For the sword leveling, you need to go to the Blacksmith in Redmont (he's in the same shop you buy items/weapons) and give him the necessary crystals and money to level up your equipment.
The double jump is only usable when you have the item that allows you to double jump.

it seemed like you get the double jump right when you get the ancient tablet in the abandoned mine, i thought that was the item that gave it to you.

actually i think you just talk to everyone mainly the mayor and the church as well as Elena (it is usually only those people you truly need to talk to in the town) and the event will unlock. when you go down to the cave their will be a few people in front of the door. by the way once you have double jump if you are having a hard time leveling up to beat the boss you can skip this stage and go to the Elderm mountains and fight the enemies there, they give tons of experience and gold and Ravels. it will save alot of time building experience though they are alittle tougher. if you are about to die quickly pause and use the wing to transport back to the nearest save point. this way you will not die and you will not have to rebuild up your expeience because you did not save and got killed. I had to use that alot in the last stage

hi just out of curiousity, there is a possibility that you are not supposed to be there yet. just because you beat the Tigray Quarry does not mean you can get into the Abandoned Mine. i assumed you were at that part already, the abandoned mine will not open to you get to that point. have you beat all the Illbern Ruins and lava pit? the Abandoned Mine is the next stage you go to after that if you have not completed the stages yet you will not be able to get there yet.

i think i know what you are talking about on the walls in the background you will notice lamps that are lit with fire, there will be 1 that is unlit shoot your fireball magic at it and it will light it up . when it is lit it will raise a platform so you can get past the wall. there are a few parts in the game that require you to do this.
