You can't make someone love something they don't feel the least bit interested in. If they combined the gameplay of VMP and the story of FFT, we'd have quite a monster on our hands. Ramza summoning Chocobos, Goblins, Bombs, etc.? Awesome idea!

Butbut... wyrdy! FFT is the best story ever! D: The PSP retranslation script in particular is mindblowingly good!

FFT had a story? @wyrd: Well, my point isn't that all TB games should be like strategy RPGs. But there's no reason for not trying to liven up a castrated battle system of FF1-FF9 and after that some people (not me) have compared to "gameplay complexity of flash games" - and I can see where they have a point. What I don't see is, why have JRPGs hanging between two extremes of overly simple and overly battle-focused and not make something in between that most people will like? Sure, and I love shooters where you don't shoot people and visual novels with no text ^___^ Genre confusion?

I'd take Final Fantasy 1 over Final Fantasy Tactics or Disgaea ANY day, myself. You and me. Outside. Right now.Ye just stole me words~! XD Its sad that wyrdwad gets bored with long strategy-ed battles. Because.... FFT is all kinds of ultimate amazingness ever. Was so even before the retranslation, and after that it's just..... <3 The story!!! And Disgaea has been INCREDIBLY fun so far too! (Though, the battles really are trickier than FFT. :'D Even after managing to get all me party onto level 15s or so. [Ah... I'm actually on topic while talking about Disgaea! XD ....I'm so slow in playing stuffs, by the way. ])

I'm just confused XD .Are Demon's Souls and Secret of Evermore classified as JRPGs or WRPGs? Honestly I'm sick and tired of all these labels :\

It's open in general, but not that open. I can accept some give-and-take if the game doesn't specifically fall into another genre. SoD on the other hand falls so squarely into the genre of "adventure", one of the oldest and most common gaming genres in existence. Look it up I'd say I've played enough Square games to realize that the combat system is inferior. Guess why the FF games started being more story-driven starting FF6-7? Because the combat failed to evolve with the time, and instead of significantly improving it Square chose to make minor modifications while drawing away the attention. It's not BAD just outdated. You know, nobody would buy a shooter with ballistics from Wolfenstein 3D. And while we're at it, here's a "what if" (even though Arc says "I don't like 'what ifs'" lol): how would you like a COMBAT-CENTERED game with the combat system from FF 1-9? You know, something like 80% battle and a completely banal uninventive plot like that of the FF Tactics games to keep it moving along? I'm almost positive that wouldn't sell that well.

I picked up the JP demo for God Eater last night. It sold damned well in its recent JP release and I hear a lot of comparisons of it and Monster Hunter- I figure that's because of the 4player parties fighting large boss monsters and not because it has a ridiculous learning curve/grind that chases away anyone who isn't Japanese
I didn't get to play it at all because right as the DL finished, I finally found the rare mission in Phantasy Star Zero that I was looking for for the past week. Maybe tonight...

MUHAHAHAHA BEG YOUR LORD FOR FORGIVENESS>!!!!!!!! ^__^ Ahem. Anyhow. My problem is exactly that I don't SEE what exactly is appealing in that system, as in, it's completely incomprehensible to me. But we can have it rest if you feel like it. Off-topic is off-topic, after all. Talking about so-called strategy-RPGs ( ), I recently bought a copy of the so-called "Wind Fantasy", which appears to be a long-running series of Chinese JRPG-style games nobody has ever heard of, lol. I got the 6th iteration because it was a bit cheaper than the latest one. The game is done fully in 3d, which means no sprites... The environments look somewhat blurry, the character models somewhat crappy... In short, the boxart looks heaps better than the game >___< The system looks really interesting, but I'm having a bit of trouble figuring it out even with a walkthrough, given that it's all in Chinese. There seem to be different monster types and different attacks corresponding to those; as you use the special attacks more you gain "skill" and may unlock new attacks. Thus far I can't quite figure out the logic except that characters have 2 weapons each, and it seems like the skills correspond to those. There's also magic/special skills of some sort, but I never bothered to figure those out beyond healing. Thus far, seem to be buffs/debuffs and like. Of course, there's items, like potions, antidotes and what-not, but I'm thus far puzzled to how/where you replenish your initial stock thereof. Oh, and you FF8 haters will love it - there's a junctioning system, of sorts! According to the manual, you can junction various elements to your stats, and elements have a circular relationship common to such games. Thus far, I only have wind and fire stones, and I can't figure out how to tell which monster uses which element >___< Storywise, seems to be an adventuring company of sorts thrown off their ship into an unchartered land with some mystical ancient ruins (uhh spare me), and the guy who attacks you in prologue (a gangsta-looking guy with a huuuge phallic gun) actually joins you to get out of the place. There's the main character who seems to be your average Joe (not much pre-story from previous games, sadly), a "silent girl" with a talking demonic sword and a "biri-biri" gal with a reeeally weird weapon that seems to be a combination of a pistol, a knife, and a giant metal ball or a chain (go figure). There's supposed to be another female character in a maid costume, but I haven't met her yet. In short, the game seems to have accumulated every single anime story cliche ever while remaining fairly original. Now I need some free time and superhuman determination to plow through the rest of the game. Oh and it has some of the strangest monsters ever. For example, a cross-breed of Poliwhirl and a kappa that hits you with a giant leaf, or evil-looking monkeys that manage to mystically petrify you with their bananas (go figure how they do it). At the same time, there's mecha in the game too. Maybe I should post some screenshots in that "weird monster" thread.

