www.falcom.com/ys_20th/wp/wp.htmYs I and II on the wallpaper page there is only of the Eternal/Complete versions. But if memory serves me correctly, the stuff looked sort of like Ys III stuff. I think my fave style is Ys Eternal's. Oh woah. Ys IV is completely missing from the site. @_@;;; I guess we could use this? hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/Ys/ys3.htmOh gosh. Ys V on PS2 looks really cute. @.o!! Wish I could say the same about the art though. :P

Do you mean the look as a whole of the game (including in-game graphics, etc) or just the artwork designed for it (character portraits, promo pics, wallpapers, etc)?

Oops. Should have mentioned that I mean drawings, character designs, etc. and such -- artworks seen outside the game (or in it if it's the same style, I guess). :D Sort of like the Ys VI characters in the banner above (although, yeah, I know that image in the middle of Olha is an in-game pic).

Okay, that's what I thought then.
I'm going to have to say Ys IV The Dawn of Ys. Not a lot of art were made for it, but what's there is really nice.

I am partial to Ark of Napishtim, myself. Then again, it was the game that truly and completely got me back into the Ys Series.

Hard thing to decide.
I think in a different way I suppose. I think there are certain characters that look great in a certain version, but others look better in another one.
Overall, I really like Ys IV DoY, it has a very different artwork style from other Ys games. Sames goes for Ys ETERNAL, I suppose. Also I would second Ys VI for that. Very awesome.
Some portraits really rules in Ys Book I & II too. But not as much as the ones mentioned above, to me. Ys II Special is also very interesting. And I must point out, the Saturn Ys games have fantastic artwork too. ESPECIALLY LILIA. OMG, she's so gorgeous in that version!!!
Now, I'd also like to say the worst ones. Most american box arts weren't really good, especially Ys III Genesis, which SUCKS real hard. And finally... wtf was Falcom thinking with most character portraits in Ys II ETERNAL and Ys I.II COMPLETE?! Look at what they did with Adol and Lilia, they f***ing exterminated both. <.< Their hair, facial expression, etc. Adol's eyes became 100% blue, that's a sin when added with all the other defects. I also didn't like Felghana much... ay least Adol looks terrible. <.< Looks pale as if he didn't eat for weeks, etc. Ys ORIGIN has some interesting artwork, and some bad artwork. Fortunatelly Adol's artwork there is good.
EDIT: Portraits of Taito's Ys V for PS2 is something I absolutelly love, I forgot about them. No matter how bad the game is, one can not deny the portraits are very good. xD

Well, my favorite character, Pim. Looks like Freddy Krueger on the SMS. Less frightening and old on any other version. The winner? SMS Ys!

I think in a different way I suppose. I think there are certain characters that look great in a certain version, but others look better in another one. That's how I also feel, although the artstyle used in the X68000 version of Ys I is nothing but plain ugly. Oh yeah, that Ys I is cool. xD But the artwork isn't even exactly artwork! xD Funny though. XD That's not what I really meant, but interesting anyway too! Well, I meant more specifically Adol's artwork in the cutscenes, in the beginning of Ys I and of Ys II. (please, no offense taken to users who use this avatar xD) In this pic the eyes aren't THAT blue, but watching the actual video you can see how blue they are... And yeah, Lilia could have been worse. xD Does he? I didn't notice. xD Actually, he does have blue eyes in lots of places, like the Ys anime I think. The problem is that in COMPLETE his eyes are clearly blue like the sea. Add that to his facial expressions, etc... =.= I just don't like that Adol much. Ooh, Ys. I love it.

About time I threw my two cents in here, given the art is half the thing that drew me to Ys originally, way back when. Essentially, all the most recent Ys offerings have my favorite art styles. I love the detail and designs in Origin (three cheers for leather mittens!?), and I love the overall look of the characters as drawn in the Felghana art and the in-game portraits of Ys VI. Same applies to the Ys I & II Complete artwork. I love the older stuff too, of course. The above just happen to top the list. And I suppose it's worth mention that my favorite renditions of Adol himself appear in the Felghana art. The scarf makes a nice addition to his design.

