Huh, now I have the urge to pick up the game. ...Of course, the whole naming scheme of the spells amuses me. ... Kafrizzle? c.c
...I almost expected foshizzle to be in the next set of spells.
Shizz, Shizzle, Foshizzle.
But... I will pick it up soon.

The renaming is horrible. Losing lots of the classic spell and enemy names was... painful.

The renaming may be different from what we're normally used to, but this translation is more closer to the spell names found in the original Japanese version. Like the in the Japanese games, most spell names are supposed to be onomatopoeias - words that are meant to imitate the sounds associated with an object or action. Spell names such as "frizzle", "crackle", and "zing" are just that. Sure it may take a while to get used to, but it's closer to what they were originally intended to be. Heck, "whoosh" sounds better than "infernos" IMO...considering that the name is supposed to describe a wind spell.

I have around 55 hours clocked in and I still don't see the end in sight O.o
Fun stuff.

I beat the game at around 63 hours. As of now I have 79 hours clocked in. I'm currently going back to past areas to see what I missed. I want to go and conquer the bonus dungeon right now, but my characters are just not ready.

Wow, the last time I spent that much time on a role playing game was Final Fantasy IX. The other ones I played I finished quicker than that. I will definitely pick this game up soon, if I can stop buying game music and arranged game music cds. But I can't stop, it's never ending!! I have a constant hunger for more! Edit: Forgot it took me just as long to finish ED6.

The game's pretty damned easy, actually.

Yeah, compared to past DQ games, DQVIII is a walk in the park.
Although comparing it to recent RPGs (and even some PS1 RPGs), this game can prove difficult. Especially for those who are used to playing Final Fantasy VII-X.
Overall, I'd say the game features medium difficulty.

My record for a game is 101:30 on Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne (the original Japanese version, WITHOUT the Maniacs bonus dungeons!)... Wow.... The most time I've spent on a game is 25 hours (Jet Force Gemini and Radiata Stories). I would never play a game more than that. He he, I can't stand either Jet Force Gemini OR Radiata Stories because I got sick of them both after around 25 hours of playing. Good ole shoot 'em ups. They never get boring.

I stated before in another thread it took me 90 hrs to finish Legend of Heroes VI, because I refused to use a walkthrough for it. Luckily Falcom was good about letting you know when you're going in the wrong direction in the game, or I might have never finished it. I will not use a walkthrough for the second chapter either.
By the way, did anyone play the FF XII demo that came with Dragon Quest VIII? Unfortunately I've heard bad things about it. I will play it though because I'm a long time FF fan.

I personally thought the FFXII demo was alright. I wasn't all that impressed by it.
FF fans were disappointed with it because it was "too different", which is ridiculous because the Final Fantasy series has always been about 'being different' or 'change'...and it's been that way since the first Final Fantasy game. Each FF game always strives to be different not only from each installment that came before it, but from other games in the genre as well.
That should be evident by the time looping storyline in FF1 to the drastic changes made to the game mechanics in FF2 (not the FF2 on SNES btw).
It's supposed to contrast it's rival series Dragon Quest. DQ will continue to remain the classic Japanese RPG, while the FF series finds new ways to reinvent itself.

I didn't like the FFXII demo for one specific reason.
I don't dig MMORPGs, and I don't want to play single player, offline RPGs with similarly slow and stupid combat systems.
Alas, FFXII is guilty of trying to be a MMORPG and failing. Which is really pretty g-ddamn odd, if you think about it.
Music ROOOOCKED however. I'm also happy to see the return of something vaguely resembling dungeons in a FF. FF hasn't had a good dungeon since... FFVI? Either way. Too long.

68 hours and climbing. Still have stuff to do, still haven't touched optional dungeon.
I haven't spent this much time on an RPG in years.

Is it a single player RPG or not? Is it similiar to a MMORPG? This sounds .... well, it certainly doesn't sound like fun. I think FFXII looks fun though.

Glad to hear the music is good in the FFXII demo. I bet Hitoshi Sakimoto was under huge pressure to create something new and fresh. I can only imagine what it would be like to pick up the pieces after Nobuo left. Hopefully he'll stay on. I heard that all the monsters are now visible on screen now. Something they wanted to do in FFX but didn't due to certain issues. Very interesting.

FFXII is more of an ARPG, really. However, unlike decent RPGs, you can't just hit X to swing your weapon. You choose to attack, choose an enemy, watch your guy attack, and then watch your character's action bar slowly fill up from 0, at which point he'll attack again by himself, etc. You can chime in with a new command, such as using an item, casting a spell, which he'll then do when his action bar is full again. It's vaguely similar (on paper) to the old ATB combat systems from the earlier FFs, except somehow much more boring. It's like you queue up attacks like in a MMORPG and then watch them play out. It reminded me too much of World of Warcraft, and that's not a good thing.
Battles happen right there, on the map. There is no screen smash, no different battle screen. It's just... not FF.

I've got no problems with ARPGs. I have no problems with evolving a franchise. But like Crystal Chronicles for the GCN, what we're getting isn't a Final Fantasy, or at the very least, shouldn't be called FFXII.

Who knows, maybe this will be the only FF game which I will truly like. Especially if it's an ARPG.They did it with Chrono Cross, as far as visible monsters go, and that game kicks major butt!

I like FF Crystal Chronicles. After FF3 (Famicom) and FF3 (SNES), that's my favorite Final Fantasy game.
