We all know that Dark Fact's name has about a bajillion translations but I don't know if Falcom ever translated his name before Ys Eternal (Dalk Fukt, was it?) and that Romn sure is a funny word and Reah's name was once Lair .... so ... yeah, the question in the subject. :P
Do you stick with official translations? Translations that "sound good"? Stick with the first translation you see?
With me, I'm mix and match! XD I try to stick with official stuff but there are instances where I'll go with other translations mainly cuz the official ones are too Engrish for me. ^^;

I always (or usually) use the official names. I never use third-party ones though, like Lair or Demanicus.
I also never make up my own names like Leah or Sarah.

You know, after playing I/II on the TG as a child, I didn't play any other Ys game until recently. So, for me, those (the TG versions) are the names that stick with me. That is, I always think of Reah as Lair until I correct myself.
Because of the number of different translations, I find it difficult to know what exactly is official. How do we know what is an official translation of a name? (All you experts out there, please forgive my question -- it must sound silly.)

Generally I try to keep to whatever's most widely accepted among the rest of the English fanbase, but there are some where I have an oddball personal preference for pure aesthetics and thusly go with my own thing. Reah, for instance. I could go on for awhile about how much I loathe the name 'Lair'. Urrrgh. Falcom usually spells it 'Reah,' (not that we pay much mind to them after hilariously bad things like 'Fukt'...) and it simply looks better to me when you take her name into account together with Feena's. Reah and Feena flows better than Lair and Feena to me. After some of the names of folks in Origin, I've become tempted to make up my own. =P Spell it 'Mucha' (ugh!) but say it 'Myusha' huh? Both look awful spelled out, even if the name sounds cute when read off. How about Meucia?! 'Syon' (Sion? Shion? Argh.) gives me similar heartburn to read in English for the same reason.

I thought Mucha would be pronounced like the artist's name (mooka). Musha would have worked fine, Falcom. >_> (Mewsha!! XD) Syon would have looked better as Sion but then, everyone would probably pronounce it as Seye-on. ^^; Preferably, I would have liked to see it translated as Shion but dang them. Never will understand why the Japanese can't just HAVE a "si" sound and kana. ._.

Heehee. I hear you there.
Syon just looks bloody weird to me, really. Sion looks okay, but you never can tell how the heck they mean for his name to be said by a native English speaker. Blah.
Speaking of kana, it amuses me for some reason that Falcom now technically has two Hugos. The one little boy in Felghana, spelled ヒューゴ (hyuugo) and the charming (har har) lad in my avvie, Hugo Fact- spelled ユーゴ (yuugo). o.O? What gives with that, I wonder...?

Maybe his name isn't supposed to be pronounced by a native English speaker? After all, the game's only released in Japan and is only directed at real Ys fans.

Didn't they have 'Jugo' on one of the initial pictures of him released anyway? I prefer Hugo though. But let's stay away from the 'Fukt' thing. Brrrr. *shiver* I DO think 'Eunica' would make more sense, but I guess I've gotten used to Yunica already, so yay. Somehow I can't bring myself to like 'Toal' over 'Thor' regardless of canon.... but oh well. ^^; Here's a question out of curiosity to anyone: You go with Darm, or Dharm? I've personally preferred Dharm just.... because, I don't know, really. Darm looks kinda plain to me. (yes, I know it's only adding an h... ;p Bah.) ...and the more I reflect on it, the more I think I'm gonna go with 'Meucia' in my mind for 'Mucha' just to keep the gag reflex down from that awful spelling of her name.

Meucia, yay! ^_^ Now we petition Falcom (or the future translators..? ehehe..) to use that spelling! I just dislike Mucha because I look at it and get a Spanish-pronounciation impulse going so I wanna say "moo-cha" which is just horrible. ^^; I've mostly been going with 'Sion' in my head, but er... I really can't think of a good one for him. Syon is blargh-worthy though. *sigh*

(yes, I know it's only adding an h... ;p Bah.) I usually use Dahm since it is the most common spelling used by Falcom themselves, and because it sounds/looks better. I don't like Darm either, it's ... plain. When I think about it, it sounds awfully cheesy too. What's wrong with Sara h? To me, Sara looks kinda odd and isn't as most used spelling. Beside, Falcom has at least once spelled her name with "h", so it's not actually a made up name. Because Sara is the name that's been used in EVERY game translation (not sure about the DOS/AppleII one, but that one's screwy anyway - Arick) including every time Falcom's translated the game themselves (except possibly once or twice, they aren't good when it comes to consistency). Sarah is a different name that's pronounced differently. I use Sarah as much as I use Leah/Lair - that is, never. Oh, and "Sara" is definitely not a made-up name. It is extremely common in Europe (you know, where Esteria is located).

When has Reah/Lair not had a name in Engrish?

Maybe his name isn't supposed to be pronounced by a native English speaker? After all, the game's only released in Japan and is only directed at real Ys fans. True. I highly doubt they make this stuff up with ANY consideration as to how English-speaking and spelling audiences would say or spell a name. They go with what sounds good in their language and that's that. Hence we wind up with fun threads like this one in which we puzzle over the favorite names.

Sarah's not a made-up name either. In fact, I know quite a few Sarahs, but no Saras. (: I'm fine with either spelling, personally, as I pronounce both names exactly the same (how do you pronounce them differently?), and both are perfectly valid spellings of the name. Actually, I'm curious to know how Sara is pronounced differently from Sarah too. :O Does one emphasize the "rah" at the end of Sarah or something?

As for me (and by that same token, NightWolve), I mix and match. I do not use "Reah," as it looks downright moronic. For the sake of consistency, once we find one and settle on it, that's what will continue to be used from then on. But but but but but .... Lair is a creepy name. ._. ~~ Rhea then? :D

Why did you choose Lair over Leah? Lair is a creepy name. ._.

Rhea is a legitimate Greek name, I should point out. In greek Mythology, she was the wife of Kronus, and the mother of Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Hera, (I think) Demeter and Ares. Not so sure on the last two.
Not trying to change you mind, Deuce, I should say. Just pointing out Rhea's really not that weird at all.

What about Adol? It's a weird name too, why not go with Arick?

Well Lair is completely random just like Arick.

At any rate, one has to learn where and when to take liberties. I would not, for instance, ever use Falcom's official spellings of "Erudi-ru" ("Eldirl"), "Guruda" ("Glurda") or "Suto-ka-" ("Storker"). Speaking of, I AM curious as to what those last two are liable to be in the patches. Frankly though, as long as it's NOT Glurda or Storker, I'm cool. x_X Grgghhh, how ugly.
