I've been playing some Castleroid (or, just Castlevania) games recently and I just can't get enough of these kinds of games (2D adventure/exploring). Currently playing Super Adventure Island 2 which somewhat qualifies for the "Castleroid" name.
Know of any other games in this genre?

Depends. We talkin' just 2d side-scroller, or can you dig top-down? If you can do top-down, you might want to try Crystalis. Blaster Master has TONS of side-scrolling exploration, but it has some top down-parts as well.
Also Goonies II was a blast, Guardian Legend (again, more top-down). These are all NES games, so you should be able to "obtain" them easily.

I've been playing Blackthorne for the Super NES and it's been great fun. It's in the lines of Flashback and Out of This World, and although I guess it couldn't be made into a single map, it comes close and has lot of 2D exploration and action, thought much slower than Castlevania.

Shapeshifter for the Turbo is deffinitly what's called a Metroidvania. Mega Man ZX for DS is deffinitly in that catagory! I'm really starting to dig it! Infact, here's a list at Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metroidvania

I noticed the SNES game Demon's Crest was on the list of Metrovania games. Probably my favorite SNES game of all time. I recently replayed it, and I still love it.

Ah interesting to see that it mentions Cave Story as a Metroidvania-esque game. You ought to give Cave Story a try sometime Seldane if you enjoy exploration. It has elements of Metroid, Castlevania, Mega Man, Blaster Master and Gunstar Heroes.
Not only are there plenty of places to explore in Cave Story, but the means of how you explore them can change depending on the what you can accomplish during a playthrough and there are all sorts of hidden secrets, different weapon arsenals, various endings and even a secret final stage and final boss. It is really an amazing game.
Then of course there is also the romhack project of Super Metroid Redesign, which is simply amazing.
And yeah, Megaman ZX also has a good deal of exlploration elements to it.

The controls are simple and intuitive, and the game is VERY addicting. Just PLAY IT! It's free, so there's no excuse. agtp.romhack.net/doukutsu.html

Super Metroid RedesignThe creator spent 2 years redesigning the maps of Super Metroid in order to bring a completely new and more challenging experience. If you enjoyed Super Metroid and have a craving for more, than you might want to give this one a try. Be forwarned though, it does require some skill with wall jumping. lol Though since this game is hard as hell, there is an online F.A.Q going on here for those who are into the game. Another interesting site (In Japanese) has patches for not only the Super Metroid Redesign, but several others as well. These patches most likely work on the Super Metroid (J) series roms. And if you are interested in Cave Story, I spent some time awhile back creating a tribute website to it as well as a forum since the game is completely deserving of one. There is a link to it in my signature if you are interested in checking it out. You'll be able to find just about everything there related to the series including map and image editors for making your own levels if you want to carry the experience further. There are a great deal of extra Cave Story mods out there these days so there is plenty of extra content. Wyrdwad, if you are having some trouble getting your sound to work correctly, there are a few things you could try. I used to have this problem too when starting the game. If you are using Windows XP, you can go to your start menu and select control panel. Once there, select Sounds and Audio devices and in the Audio tab, you'll see a section for Sound Playback. Click on the Advanced button and select performance on the next window. From here, you'll be able to manually adjust your settings for Hardware Acceleration and Sample Rate Conversion Quality. You can play with these settings a bit, (I believe I lowered mine to about one step lower than the max) and start Cave Story.exe. You should be able to fix any sound issues by this method with should being the key word. : ) -SkyeWelse

I still find it utterly and completely ridiculous that they're even PLANNING on making that a retail game. Laughable.

