It is a very mediocre dungeon crawler with hideous graphics but a pretty nice soundtrack. No battery backup, just password save. It is not like Ys and it is not like Zelda. This is not an RPG. It is an overhead action game, kind of like Pocky & Rocky or something. Kind of. I'd say this game isn't worth the trouble. If you want to try it, I'd advice just downloading it somewhere. Pretty, eh? Here's a review: Click!

Dugeon Explorer plays just like Gauntlet and its not a bad game by no means. It was one of first action/rpgs to have 5 players at the same time. This was beefy stuff for 1989. The sequel came out for Turbo Duo Super CD and supported an even better soundtrack and longer journey.

I love Dungeon Explorer 1 & 2, especially the music in part 2. I only have part 2 right now, and have been wanting to play the first one again. I have great memories of playing it when it first came out.

Yes, the music in part 2 is your typical awesome pcengine hard rock soundtrack. Actually most of the tracks from part 2 are just rehashes from the original Dungeon Explorer which has very good chip music as well. The game is really meant to be played multiplayer with a group of friends in one room.

Dungeon Explorer rocks! And there must be a reason why it got game of the year, in I think VG & CE magazine back then! Great game, but not as good as the 2nd one. It plays like Guantlet, but with a connected world & a story, & is really fun to play for me anyways

So many different opinions. I may try it. I hope they (nintendo) will put many others pc-engine games (like neutopia...), coz here in France that system was not well available at that time.

Virtual Console games are not region free, an American Wii cannot download foreign games from Europe and Japan.
I'm so glad I have a modded XBOX for emulation. I do love how the Wii plays Gamecube games, thats going to sell me.

So many different opinions. Remember that those who liked it played it back when it was new and sure, it may have been enjoyable back then, but it just doesn't do it today. It doesn't compare to later games, not at all.

Oh man I LOVED this game! The sequel was even better, particularly because of improved gameplay and a really good story, but the real fun was using ridiculous cheat codes and wreaking absolute havoc in the first one. I did beat both without cheating if memory serves though... That screenshot posted earlier is giving me a massive flashback to... oh my, frickin' elementary school, and I'm approaching my 30s!

I know how you feel. TG16 was practically my parents back in the early 90's. Dungeon explorer was such a great experience to play with a group of friends. 5 players at the same time was a BIG deal back then but now the multiplayer aspect is just ridiculously huge with online gaming.

MEDIOCRE? ?? AHHHH but that's your opinion and that's just fine my story is different. my granny was a hardcore gamer 15 years ago and bought the turbo grafx and I think she still has upwards of 30 different hu-cards. many, MANY days were spent playing games like Bomberman, neutopia 1 and 2, crater maze, bonk's adventure, but the MOST fun we've had was late night Dungeon Explorer romps. It all too frequently ended with either one of us accidentally hitting START+RUN at the same time... and you know the deal let's just say that you don't feel like plowing through the same dungeon again when it's 4am. I'm pretty sure Dungeon Explorer let us save to the Turbo uhhmmm memory attachment thingy. Either way I remember the passwords being like 10 characters at most. Wasn't one of them JEBDA JEBDA to let you play the final boss? Another one let you play as a princess character.... ohhh my head.

DEBDE DEBDA I'll never forget that code! It power's you up all the way, making you super fast, & you can warp to anywhere, by going into the bushes in front of the castle, & can walk thru walls

MEDIOCRE? ?? AHHHH but that's your opinion and that's just fine Well, see - it's just what I said. You grew up with it and have an emotional bond to this game. That changes everything. If your first time playing it would be today (like in blabla76's case), I'm pretty sure you'd find it mediocre as well. Nostalgia has a huge part of whether you like something or not. I grew up with Ys and if I had discovered it today, I'm sure I wouldn't have gotten passionate about it as I am today. Heck, I might not even have cared about it in the first place.

I agree, and I add: Of course you would care about Ys You might not had made a forum about it. Perhaps " Ancient Land of Zelda"

Quite frankly, Keranu is a great example, of someone, who didn't grow up with most Turbo games, but absolutely loves them now, despite not having any emotinal attatchment to them.
