I wonder if the characters will actually be characters now? As opposed to vehicles for combat like in FFI?

You mean if they'll release a FF3+DS Lite package? I doubt it, as Nintendo only releases first party game+console packs. GBA SP+Zelda Minish Cap, GC+Mario Kart, etc.
Edit: I just realized that that statement is not entirely true. They released GC+Tales of Symphonia in Japan and France.
Edit #2: Oh, NOW I get it-- no the DS Lite does not come with a game. Just the system, a charger and a stylus (possibly two).

Yes I just got a DS. I have Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow and Super Princess Peach. Both are highly recommended. I'm also going to get Children of Mana, Ys Strategy, Animal Crossing Wild World, New Super Mario Bros. as well as Super Mario 64. There aren't that many good RPGs on the DS yet, but there sure will be! Children of Mana was developed by Nextech, who developed some of my favorite games: Soleil/Crusader of Centy as well as Linkle Liver Story (both action RPGs). They also developed Shining Soul for GBA and Shining Tears for PS2 (also action RPGs).

Every GBA game works exactly the same on the DS, except all multi player options are gone (you can't connect the GBA connector cable to the DS), so yes -- Zelda works fine on the DS.
I have not played Metroid Prime Hunters, but from what I've heard, it should be a pretty good game. Unfortunately it seems like they've removed most of the adventure elements. If you haven't played the GBA games Metriod Fusion and Metroid Zero Mission, I highly recommend them.
Oh and there's a new Zelda game coming out for the DS this fall. It is in the same vein as Zelda The Wind Waker for Gamecube (cel shaded graphics, sailing, etc).

I'm still waiting to find out if it is indeed also coming to PS2. What makes you think that is going to happen? It's a rumor I read, I don't know how much to put into that rumor. I haven't heard anything about that in awhile, so, it's probably untrue. Though, I can wait on buying FF3 for the DS for awhile anyways. With Children of Mana, CV Portrait of Ruin, Yoshi 2, & maybe a few other titles, plus ALOT of catching up to do on plenty of games I've had for years, & I really got stop spending money, it's EEEEEEEEvil I just went down a list of stuff I just won on ebay.....ugh. I need to STOP, & pay off that damn credit card. As for Metroid, I'm going to continue to hope, that somehow, for the love of Pete, we'll see more 2D Metroids! I mean hey, I thought we'd never see another 2D Mario, & what happened? We got one! NEVER saw that one coming! Because I love Metroid, I keep an open mind, but, I don't enjoy the 3D games, like I crave the 2D ones. They're more teaser, since they have the elements, but, just don't totally work for me in that perspective. Frankly, I'm surprised they're still doing them in 1st person! They would work better in 3rd......

I can't really say if it looks better or worse.. To cute graphics..
And yes, if you haven't played Metroid: Zero Mission & Metroid: Fusion, I will personally strangle you *nods approvingly*
And yes 3D Metroid for the Loss... Bring back the good ol' 2D!! It's the way it's suppose to be played.
