The convenience in FFXII is that you don't have to do much. Just sit back and enjoy. That's why I like PS2 RPGs. They often feature more cutscenes than actual gameplay. I really like it.

yup, sarcasm. so-called "gaming"
Let us figure out what's going on ourselves and let us do all the battling, dammit. This is a game after all... or at least interactive media. But no, the industry's future is apparently to make emotional artistic media comparable with the greatest films. Too bad most developers don't know how to put emotion into games without lengthy cutscenes. These are films, and not even interactive films because when you see your character do something you should be doing, it's not a game anymore it's a movie. If I want to watch a film, I'll just watch a film.
In recent memory, I'd say RE4 has had the best use of cutscenes in a game. They're short, spread out, and almost all action is interactive.

Actually I wasn't sarcastic for once. I actually LIKE FFXII. A lot! In many cases, I think that the less gameplay there is, the better (it's like watching a movie or something, really convenient). I loved every minute of FFXII (kinda, I got tired of it after about 35 hours, but I never play through games so it isn't uncommon). I don't like fast and stressful games like fighting games and action and stuff (with the exception of fps games when I am in the mood). FFXII is a great, calm game to play. Rules.

I never said you were being sarcastic, I was just confirming that I was sarcastic.
And why are you even gaming? Why not just stick to movies? I've been saying it for years, Square-Enix should be making CG anime shows or something. It suits them better, and I would actually check out Final Fantasy that way. The reason I don't play FF anymore is actually because of the gameplay... it's like boring repetitive filler in between the real parts of the game. Well, that's the reason I won't play FFVIII, the other games are unappealing to me story and character-wise as well as in gameplay.

Movies don't feature the typical crappy japanese stories that most rpgs do. They feature typical american stories instead, and they are usually even cheesier. And I have to stand looking at bad actors. And I really like the gameplay in FFXII. The best battle system in any turn-based rpg no contest.

And I really like the gameplay in FFXII. The best battle system in any turn-based rpg no contest. I wouldn't say no contest, but it's up there. Grandia 2's still is my favorite, I think, but FF12 is a lot of fun in combat! In recent memory, I'd say RE4 has had the best use of cutscenes in a game. They're short, spread out, and almost all action is interactive. NO, NO, NO! No more QTEs where you die if you screw up! That shit ruins games. It's not clever, exciting interesting. Cutscene or gameplay. Not both. I love everything else about RE4... but those suck, and they suck in everything else they're shoehorned into.

well i still found it better than just watching. and the dying never bugged me. in fact, I don't remember ever dying in a cutscene... oh wait, there was that Mendez fight, but I saved right before that anyways (anyone could tell there was a boss fight coming). I think it's pretty cool a realistic, and it adds to the fear and tension of the game (which was much needed because otherwise there really wasn't much in the game that was scary). Games need more one hit kill scenarios these days anyways. Not enough death pits and spiked floors these days. Anyways, I was talking more about the pacing and length of the cutscenes in the game.
but I do hate stuff like that while battling. like in God of War and Zelda TP. It RUINED the final boss fight in TP (I'm guessing FM just loved it, though. Press A to win. best game ever, am I right? Press play to watch film.).

The game had plenty of tension. Most of the enemies could match speed with you for once, and I found that to be far more interesting than the usual RE without cutscene gimmicks. I'm not sure why you seem to dislike cutscenes you can't control so much... do you get mad when you have to take your foot off of the gas pedal when you're driving?
But yeah, I'll agree that they're generally well-directed and exciting cutscenes, which goes a long way at balancing out the (par for the course) poor acting. But I don't think I'd want RE any other way.

it's not about being able to control them or not, it's having to see something in the cut scene that you could have done yourself, like have a sword fight with another character. Another example is the intro to FFVIII, which is awesomely directed, but you could have fought that battle yourself. The only problem there is that actual battling in that game one-on-one with another character is nowhere near as exciting as just watching a movie of a battle. What I have against cutscenes in games over all is that they seem to take over some games, making them feel less like game. They can be great for moving things along in the story, but please let the gamer do all the fun stuff! It's a game after all, and don't make them take too long or show up every other second because it breaks the pace of the game.
And the only tension I had while fighting regular enemies was during the Mercenaries mode. Other than that, a few of the bosses were also pretty tense, especially Verdugo. That was the best part of the game for me, i ended up eventually running through and skipping that freak. just the idea of not knowing where he'll show up next is enough. I was going to get him in my 2nd play through but didn't get that far before moving on to another game. Besides that, the game was no different from a simple action game for me. Funny thing is Metroid Prime is considered an Action game but I found it more horrific than RE4 over all, because there were things like the Verdugo fight in RE4 through out MP. I cant compare RE4 to other REs though, RE4 is my first RE.
Also, I don't drive. But I imagine it's not comparable. Driving is something I don't want to do, the less I have to control the better. I just want to get safely to my destination without stress. Games... I want to play those, not watch them. Cutscenes should be rewards, not replacements for the game.