I think my favorite would have to be Felghanas', but I like most of the official art from the Ys games. Though I do sometimes have problems with how certain characters look in the different styles, my example being Elena. Love Different but cute. (Can't prove this is Elena but it seems to be in all th fanart I see of her. Please correct me if it's not her) Like (probably because I sympathize with having shot puffy hair. Like Do not like in the least Anyway those are me thoughts, make of them what you will. Edit: I find I have more problems with the fanart then then with the official art.

Don't give in! Taito's PS2 version of Zwei!! is great, since it's basically a straight port... but their PS2 versions of Ys III, IV, and V are terrible, because Taito decided they'd try their hand at re-envisioning the games... and, well, they're no Falcom! -Tom Yes, that is indeed Elena, from Taito's awful PS2 version of Ys III. ... It has nice art, at least. I'll grant it that much. -Tom ... You want to start something with me, don't you... xD Anyway, Unsavory Maggot, didn't you play the PS2 Ys games? If not, then let me show my opinion about them: - Ancient Ys Vanished: Ys I·II ETERNAL STORY = Awesome, the only bad is language and load times. - Ys III: Wanderers from Ys = Awesome, it is my personal favorite Ys III version of all. I think you would like it too. - Ys IV: Mask of the Sun - a new theory - = Playable, but I don't consider it a good game at all. It has nice elements and other things. Beside the language, another problem is that you can get bored quite easily within the time. - Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand = Oh no, I really don't like this one. xDD It looks a lot like Ys IV PS2, but the gameplay got worse and you can get boring much more easily. I myself got bored right after I killed 4 enemies or so. xD You can jump and defend with the shield and all, but it doesn't have the interesting slash system from Ys IV PS2... well, if you play it you will see.

I already know your opinion about it, so do you about mine. We have talked about that hundreds of times. xD
Why don't we let him (Unsavory Maggot) try the game for himself? xD Liking it or not, let's just not discourage him... Heck, even if needed, he could just download the game to try it, and then buy it if he thinks it's worth it.
Only if we could rent japanese games... =/

As long as the jelly beasts from Ys II don't join in... aw hell! Eventually, I'll give them a try. Being the innie of the bunch, I've played loads of crappy games. I don't even need to mention the worst (most by "Ack-lame") but I've had fun even in the downright dirtiest games you could get your hands on. ...hell, I loved Friday the 13th. When I have the cash though (or rather, when my bank verifies that certain *ahem* "companies" have been very naughty with my bank account) I think I'll pick up NiGHTS first. At the very least, I'd take them just for the sake of having a complete(r) Ys collection. I totally blame Yahoo Japan for shelling out free copies of Ys I & II Complete, so far I only own... Xanadu Next, Legacy of the Wizard, Faxanadu, Oath In Felghana, Ark Of Napishtim, Ys Origin, Ys V (SFC) and NADS I think that's it. Oh, and the first two PSP Legend Of Heroes, and Popful Mail (SFC). One day, I hope to have the definitive collection of Falcom tities.

I don't even need to mention the worst (most by "Ack-lame") but I've had fun even in the downright dirtiest games you could get your hands on. By reading this sentence, I'm sure you would be able to enjoy even Ys IV PS2!! xD And maybe Ys V PS2, if you are real hardcore... And I have no doubts: you will like Ys III PS2. Actually, I'm 90% sure you will like it. Because we just never know... Also MP, you didn't enjoy it too?!? Oh... So far, this is the ALOY's opinion: Likes Ys III PS2: FM-77, Red Hairdo Dislikes Ys III PS2: Wyrdwad, MP83 Join the dark cool side, Maggot! xDD (But really, how can you guys not love it, I don't understand at all...) Also, Unsavory Maggot, here's a quite old thread about the best Ys III versions. I remember my opinion is fully explained in it. Click!