I haven't kept up with the activity over at Variant, but last I heard, their port of it (with new added graphics and sound) to the PSP wasn't looking so hot since I last checked. Something to do with a mis-translation of "Hey can we have the rights to make Cave Story for the PSP" during talks with the game's creator Pixel. When contacted, Pixel, who doesn't understand much English at all was surprised as though he had never heard any of this news before that any rights had been given to anyone to market Cave Story for sale. But, all aside if Variant manages to release it on PSP with updated graphics and sound, I'd imagine it would be a fairly decent hit in terms of sales. It already has a great deal of internet fandom that would most likely purchase the game and one word got around to those who had never played it before via the net, they would surely read about it in magazines and word of mouth, that is if Variant did an alright job on reconstructing it so that it still manages to have the original charm. I still find it utterly and completely ridiculous that they're even PLANNING on making that a retail game. Laughable. By your comment it seems you don't like the game then. May I ask why you didn't think it was all that great? -SkyeWelse

I think it'd be better suited for the DS, plus, I don't have a PSP yet, so, DS woooo, somebody make it for the DS! It's a cool little game, I got hooked on it a couple nights ago

I haven't played the game, but I don't like the idea of porting a home made freeware game over to a console ... and charging money for it. If anything, it should be a free "homebrew" game if it should be ported to a console.

Booooo DS! PSP is the way to go, man!! Support the PSP!!! -Tom I'm more of a Sony person, even though there are things I don't like about some of Sony's policies that kept certain games from coming over, but, I love my DS, I didn't think it'd be all that great. I was a PSP all the way person, but, it's way too overpriced for me. I do have games for it, just because I think they'll be rare games, so I'll eventually get one! But, the DS has more games I want, the PSP, occasionally has a game or 2 that I want. Anyways, Cave Story is great, & I think if they totally revamped it, maybe changed proportions of the levels, characters, etc. Then it'd be cool on the DS.

If anything, it should be a free "homebrew" game if it should be ported to a console. Ah, okay. I just assumed you didn't like it or something. Actually I kind of have mixed feeling about having it ported and sold as well, even if it is revamped. I liked Cave Story for what it was, which is a very simplistic style. Perhaps that is what makes it feel so nostalgic. But after all of the confusion with "translation errors" as they call it, between Variant and Pixel I'm certainly not interested in seeing it developed and revamped by Variant anymore. The company just seems so shady. At first I was happy about the news since it seemed like Pixel had spent 5 years developing the game and now he was going to get industry fame ontop of internet freeware fame as well as monitary compensation for his time and effort. But since it seemed that Pixel had really no idea that Variant was doing what they claimed they had already got permission to do.. I dunno, just seems to downgrade Variant's reputation by quite a bit. But I guess only time will tell. Perhaps they'll actually release it for PSP and perhaps it will be great afterall. They did say that if they released it on PSP, it would contain the original version unedited which has made a lot of CS fans a bit more relieved. -SkyeWelse

In the interest of Metroidvania's, I added our own Metroid-eque project to the list, & kept having it deleted. I thought somebody was just trying to mess with me, but apparently, they thought I was vandalizing Wikipedia. Lovely. So I've been banned for a day it looks like. They apparently didn't notice that I had added other games, like Shapeshifter & Beyond Shadowgate, which were released years ago. You'd think that would give me credit, but no, I'm a vandal apparently. Sheesh, I can't exactly just show everbody our private developer message boards, so I have no proof. Heh, I should've also added the revision of Super Metroid. They probably would've called that vandalism as well. And it can't be because the game isn't released yet, beucase Portrait of Ruin is on there, but not released(which I added in a subtitle to drive the point home). I suppose I should just wait a couple years for when we can leak some pictures.....if we're too that point by then. Games take forever to make, that is, if you have a regular day job, etc. Anyways, I'm just venting. I really thought it was some guy just trying to piss me off. So we were in an editing war. Blech. As for the DS, Dawn of Sorrow is one reason to but it, Mega Man ZX is another, & I'm thinking Portrait of Ruin is another. I originally bought it for Lunar. I was disapoined. But, ended up loving it! Oh yeah, New Super Mario & Super Princess Peach. Here's what I have for PSP: Gradius Collection, Kingdom of Paradise, Legend of Heroes 1 & 2(4 & 3), Mega Man: Powered Up & Maverick Hunter X, PoPoLoCrois, & ofcoarse Ys 6. I do want Daxter, but I know that game won't be rare. $250 is just too much for me to swallow, as is $200 for the cheaper one. Heh, $250 is too much for a Wii. I have limits to how much I will usually pay for a system, no matter how much I want it. That's not to say I don't give in, but, I just don't need a PSP right now, but believe me, I will get one! Oh yes! Wow I'm offtopic *sigh*
