I could swear there was an English translation for Xak one on MSX. It was featured on Woomb.net, which has mysteriously disappeared.
Anyone have any info on where to find the translation?

Wahoo! Someone is playing Xak games again. : ) Let me know what you think of the series Justin if you get into it. I really got into that series for awhile. Feel free to check out the XyZ page if you run into any issues and need some walkthroughs.

Wanted to play this for a while now, might as well go for it now that the rom gets thrown in my face! My previous experiences with MSX emulators have been kinda unstable though, what do you guys use to run this?

BlueMSX gets it running no problem. It is a little hard to use, but once you get it going, the game runs great.

Ah, that's the one I'm familiar with too. Crashed a lot on me back in the days when I tried to play SD Snatcher and first Castlevania, even savestates got bugged all the time.
But if it works for you it should work for me. Wingboots and daggers, here I come!

So yeah, tried it a bit. I used the gamedisk to boot the game, which turned out to be a mistake: it took me to a cutscene after some fiddling which I thought to be the opening, but it was in fact the ending! Well, I at least know I'll like the ending now.
The game has really nice art. The translation is super wooden, but it goes if you use your imagination a bit.
Choppy scrolling aside, the gameplay is pretty much Ys, which I didn't expect! Music is real good too, only things that suck are the load times and fiddling with disks. The saving/loading procedure is pretty painful to sit through, so I made a savestate and tried to load it... and the emu crashed. Damn you Bluemsx!
Anyways, I'm liking it enough to recommend it to whoever is reading this. If you liked YsI&II, this is right up your alley.
Oh, forgot to mention: the overall design of the town and even the first outside maps remind me a lot of Wander Wonder. Coincidence or reference?

The trick here, one that I am currently farting around with, is to use the MSX game for the story, while running through the TCD version of I-II. That version plays just like Ys I and II on the TCD, and the music is roarsome.

This game is awesome. Where you at Justin? I finished the first disk a while ago, that Elemental bossfight was intense! While the combat is similar to YsI, the blocking system shifts the focus to attacking enemies in the back or using the terrain to corner them, so it definitely has it's own flavor. The area I'm in now adds traps to the mix, so while you try to fend off enemies you also have to deal with disappearing bricks getting in your way and deadly spikes!
Not all is good though: ever since I started on the second disk the saving function has been playing up. Sometimes I try to save the game on the userdisk, but it hangs the program. It really sucks, I just lost 3000 exp and 2 floors of progress due to that. Does anyone know what causes this and how to stop it from happening?

I'm still sitting pretty close to the beginning. I have saved quite a few times though, and I haven't had any problems with the program hanging. What else are you running?

Nothing, really. I play it full screen without any filters to see the delicious little pixels even better, so there's nothing else on apart from the generic virus scanner and stuff.
I've only had this problem since I reached the second disk, never had any problems on the first one. Ah well, I'll just keep my fingers crossed whenever I save.

Wow. Lot of activity in this thread. Great to see so much interest in this series again. : ) Sounds like your having some troubles with getting the MSX version of Xak I to run correctly or at least save correctly using the userdisk and save states. When playing the four Xak games (including Fray in Magical Adventure) for MSX, I was using a modified Xbox with the BlueMSXBox emulator, which worked like a charm. I'm not sure how many of you have access to that, but I liked it a lot more than the PC version of BlueMSX. The trick would be to keep backups periodically during the course of your adventure and to make sure that you [bold]only[/bold] load your state from the disk you saved on previously, or you'll basically be loading your game snapshot into completely different set of data... which is what causes the errors you are having. Yes, it is a pain in the ass to continue swapping disks I suppose, but in a way, that's simply how it was done back in the day. Ys and several other older Falcom games for these older systems were done the same way. So yeah, I guess it does take some patience to go through it. But Justin is right, the TCD version of Xak I & II is by far the best version and also the most updated version of the first two games. A shame that it is not in English... Perhaps one day it will be... But who needs English translations when you have a complete "Story Synopsis" right here: miraigamer.net/xyz/xstory1.htmThat's pretty much everything you ever needed or "wanted" to know about the first Xak game. : ) Wander Wonder is fantastic. As a stand alone game, it does laps around several action adventure rpgs I've played over the years. Definitely one of the best games in the genre. This is one title that definitely needs translating and mass re-distribution. Content, and a walkthrough will come for that one of these days. I definitely will work on that as one of the Adventym projects one of these days when I can get around to getting content built for the site. The layout of the town is a bit similar, but I'm not sure that it relates to Xak. It could though, as Wander Wonder does reference several games in the genre, especially the original Zelda, without being a clone of anything. -Thomas

Hehe, nice. I guess it would be backwards. I guess V could be the Valkyrie series if I really wanted to go in that direction!
Anyhow, that's really what the purpose of the Adventym site is eventually going to be.
It's essentially what XyZ is now, but with better content management, layout and a lot more games/series added, as well as more info about other titles in the genre...
Xanadu and Faxanadu will be the next big projects undertaken after migrating the Xak content to the new site.
But there are plans for Ys, Wander Wonder, Brandish, Golvellius, Crystalis, and a few others.

The Xak section of your site is quite in depth, answered all questions I had about the series. I read the emulation part about the savestates too, but the thing is that I'm NOT using savestates at all! I've been swapping disks to save since the beginning, and for some reason the emulator hangs every now and then ever since reaching disk 2.
And the PCE version is that much better? Grinding aside, I'm enjoying the heck out of the MSX version already, so I have something awesome to look forward to then! I'll slowly make my way through the translated MSX games first, and save the PCE versions for a later time.
Oh yeah, the .kss music files for Xak I and II on your site are dead. Do you still have those files somewhere?

Ah, I see what you mean now. That sucks that your save file seems to be corrupting when saving and loading from the original user disk. Perhaps you should do a series of save states as well, just in case. : )
Regarding the Xak.kss files, I've fixed the broken links for now and they should all work. Also, in the same directory of where they are stored are several .kss files from Ys I-III that I had sitting around. Enjoy!

Awesome, thanks a bunch! I liked the music but the mp3 download on the site is probably from some other Xak version as it sounds a decent bit different from what comes out of Bluemsx. I'll try to convert the .kss to mp3 to give you another heap of data to pile on top of the content cue for the eventual Adventym launch.

Haven't had any saving problems since I upgraded my emulated machine to a Super MSXturbo something.
I ran into some crazy enemies and saw no choice but to level up. So after grinding 3 levels I go back, and this is the result:
Looks like it's back to town for better equipment... It's a great game with lots of fresh ideas, but the obligatory leveling is getting on my nerves.

Sadly, that seems to be the crux of old Ys and Xak games. Grind, grind, grind, grind~

You lie!
Everyone has to grind in that game. There is no possible way you can walk through any of those games and end up beating every boss without leveling slightly.
