RGT: Random Game Thread I figured this wouldn't be a bad tradition to randomly instate, a thread to discuss old classics and games we love and loved. Today, it is The Guardian Legend, a touching tale of a lovely lady who may or may not be an android, and who is able to turn into a star ship. The Guardian Legend is an interesting mix between a straight up space shooter and a Zelda/Ys style dungeon crawl. A curious mix to say the least, yet made to work very well. There is a curious amount of implied story, as well. The game centers around a (hollow?) world called Naju, a rogue planet that I believe is on a collision course with Earth. The job of dealing with this falls upon one Alyssa. As she works her way through the ruins of Naju, one learns exactly what has been going on there. The first message is rather poignant, stating "If you are reading this, it means I have failed" (roughly speaking). Also curious is a sort of pseudo-XP system in the game, in which your life bar expands for every so many points you get. That being said: How many of you folks are familiar with this gem? Liked it? Hated it? War Stories?

I like the combo. Compile (the developer) used to make shooters and dungeon crawlers. He he, that's all I have to say because I've never really played this game.

Well, if you are interested in a rom, I'd be happy to help you out.
The Guardian Legend works pretty well on a rom, and to be frank State Saves > Passwords. And TGL has some crazy crazy passwords.

Well, if you are interested in a rom, I'd be happy to help you out. The Guardian Legend works pretty well on a rom, and to be frank State Saves > Passwords. And TGL has some crazy crazy passwords. It also had a crazy hard difficulty level as well, even for the NES days. You had to be very good and very lucky to finish this one. It was definitely one of the greatest games on the NES im my opinion. I got pretty far into it, but eventually I just couldn't take the bosses down further into the game. I eventually finished it about a year ago after years of wanting to play the game again. Peace Out Jest

It's not that hard if you use your weapons right. Some of the bosses (Blue Optomon) are vile vile bastards, but overall with the right tools and some pattern recognition, you'd be okay.
Now TLG mode...that's when you need to be crazy good.

This was a game that I rather enjoyed growing up. I remember really liking the exploration-zeldaish elements to it, but when the dungeons were pretty decently designed shooter stages, I thought it was a very original idea. The music was something also of note, hence why people like to remix the songs a lot. Wish they had made a sequel to it. I remember thinking for some reason that Sigma Star Story or was it saga? looked very similar to it, so I was excited to give it a try but I was wrong when it came to gameplay. The gameplay of TGL was similar to the inner dungeons of Blaster Master mixed with a top-head shooter.

Perhaps my recollection of Blaster Master is very flawed, but I don't recall the two having dungeons that are very similiar at all. Could you explain that a bit better?

I think that he means that when you enter into an area, the game changes from the exploration to a shooter. In Blaster Master it changed but from exploration to a close up side view I think. I believe that he refers to the fact that they both had explorative areas and smaller action areas.
If any of that makes sense, then great!

ahhh a all time classic, i picked this up when it first came out and played it through to the end when i got it, years later when the first Nes roms and emulators were showing up this is one of the first games i downloaded, This is one of Compiles best games, i wish they would make a good sequel or remake.

yea i know they are gone, but i am not sure who has the rights now, the game was produced by Irem which is still around and the usa game was bought out by Brøderbund. so someone may still have the rights tlo it, here is what wikipedia says about the game en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guardian_Legendchris

But more than just being similar in terms of it being an overhead exploration adventure, but the similarity of the style in how you would collect powerups to increase the power,speed and range of your gun as well as all the little thousands of blocks that you could shoot at in order to uncover hidden rooms, passageways and collect hidden powerups. The two were very similar in that you had to really be the "Master of Blasting Blocks" for hours. lol Or at least that's how I remember it. Maybe it wasn't that big of a deal afterall and most gamers who played the games overlooked this. -SkyeWelse