In regard to FFXII, I think it's dull if you play in wait mode and let the gambits work as well. There's no pressure and you can leisurely pick commands while your other party members do whatever they please. However, if you play in active mode and are forced to issue commands and access your own menus in realtime, it adds a sense of urgency that combat didn't have otherwise. I couldn't believe how much it changed the game.

MASS EFFECT! WOOT!
Dear gods, I thought this game was going to be an overhyped pile of bollocks.
Dear...lord...It's pretty overwhelming, what you can do and all, but so far, I am enjoying this game. I have rarely been so intent on hearing every line of dialog than I have with this game. Awesome, mature RPG.

I usually like cutscenes, when I feel immersed in a good story. I'm not there yet in FFXII, so seeing so many at the beginning irks me. Maybe by the end, I'll be dying for more, but I sat down wanting to play, but couldn't. I was asking myself, "Do I want to skip these scenes? I won't know what's going on, but at least I'll be playing the game!" Alas, my desire to become immersed in a story usually wins out over wanting to run around killing things.
I played Xenosaga I (I still need to play the other 2), and only one thing bugged me about the amount of cutscenes there: trying to get a quick hour of playing in before class. 40 minutes into it, I activate a cutscene that goes for over half an hour, and I have to stop it (and start from my last save later) or miss class. They did a decent job of letting you save before and after, but I really think it should've warned me about the longer ones. Telling me the exact length of the upcoming 45-minute cutscene is a small thing for them to do, but it would make a huge difference to me.

Random Gameplay Update: Final Fantasy IV Advance: ...about to go kick Zeromus' ass. Then it's off to the bonus dungeon! Baten Kaitos: ...uh.. I said I was gonna play this before, didn't I? Whoops.. ^^; Final Fantasy VI Advance: Got this instead and proceeded to cram it into my GBA. Presently chasing down Terra, having finished watching Locke go all emo over his dead girlfriend. Loving the new translation. Final Fantasy III: Got a DS for Christmas, so I had to get this. It's so cute!!! XD I'm officially on a Final Fantasy kick, it seems.

Hey I got a DS and FF III for Christmas! I had been playing the NES FF III. Now it will have to wait. A friend bought me the DS Milon game too, but it hasn't arrived yet. I really can't wait for that. So now my current playing list is DS FF III and Soldner-X.

Yeah, unfortunately it's only a puzzle game, but it still looks like fun. Plus Milon games = awesome music. Here is the site for it: Milon.jp

Stop spreading your lies! >:O It's fun to play in Wait mode. :E Well, actually, I switched in and out of it depending on the enemies I was fighting. If I was attempting to beat up a tough boss, I typically switch over to Wait mode so I can spend some time choosing my next course of action. ^^

PC Crysis (awesome grafficks and gameplay, and the AI is sick!!!) FEAR (this game has better action than any other FPS!) Another World 15th Anniversary (I nearly smashed my keyboard) I got a Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer sound card for x-mas.... playing FEAR with EAX Extreme HD is way cooler than EAX 2.0. Great game! Crysis is phucking awesome too. I should've installed it sooner. I thought it wouldn't run well on my setup but I was wrong. Underrated game! Get it today! Keep far, far away from Another World... I don't even know why I downloaded it. I have always hated that game. The setting is really cool and so are the grafficks, but it suffers from some of the worst gameplay ever. I HATE trial and error! Super frustrating game and not much of an improvement (graphically) from the original. Beware. SNES Paladin's Quest (easier than I thought, neat) Milon (I smashed my SNES because of an impossible boss) Magical Pop'n (damn hard game, but a pretty nice one) I'm regularly playing Milon and Magical Pop'n, but I've been playing them unusually much now around the holidays. I started playing Paladin's Quest a few days ago. Very typical classic RPG with a cool soundtrack. I like it.

Culpa Innata. I've loved PC adventure games since I first played King's Quest V, so I'm glad to see they're not dying. I just wish they could live up to my expectations. This one's pretty much all dialog trees. There's no adventure in this adventure game. For some reason, though, I'm determined to finish it. I'm a good deal of the through it already.

Currently playing Baten Kaitos Origins. Bought the used one few days ago. It's your fault that I got interested in this game, wyrdwad and Lumineux . It's been good three years since I played the first game so I was surprisd at how much the battle sysem changed. It's faster and more enjoyable so I am happy.

Yep, Guillo's pretty awesome. With the introduction of Milly, I can see where this character relationship is going...
