Finally we get a real name for Nintendo's supposedly revolutionary console. Click here to see for yourself. Or, if you're lazy... You can just click here to see the new logo.

I really don't like the name I liked Revolution. Oh well, guess I'm gonna get used to it in time, didn't like the Nintendo DS name in the beginning either but I don't have anything against it now.

Don't get me wrong. I'm sure its all well and good in Japanese. I have no idea what Wii means. It could mean Super-Robot-Metallic-Eagle-Missle-Boat-Destroyer-Best-Game-System-Ever-Chuck-Norris-Style for all know.
The funniest part, is that I can visualise some stiff in a suit 'yes-man" over at Nintendo of America didn't bother to say "umm... you might want to rethink this name because that's not what it sounds like in America"
If that name stays, I think it will tank in America.
You know Sony and Microsoft executives are ROFLOL right now at Nintendo.

Nobody's said this will be the international name. Mega Drive -> Genesis anyone?

In french, wii sounds like "oui", which means yes. This sounds dumb.

What is a name? Nothing more than a miserable little pile of secrets!

A name can detract from sales, it's just one of those things. I personally buy something, whether it has a crappy name or not, but, majority of people on earth, .......I don't know.

Oddity, they all work for me. And yes, Mighty was my lack of anything better to do =(
I suppose I have less bitterness toward Cubey in general. I enjoyed a number of it's games., but I suppose I am also easy to please. In my later years, I've learned to delight in new challenges, and I like that Nintendo's hardware provides that. I personally like the touchpads and double screens of the DS. The latter has proven to be an immensely useful feature in the DS games I've played, if it didn't actively use both screens at the same time.

Realistically, Nintendo lost me when they decided that their target market would be kids 5-13. The last game I played on a Nintendo system of any kind was Super Metroid (yeah yeah, I'm an old fart now). I played my first RPG's on my TurboDuo, Nintendo had an extreme lack there of on its systems, or at least a big enough lack of them I never caught on to anything other than Zelda(s) and Metroid(s). I bought my XBox to play good games, and unfortunately Microsoft is catering to the l337 pwnz0r FPS crowd (ugh). Hence my PS/2 *AFTER* Xbox backwardsness. My next system will be PS/3.
No Wii for me. Wrong crowd altogether.
And it still sounds stupid. But to play devil's advocate: Game Boy? Game Boy Advanced? Play Station? XBox?
They all sound dumb but we got past it. Though Wii, because of its audible sound reference of urine and fallices will always be the butt of jokes. Imagine kids saying to their parents "I'm gonna go Wii with Bobby, mom". Right, that'll work. Sounds ridiculous I know, but you're talking about a target market of 5-13 year olds.
It will affect sales in the US, UK, Canada and Austrailia for sure if they don't change the name. Revolution sounded cool and worked for what it is. Changing that is a mistake.
Something else to consider - E3 is around the corner. This might just be a publicity stunt to get people talking about their new system. Its working, if that's the case.

Hey, Xbox 360 is the worst name in video game history. Show me a 360 degree BOX! Hmm....

Never had a SNES myself. I played what little I did on a friends. My only exposure to it was Super Metroid (very cool) and a touch of Zelda 3(?) because that was the hayday of Doom and the FPS revolution in PC Gaming. During my "dry area" of console gaming.
My console history looks like this: Intellivision -> Nintendo -> Turbo Duo -> Playstation -> XBox -> Playstation 2 kinda backwards huh?
Now I'm REALLY dated.
Between Turbo Duo and Playstation I was exclusively PC gaming caught up in the tsunami of online gaming that consoles were incapable of. Last year was the first time I got back into Console gaming since my terribly disappointing XBox exposure (not the system, the extreme lack of RPG's for it).
And Wii still sounds dumb.

Wow, you definitely missed out, if you never owned a SNES... the SNES had almost as many good games as the NES did, and some of the top-tier SNES games simply KICKED THE CRAP out of anything on the NES. It wasn't until N64 that things really went sour for Nintendo... Still, I never had a Turbo Duo, so I'm not really one to talk. I know I missed out on a ton of awesome games myself... -Tom Yeah, I've considered picking one up at GameStop just to play through some of the great games I've heard on it but just haven't done it yet. I'd like to get an NES as well and play through Shining Force I and II, the two games that spun me into turn-based RPG/strat games. Loved both of those. You didn't miss too much on the Turbo Duo because it had a very short life in the US. I think I had a total of 7 games, and that was when I was big into console gaming. Dragon Slayer, Ys Book I and II, and Bomberman (hours of mindless entertainment) are about all I remember of it. Its big deal was being able to link 4 people at once to play, and I think it might have actually been 8 with 2 taps for it. I forgot to mention, I also had SNK's NeoGeo with its giant cartridges where I played hours upon hours of Samurai Showdown I and II vs my friends and I almost bought one of the Pioneer Laseractive and it was compatible with the Sega Master System. If I found one, I'd probably buy it today. Space Ace and Dragon Slayer, the 2 cartoon-based arcade games were the only real games of interest on the system. What a fun era. But yea, I agree with you about N64. That's when things got too kiddie, and Nintendo started relying too much on the Mario title. SNES had some great games, but like I said - I was too busy playing online games. That's about the first time I experimented with LAN gaming playing Doom and C&C. Good times. Edit: Found out the name, and it was compatible with Sega not Nintendo. Edit2: SNK's NeoGeo

The Duo (or TG16 for that matter) had lots of great games! Dragon's Curse, Ninja Spirit, Neutopia I & II, Dungeon Explorer I & II, Ys III (it was great no matter what anyone says), and there were more too. If you imported then it was like a dream come true! There were so many games that came out in Japan that didn't come out over here. I remember my dad bought one that literally put all the games I'd played till that time (Ys excepted) to shame! It was such a great system with such great potential. Still makes me sad to think about it... Hopefully they'll remedy their past misgivings with the Rev, er, Wii. Peace Out Jest

Ok, I've had too many freakin consoles when they start merging together like that. Come to think of it, the closest thing to an RPG I played on the NES was Zelda so I guess they lost me earlier than that LOL. Lemme *ahem* update: Intellivision -> Atari 7200 -> NES -> Sega Genesis -> Turbo Duo -> Neo Geo -> PS -> XBox -> PS2 The TurboDuo had lots of good games... that never made it here. The system itself flopped in the US because, in large part, its price. I remember that thing being ouchy on the ol bank account. Believe me, there were a lot of games I wanted to play on it. But I had the US version of it so never imported anything unfortunately. And the only place, at the time, for me to get games was the now defunct Incredible Universe. So I was kinda stuck with what they had, which wasn't much. Edit: Remembered the Atari 7200 (yes, I never had a 2600 only a 7200)

I think the Gamecube has a lot of great games, I happen to really like the Metroid Prime games, and Windwaker, and Super Mario Sunshine, and Mario Strikers, and Mario Kart Double Dash, and Paper Mario, and a lot more .. Yes they are all Nintendo games and most of them featuring Mario but I really like those games I like Nintendo's really happy worlds with bright colors and happy creatures! They definitely won me back with the GC and the DS, the N64 I can agree with lacking games, but Mario 64 is still the best game ever!
