Let's see. My all time favorite RPG's would have to be the following in order:
1. Suikoden II - The most impressive RPG I've ever played. Period. 2. Panzer Dragoon Saga - This one is such a unique gem of story telling, music and surrealness. 3. Xenogears - One of the most intriquing and detailed rpgs I've played with an excellent storyline and solid gameplay. 4. Skies of Arcadia - A great story, characters and very unique locations to visit in an airship and one of the most solid battle systems and use of battle music ever conceived in an rpg.
Maybe I'll add some later when I can think of the correct order to rank them in.

Wow, you love Legend of Heroes 1 that much? Awesome! I had thought about putting that one up there, but, I was putting series up, rather then just 1 game. But, I do really enjoy that game alot, & I want to get thru LOH2 one of these days. I lost my save file, & haven't taken the time to get back to where I was

Yeah, it's one of those games, I'm hoping someday, somebody will make an english patch for. Though, I think there's been more interest in doing patches for the LOX games, which I'd also love!

This is hard. Well Dragon Quest is an easy choice as number one, and second place has to be Ys, but then it get's harder. I really love Phantasy Star 1 & 4 but I'm not very fond of PS3 and I have never really gotten into PS2, and I hate PSO. Come to think of it, I have not really played many RPG series - I have tried most of the Final Fantasy Games which I am not a huge fan of, but I did enjoy FF3, FF5 and FF9 quite a lot, and I'm looking forward to FF12 since Seldane has praised it so much on IRC I also enjoyed the first Lunar game on PSX but the GBA port was quite crappy and I have heard the DS game is really bad. Well I guess my Final list would be: 1. Dragon Quest 2. Ys 3. Phantasy Star 4. Final Fantasy 5. Lunar

My favourite RPGs would be:
1. Lunar I and II (for PS, PC, and Sega) - Probably one of the most underrated RPGs. Classic style with solid story and gameplay make these games golden. I beat these games three times (in Korean, English, and Japanese versions) just because they are so good. English translations were actually pretty good for these games although I did not like English voice acting. Too bad they did not release prequel for this to clarify Vile Tribe's actions or Ghaleon's origins.
2. Ys - Who can actually hate this series? I played all PC, SNES, Sega release of Ys series. And I never get tired of it!
3. Arcturus - Another not so well-known RPG. Although it was originally made by a Korean company, Falcom later gained copyright to this game. Shares battle system with Grandia. It's fun to play it until the ending, which is a bit too depressing... I kinda wished for a sequel.
4. Dark Cloud 1&2 - These games are quite good once you get used to their unique gamestyles. The battles were reasonably challenging, and I liked the unconventional way of getting stronger - instead of gaining levels by killing monsters, you have to fulfill certain conditions to gain upgrades. Great games, I would say.
My other favourite RPGs would be Grandia I and Tales of series (especially Tales of Eternia and the Abyss) but since they were mentioned already, I wanted to post other games.

Arcturus is pretty cool. I hope the translation will be finished someday.

Um... I think most of you know how much I hate strategy RPG aka button smashing RPG but... I did enjoy Golden Sun and Golden Sun: Lost Age for GBA and Dragon Warrior 1, 2, 3 (the same game as Dragon Quest but they decided to use diff name for GBA)
Other then that... Ys! lol
GS and Dragon Warrior had an interesting enough storyline that pulled me in.

The new Lunar is quite crappy, though the music is great! The series needs to come back, with something good! A series I can rate, as one of my favorites, but only has 2 really good games, that must say something! That there's potential for more, but no more have come out. I haven't played Magical School Lunar yet, it's probably better then Lunar Dragon Song. Sheesh, I even bought the DS for Dragon Song I need to finish it someday, just to get it over with.

I agree that Ys cannot be called an RPG, but people's got such messed up opinions about what an RPG is that I even call Super Mario Bros. an RPG these days (although ironically). Mario is pretty much as much of an RPG as Zelda is.

