I am thinking about getting a Turbo Duo. The Japanese ones seem the most common, but I was wondering:
Does Ys Book I&II have both Japanese and US voice acting on it? And if so, what determines the language played?

hi no it does not have both, the USa version of the game has american and the japanese is in japanese. you can play any disc on any system there is converter needed. but you will need one if you are buying Hucards and want to play a japanese hucard on a USA system.

Zeomare beat me to it! I was helping a friend get started on Oath in Felghana, and he has never played a Japanese game before. Oh well, you have to play the English version, it will be your single greatest gaming experience ever.

Ys I-II for Turbo Duo may be dubbed in English but it's got to be one of the best English dubs in the history of games.
As Zeo mentioned, the Duo is a region free system as far as CD-based games are concerned. If you picked up an American duo, it can play any JP CD game.

Except for Arcade CD's, which, you'd need the Kisado Converter & the Arcade Card Duo. But, for any of your Falcom needs, you don't need the Arcade Card, so, don't worry about that. Oh, & don't forget, we're(Frozen Utopia, which is me, Seldane, & some others) making NEW games for the Turbo/PC Engine

Get a Japanese Duo-R or RX. The "regular" Duo (both Japanese and American) has its problems. Oh, and you will need an Arcade Card Duo for your Falcom gaming needs! Both Popful Mail and Brandish takes advantage of it!

I was thinking about getting an RX, but I want to know if I can play English Hu-cards on it. I've heard that you can't. Also, what problems does the standard Duo have?

If my memory serves me well, the Duo R can read burned CD games if I'm not mistaken
Edit: Thats just the difference. As for problems with the original Duo, I don't have a clue.

Don't get a Duo. It'll easily overheat and certain sound problems are very common. Oh, and I hear the cd's of pretty poor quality as well. Some Duos can read burned discs, some can not. It's a matter of .... "luck." However, tampering with the cd unit can get any cd unit to run burned discs, you'll just have to do it right. DUO-R and DUO-RX are pretty much identical. The RX came with a 6 button controller. That's the only difference I can think of. You will not be able to play American Hu-cards on a Japanese system. You can, however, perform a rather complicated mod so that you can play American games on it. You can even perform a slightly more complicated mod and install a switch so you can play both. There are also converters. But these are rare. And expensive.

Considering I'm no good at modding systems, and I want my system to last a long time. How does getting an RX now and a converter from Turbo Zone Direct later sound?

That's how I did it. I bought a Turbo Duo on ebay, having sold my original one many years ago. Then I wanted to play Japanese hucard games, so I bought the converter from TZD. Which works perfectly by the way.

They only sell US->Jap converters. I'm not sure if they work the other way around, at least it doesn't say it does. Click! It's also ridiculously expensive. Wan. Hundred. Dallas.

Don't get an American version! Tell me one good hu-card game that's not available for the Japanese Duo!

I can't read Japanese. Speak a little, maybe, but I still get katakana and hiragana mixed up.

Then get a Japanese DUO-R/RX for Japanese Hu-cards and the CD-ROM games, and an American Turbo Grafx console (without the cd attachment) for American Hu-cards.

Hmmmmm. I don't know. It sounds pretty expensive. I think I'll get the RX now and work from there. Maybe one day, I can mod my system so I can play both. I'll need instructions, though.

There is absolutely no need to Mod a Duo (any version) for any reason. Plus I doubt that you can even MOD it. So if I were you, I'd take Seldane's advice.