I'll throw in my two cents real quick. (sorry Wyrdy, the offer was tempting)
I don't like turn-based JRPGs anywhere near as much as I used to. I'm much more of a twitch gamer than most RPG fans tend to be; that comes through in my preference toward action games. However, I do still play JRPGs, even though only a handful ever intrigue me. I really want to play Persona 4, since I loved 2 to bits, for instance. I'm also extremely stoked for Golden Sun DS, and I'm going to try to play through The Lost Age while waiting.
It depends very heavily on the elements surrounding the battle system, and the system itself, whether I like a JRPG or not.
(on another note, I have a dream to make a game perfectly blending JRPG with stylish action. D:)

Yeah, I played through about half of the game. I think I still have a gif of the bunny laying around, actually. ohaithar By stylish action, I meant it by gameplay; sorry for the misconception. The concept I have going right now is a blend of Ys Seven, God Hand, and a truckload of my own ideas. It's going to be absolute hell to code, but holy shit will it be worth it! I don't know how well it'll be received, though. Smithee's going to hate me. :]

Turn-based? No, not really, though it does follow the majority of JRPG tropes, in the vein of the Tales games. Only actually fun. Hopefully. :/
... why are my posts so anemic? I must embrace eloquence! ;__;

Not only am I currently playing Star Ocean: The Last Hope International Edition, I think I actually...really like it ._.
Maybe I'm broken
I'm taking a break from that one for now though, since I'm back at home for the weekend and didn't bring my PS3 home with me. All I have is the laptop so I'll probably play a scenario or two of Sorcerian Original

Wow. God Eater is so Monster Hunter Lite (animu edition) it's almost not funny.
I'll admit that Monster Hunter is almost too hard, especially in the beginning when you're still trying to figure out what to do in the game, but I loved the certain bit of realism about its design. The characters looked like they were muscular, hunting mountainfolk and when they carry a weapon almost twice their size, they move like it. Getting hit by giant dragons (nearly) killing you is indicative to the size and power of these beasts you're trying to bring down. The weapon and armor design also shows off the components used to make the item very well, like you are using the actual bones and pelts of the monsters. God Eater has you running around as some scrawny, teenage JRPG hero/heroine that can swing around a magical transforming sword bigger than they are effortlessly because of some silly bracelet. Also you don't get new weapons, you just change around 3 parts on your BFS (big fuckin' sword). The apocalyptic urban design is interesting, though.. but so were the nature settings in Monster Hunter. My favorite was the first time I was at the beach and found that the tide had gone out, creating a land bridge to an island I hadn't seen before.
Also, I'm completely spoiled now by the character customization in the PSU-series. When I was creating my character in God Eater I was disappointed that I had under 20 hair styles to choose from, couldn't choose the exact color of my hair, couldn't choose the color of my eyes, nor the height and body build of my character.
ps- at the Sacred Ground in Cave Story. It's only hard because of the rest of the game is so easy that I've gotten used to playing sloppily. Also having to do the whole thing in one go is a pain as I'm trying to learn the boss encounters.

I don't think any semi-known company out there makes outright crappy games every single time. ^^ There's too much >:E going on about game mechanics and such lately. What happened to just loving the games we play? TOT Anyway, I've picked up KOTOR again and it's so damn hard to put down. Right now, I'm on Tatooine (-- the first planet I chose to go to after Dantooine and just about finished it). I had Mission and Canderous for the first part of it but once I got HK-47, I switch Canderous out. HK-47 is an absolute riot. Love his background stories (I went through 3 of them. Dunno if there are any more. I hope so!) I think I'll be keeping the droid in the party for a while. ^__________^ Wheeeee~~ Meatbags~~~

KOTOR seems like it'd be lots of fun if I actually gave a damn about the universe. But I happen to hate STAR WARS >__< Still, a well-made game, although with a bit clunky controls. I couldn't ever get the camera to scroll out for top-down view.

My character tends to get stuck in the spot he's in now and then and it's hard to effectively move around in battle. =__=;

That's kind of why I'm finally dying to get started on the Star Ocean stuff. I want to see whether they really are as horrendous as ye guys say they are!