I do put Ys down as an RPG.
In my view, story-games where there is clear character development (I don't mean story-wise, I mean stats-wise, but both are important!) are what make RPGs. There's already a huge gulf in style between strategy RPGs, such as Shining Force and Vandal Hearts, and turn-based RPGs, such as Grandia or Suikoden... And then there's in-betweens, like the awesome Baldur's Gate series. But these are all RPGs, and I think it's because of the elements I highlighted above.
As such, Ys does make the cut, but it's where Zelda fails. Without the character advancement through experience, it is simply an adventure game (with the exception of Zelda 2, and maybe more recent ones, which I haven't played). Ys is a mix between those styles - an Adventure RPG.
To be fair, "genres" don't exist - it's just a rainbow of styles of game.
Back on topic, my favourite RPGs (>_>) are:
Shining Force II and III ShF II was my first ever computer RPG, and I've loved comp RPGs ever since. The battles are so simplistic, but that isn't at all a bad thing. Not to mention, ShF III is one of the most innovative games around with the Synchronicity system, and with an incredibly well-detailed, well-thouht out and thoroughly interesting plot! The best I've ever had the joy to play through. Non Force games, particularly Shining the Holy Ark, are also on occasion spectacular.
Ys Everyone knows why Ys is awesome. I don't need to take you there.
Langrisser Like ShF, but with some differences that I really enjoy. Replayability is huge what with alternative promotion routes, and picking the correct troops and items for each battle is good fun. Not mention, again, some great storylines. And, like ShF III, it's a shame most of them haven't been translated 8(
Fallout The humour in these games is awesome. And there's nothing like standing behind some unsuspecting thug, setting your gun to "burst", and watching his body spray out all over the street ^_^
Panzer Dragoon Saga A masterpiece. For those who know about it, there's no need for me to say anything. For those who don't, I'm not entirely sure I can do it justice.
Might and Magic / Heroes of M&M Great games. M&M is more RPG, HM&M more strat game, but they're good to play.
Others I've always really enjoyed the Elder Scrolls series, particularly Daggerfall. I've played through Baldur's Gate II a lot because that's cool as well. Grandia, Lunar SSS, Vay and a couple of similar games deserve honorable mention, although I don't play them too much because I'm not a fan of random-encounters. Frankly, they piss me off. Knights of the Old Republic and its sequel are also both great games.

Why are you calling Shining Force computer RPGs? They're widely known as strategy RPGs although I just refer to them as strategy games as I don't think they can be placed in the RPG genre.

You're correct Deuce. But, as with any person, I could call Pitfall a Suspense Thriller, & that's what would I call it(I don't, but, just using it as an example). I've never considered the Castleroids RPG's, for me, they just aren't. But, Cadash, to me, is. As is Ys, & Zelda. But, it's less about the words Role Playing, & more about the type of adventuring, without calling them adventure games. Like, Tomb Raider, to me, THOSE are adventure games. But, Ys, Neutopia & Zelda, those are action/RPG's to me. That's just the way it works in my mind. Now, if someone wants to call SotN an action/rpg, so be it, that's there choice. I don't agree, but at the same time, I can see there are elements that would lead a person to call it that, & that's up to them. I call an action/rpg, an rpg, because I see similar elements in them, that I see in turn based rpg's. Frankly, Ys is one of the main reasons, I'm into any kind of rpg in the first place, so there has to be some merit to that! Cosmic Fantasy 2 was my first RPG really, & it openend my horizons, but, it also made me want to play Ys, which made me want to play, etc., etc.

Seldane: I guess I wasn't very clear :s when I said computer RPG, I just meant that it was on a computer/console, and not a tabletop RPG.
The point is, RPGs on the comp and tabletop RPGs are very different, partly because of the limitations of computers. Whereas in a tabletop RPG you can do absolutely anything, a programmer can obviously only put in a few of a range of scenarios in any game. It certainly couldn't cope with all the potential choices that a player coule make.
This is just what Deuce said, so I agree with you in that. Perhaps RPGs cannot really exist on computers. Maybe the term arrived for computer games with the original incarnations of some D&D games, like Pools of Radiance, and the term RPG came across that way. I dunno about that, that's just a guess. But I do know that many games try and ascribe RPG elements into the gameplay, even if they don't have the scope a real RPG could have.
But the term is here, and even though they might not be actual RPGs per se, the term is used to describe these games. And it does a good job of distinguishing one type of game from another!
Oh dear, maybe it doesn't >_> lol
There are certain games/styles of game which are traditionally classed as "RPGs". I do draw a line somewhere, but I'm usually happy to go with that. But, like PD and wyrdwad, I agree that most games don't fall into one category, and they're all a mix. "Genres" don't exist :S
