Ys: The Oath in Felghana", I would say the worst is "Ys III: Wanderers from Ys". They may both have a lot of commons, since the one replaced the other, but there was a huge improvement in "Ys: The Oath in Felghana", especially in the plot.
I don't understand why a lot of people didn't like "Ys IV: Mask of the Sun"? It's the best 1.5 MB game I have ever played!

I would say the worst is "Ys III: Wanderers from Ys". No wonder after beating the horrid SNES version instead a GOOD version of Ys III. I don't understand why a lot of people didn't like "Ys IV: Mask of the Sun"? It's the best 1.5 MB game I have ever played! It's the worst Ys game by a huge country mile. Hell, I don't think I've ever played a good Falcom game on the SNES/SFC save for Popful Mail, Ys V and almighty Brandish 2.

I had a lot of problems when I played it. I played the translated version, which didn't work properly on my Android device, the application couldn't read the game, none of the dialogues appeared, only black boxes, that's why I used my PSP. But I had other problems there, I've been losing my data all the time, I lost like 10 hours of progress before I manage to finish it. Save states didn't work, trying to save it was like a suicide for your progress, there was a chance of 80% for your game to freeze, I had to reset after almost every save. Even after all these problems, I enjoyed the game ^^ Also, you didn't post any valid argument. What didn't you like?

I don't understand why a lot of people didn't like "Ys IV: Mask of the Sun"? It's the best 1.5 MB game I have ever played! Lackluster graphics for a 93 snes/sfc game. Poor gameplay due to lack of diagonal movement. Zelda completely outclassed it two years earlier.

Yes, that's true, but it's 1.5 MB, graphics couldn't be better! And about movement, I had no problem to beat any boss, except the one with bellybutton.
PS: Never played any Zelda game.

The Dawn of Ys and the J.D.K. Special(s) are SO MUCH BETTER in that regard! I don't think I'll ever beat Mask of the Sun. Can't put it with words, but it feels "soulless". Soulless? Why? The plot was quite entertaining, in my opinion. It was the first time for me, after 4 Ys games, that I didn't have to beat an evil boss who was "waiting for that day to come" and has "been sealed by someone" for a long time... If you know what I mean o.o' About your game, my list of "must play games" is already full, I still got like 8 Ys games to play and at the same time I started Zenonia series a couple of days ago. Even if I start playing like 24 hours a day it would take me months to beat them all!... XP... But, I can promise to check it

Yes, that's true, but it's 1.5 MB, graphics couldn't be better! Zelda was a 1 MB game. Xak for SFC was another 1.5 MB game and it has better graphics as well. It's not about the size it's how you use it

Everyone has an opinion, and I'm not here to change your minds, it's just hard for me to believe that someone likes Ys III more than Ys IV, or better should I say dislikes Ys IV more than Ys III. There is huge "gap" between them. Yes, Ys III has better music, but is that enough? Comparing to Ys III Ys IV has a huge map and a lot more things to do. It took me 11 hours and 20 minutes to beat Ys IV, a whole week for me! In the other hand, I beat Ys III in less than 3 hours, just 3 days and that's because Galbalan was really tough. Hmmm.... Did I change your mind? No? Maybe next time

I'm just going to leave this here: You won!!! But does it really count as an Ys game? It sure has the "Ys" title, but... It's... Not... And... Hmmm... o.o?

But, I can promise to check it It's much better than any of the Ys SNES games, and also MUCH much better than that abortion of Ys IV game you're playing right now. And hey, at least it's actually a Falcom-developed game, unlike these Taito "remakes" I'm just going to leave this here: The intro is actually pretty cool.
