I recently played an old arcade game for the first time called The Tower of Druaga. It was quite fun. It's one of those games where you have to give it a chance but I thought it was quite interesting. Has anyone here played it? It's like the Contra of action-RPGs. It's simple, yet extremely hard to beat. It's quite popular in Japan and is considered to be a classic there. If you have anything to say about this game, do that post thing. Just please don't laugh at me. Well, okay. You can giggle a little.

Loved Baten Kaitos, hated the Druaga homage they threw into it. It was very... jarring?
But then, I never did play the original Tower of Druaga. Didn't they do a remake of it not all that long ago?

Is this the game with the mazes and jellies and find a key, open a door, find a key, open a door, find a key, open a door...?
god that game sucks
if this game was popular in japan, it must have been the jelly monsters. The japanese seriously have a thing for jelly inspired monsters...

The Japanese must have a thing for crappy games, Hydlide is another example (wait, didn't Arjak make a thread about that series as well?) Sorry for bashing all your favorite games.

No offense taken, Seldane! To be honest, I don't like Hydlide (the original, anyway). But I do like this game. But to be honest. I opened this thread with a smirk on my face. I know that Druaga is not very well liked, here. And I was actually prepared for a little teasing, as you can see by the title of this thread.
But, yeah. The game IS rediculously hard. I heard that near the end of the game (there are 60 levels), if you don't get this one item, you will be zapped all the way back to Level 1.
This led me to a silly idea for a movie.
In the movie, a warlock plays the game, and forgets to get this item. When he is warped back to Level 1, he dies of a heartattack. With his last breath, he puts a curse on the arcade machine. Years later, a young american game master competes in a Tower of Druaga tournament in Japan. Guess which cabinet he uses...
The kid wins the tournament, but when he beats the game, the curse activates and the REAL Druaga (a demon from some old religeon whose name I forget) zaps the kid into the game world where he must climb the tower and defeat him if he is to escape.

Hey, Super Hydlide was pretty kickin', Seldane. >=[ I wouldn't know. I have only played some computer games as well as Hydlide Special for NES. Those games were not funny. By the way, other examples for similiar popular games in Japan: Dragon Slayer 1, Xanadu and Romancia. Scary stuff. Edit: I know Arjak likes DS1 too. I see a connection here.

I've played the ToD version of Tower of Druaga. =P basically the original game inserted into a PSX game with the tales sprites overlayed the originals.
And I was horrible at it. *LOL* I only got as far as the sixth floor. And that was on my best night. Nice mindless killing-running game.

My personal best is around Floor 10-12, but that doesn't make those f***ing wizard enemies any easier to deal with. God, hate those wizards.
Anyway, you should go to YouTube and search for Tower of Druaga. There is a video of someone beating this game WITHOUT LOSING A LIFE. I kid you not. Some people apparently have too much free time if they are this good at that game. You can also find the original Promotional Video for it.
There is also a good article for it at StrategyWiki. Shows you how to get all the Treasure Chests and which ones are good, bad, and completely essential.

Besides, my gaming tastes could be worse. You don't see me yakking about how I love Takeshi's Chalenge for the Famicom!
For the uninformed: Takeshi's Chalenge is a game made by famous Japanese comedian Takeshi Kitano who made this game so bad ON PURPOSE that I wouldn't be surprised if anyone who was stupid enough to buy this game prayed to God to damn him to hell. The game actually even WARNS you that it was made by someone who hates video games! The game consists of several chalenges (hence the title) where you must complete such inane tasks as leave the game on without pressing any buttons for an hour, killing a boss by hitting him 20,000 times, holding a button down for four hours non-stop, and all kinds of other masochistic stuff.
And yes, I got all that info from my latest issue of Game Informer.
I pity anyone who actually bought this game...
I haven't even played it and I STILL hate it!

The Original Famicom model was quite different from the original NES model. On the Famicom, the controllers were hard-wired in and only the Player 1 controls had the start and select buttons. The Player 2 controller had a microphone instead.
Trivia: In the manual for the original Legend of Zelda, it says that the enemy Pols Voice (looks like a severed rabbit head) hates loud noise. This is actually a reference to the Japanese version, where making a loud noise into the microphone would kill all of the Pols Voices on the screen!

...Blimey. I used to wonder about that, when I was a lad. I ended up figuring it was just a euphamism for putting an arrow through their ears.

Wow, I didn't know you sung Karaoke in the game!
If you care, a translation patch has just been released for Tower of Druaga for the PCE. You can get it at Romhacking.net! If you care, that is.

A couple days ago, I recieved a shipment from Amazon of two PS2 games that I ordered. God of War, and Nightmare of Druaga. It's funny, I read as many reviews for Nightmare as I could find, and they were either full of high praise, or disgust. IMO, Nightmare is arguably the best Druaga game so far in terms of playability, fun, and enjoyment (I heard it didn't sell very well in Japan; go figure. ). It plays very similar to NetHack, and I have found it to be quite enjoyable. If you are ever going to give the series a chance, this is probably your best bet.
