I got YsVI about a week after the release. It's a wonderful game, and it is highly playable (presuming you use XP). I played through it in five days, and I could NOT stop playing. I had no trouble playing it even though I had no idea what they said. And every character are using different expressions on their faces, so you can pretty much understand what they mean.
The only thing that I did not like with this game was that it was a bit too short.... But it's still Ys.
I recommend this game to you. You should definately play it!
EDIT: If you will buy it, do that from shop.himeya.com which is located in the US.

I can read Japanese a little (albeit at a fairly slow speed)... o.o My spoken Japanese is better though, since my knowledge of Kanji isn't so great >.> I'm learning, but my memory is terrible.

I read Japanese. The Falcom website is full of pictures and English URIs. It shouldn't be terribly difficult to navigate.
Ys VI is pretty straight-forward. You shouldn't have much difficulty playing the game without understanding the language. Eiyu~ Densetsu VI is rather story intensive, however.

I can read japanese but kanji always trips me up. Right now I'm struggling through Eiyuu Densetsu 3 on PSP. I get only so far with the battery dying out but I want to understand the story. If you're familiar with looking up kanji, Jquick trans is a pretty cool tool. It's helped out alot.

Try like self teaching youself. Once you can regconize the hiragana and katagana, you can use the dictionary to search for its meanings =)

Wanna learn Japanese? Go to YesJapan.com !!! I've learned basics and ALL of Hiragana (Course I) in merely 2 months!!! Now I'm reviewing Course I because I wanna take the Certification Exam. It's cheap!!! You just pay a monthly fee of about 25 bucks (actually it depends on the plan you're gonna choose) !!! There are also live classes (known as YesJapan Live) Downloadable shows (entertaining and recomended!!) MP3s (mostly independent Japanese bands) And much much more!!! Sore wa www.yesjapan.com desu Asoko ni Haven9270 to moushimasu (I'm not sure if that one's right but experimenting with grammar is cool) Sore ja!!!

Like a lot of others here (or so it seems ^^; ) I'm still learning Japanese. I've been offhandedly teaching myself vocabulary and little snippets here and there over the last several years, and only just got the chance at long last to take a class on it-- so now I'm learning hiragana, kanji, and so on and so forth.
@_@ Matter of fact... my midterm is in two weeks. KYAA!! (Bah, I ain't worried. ^_~)
I'm no where NEAR skilled or fluent yet, but I can at least read hiragana decently well now, and have a fairly good vocabulary base with some basic grammar knowledge. Not too shabby for half a semester's worth of work, I guess. ^^;
..^^; hehe, amusingly, I've been using screenshots of dialogue and such from Ys: OIF to help sink the hiragana properly into my brain...
