Hey there, haven't been here for a long time. As always, I am working on a new game. It's kind of an action FPS RPG game. I have a few enemies, a map and shooting projectiles. However, I want to have melee attacks as well. (The platform is currently PC but keyboard only or gamepad only, no mouse) What are my options for melee attacks for the player and for the enemies? I could go the Ys way and have the player damage on the left side of the enemy, and the enemy damage around the center? However, there is also multiplayer support and I am slightly obsessive about making it symmetric? Not sure. Should I make melee attacks with a button press? Just touching the enemy and "rolling a dice" to see who got higher result? Something else? This is going to be a classic RPG in the sense it's going to have grinding/level ups/equipment. To get a basic idea how this game looks like: (And the view perspective)

I tried to make this melee mechanics. The issue is that the head obscures the view too much. I tried to do like when the character looks forward the head only has it's pixel frame instead of a full head. In this video it has the obscuring head: (also artistic wise I am not sure it's the best choice with the 3D sword, but I am exploring)

You can now try a very early build on your browser(the wonders of Unity). Arrow keys and A and D to move. Space bar to attack. Mouse click to skip dialog or select choice. If you get errors try playing in incognito mode as your browser might have cached some stuff: link

I need help... I am not sure how to balance an action RPG. The issue is the size of the land you can travel and how many enemies to put there. The big issue about action RPG is that you can just walk past all enemies, or maybe that's not an issue because then you won't level up?
